~ La Casa de Panchita ~

2003 was a very successful year for La Casa de Panchita and also for the situation of domestic workers in Peru. In July of 2003, Law Nº 27986 was ratified granting domestic workers a maximum eight-hour workday, days off on all federal holidays and a bi-yearly bonus.

Highlights of our work this past year include:

- Contacting 1,622 domestic workers in the streets of Lima, Peru to inform them of their rights.

- Visits by 669 different domestic workers to the Casa de Panchita to enjoy the services we offer—assistance in labor disputes, academic tutoring, computing classes, and recreational outings, among others. 36% of these women who used our services were under 18.

- Provision of information and assistance in 383 cases of work-related, health and emotional problems.

- Collaboration with 21 night schools where domestic workers study. There, we delivered 135 presentations on the topics of rights, family planning, prevention of STDs and others.

- 53 appearances in the media—television, radio and newspapers.

- Trips to the rural communities in the provinces of Cutervo, Chota and Jaén to lead workshops aimed at preventing girls younger than 15 from migrating to cities to find jobs in domestic work.

- Rescuing several girls from jobs where they were being exploited.

~ Bike for Life: Ride 50 Miles to Reach Around the World  ~

“Ride for a Day, Take Care of a Child for a Year”

On May 22, 2004, the “Bike for Life: Ride 50 Miles to Reach Around the World” was held in Sacramento, California. The ride took take place along the paved bike path of the scenic American River Parkway.

[pic]

An anonymous donor had contributed up to $40,000 in matching funds for the ride. Key to getting the commitment of the matching funds was finding the right organization. Cindy Palay Lyon’s inspiration for the ride came from a National Public Radio story about children in Africa who are losing their parents to AIDS. She felt profoundly moved by their story and wanted to help make a difference. In searching for an appropriate Charity, Palay Lyon had a few key requirements: fiscal transparency, low administration cots and a local approach.

The SEE/World Medical Fund (), a grass roots nonprofit organization that works in Malawi, Africa, met her criteria. SEE/World Medical Fund is sensitive to local culture and customs and takes a hands-on, community based approach of placing orphans with local villages. Once places, WMF continues support in the form of food, farming supplies, clothes, medical care and school fees.

The HIV/AIDS pandemic has created over 400,000 orphans in Malawi, according to UNICEF, representing over 60% of the total number of orphans. The orphan sponsorship programme supports these vulnerable children and makes sure they have access to medical treatment and an education. The mobile clinics provide free medical treatment to around 14,000 children in remote villages, where over 90% of Malawi’s population resides, who do not readily have access to basic health care.

The event was a great success – congratulations to Cindy Palay Lyon and all people who worked so hard on this event!

Each year, REI offers and Environmental Awards grant to support non-profit organizations on their mission by implementing new programs or projects that directly effect the environment or introduce people to the benefits of the natural world. Wild Women Workshops applied for this grant to offer a 5-day introductory back backing course in Yosemite for women of color.

Thanks to long-time stewardship of The Light Footed Clapper Rail Study Team, led by Dick Zembal, there has been a marked increase in their population. This is primarily due to providing artificial Nesting Platforms that float in the marsh.

Tim Anderson designed and built the latest model - a combination of high-tech forum-cored hull (derived from modern boat building techniques) coupled with an upper structure built of woven rattan and yucca fibers. Within two days it was occupied by Light-footed Clapper Rails seeking refuge from predators on the high tide. Tim is seeking a grant to fund the construction and deployment of fifty more platforms.

The Friends of the Refuge and the Refuge Manager, John Bradley are conducting tours of the refuge for the public and special interest groups. The last Saturday of each month has been set aside for a public tour beginning at 9:00 a.m. The tour will include the Native Garden, Nature Center displays and video and a walk to the observation deck to view the salt marsh and wildlife.

Americans for Safe Access, (ASA) is the largest national grassroots coalition working to protect the rights of patients and doctors to legally use marijuana for medical purposes. Our successful media and legal campaigns have resulted in important court precedents, new sentencing standards, and more compassionate community guidelines.

SUMMER PATIENTS' TOUR

ASA medical marijuana patients will be rolling into towns all over the country this summer to educate the American public about the federal War on Patients. Press events, public speaking engagements, activist trainings, and voter registration drives will animate people concerned about the attacks on medical marijuana patients to Get Out The Vote!

PATIENTS' UNIONS

ASA is helping organize patients with specific medical conditions to advocate for themselves. Our coordinator is working with the patients' unions to effectively organize and we are training media spokespeople on how to communicate the issues clearly and sympathetically.

LEGAL CAMPAIGN

This year ASA is taking on legal issues directly. We've added a staff attorney, who has created a manual on how to defend medical marijuana patients and is touring California this summer holding trainings for public defenders. We are developing a national database of cases and attorneys and are initiating statewide lawsuits for the return of property wrongfully seized from patients in California. In Los Angeles, ASA is helping a sickle-cell patient pursue damages for harassment she's suffered at the hands of police. Our peer counselors are visiting dispensaries talking to patients about staying legal.

VICTORY AT BALLONA!!! Over 600 Acres Saved

On September 30, 2003 state officials approved acquisition of over 600 acres at the Ballona Wetlands. Ballona Valley Preservation League was one of many groups that supported the proposal and worked actively to see it through. The deal represents over 50% of the 1,087 acres owned at Ballona by developers. It is a huge win for the wildlife and habitat at the largest remaining coastal wetland in Los Angeles County.

The acquisition of the 623 acres culminates 8 years of hard work since the beginning of Ballona Valley Preservation League in 1995. It is a testament to the perseverance of many groups who worked toward this victory. (For more information contact BVPL Director Bruce Robertson at thetao@ or (310) 398-5511.)

FANTASTIC NEWS

SAVE OUR RING OF GREEN

MT. CLEF RIDGE

As of 5/25/04 City Council Meeting, an ad hoc committee to negotiate with Michael Dubin, SD Development...a willing seller...for the purchase of the Mt. Clef Parcels has been formed.  Ed Masry and Dennis Gillette Council Members are on the committee and are appointing several citizens to the committee as well.

Also at that Council meeting heavy opposition was represented against using the open space funds and noise mitigation funds for building a gymnasium at Sycamore Canyon School in Dos Vientos.  These funds were being proposed because funds were needed quickly to apply for a matching funds program with the State of CA and the Dos Vientos developers did not set aside enough money to provide adequate facilities for this school.

Our petition to the Council to aggressively negotiate the purchase of the Mt. Clef parcels and convert it to open space for perpetuity...saving the wildlife corridor and Wildwood Park in particular...was presented as on going to the Council.  A copy of its current 1,135 signatures was presented to the Council as what the people want. Again these parcels are currently ranked the #1 priority of category 1 for open space purchases by the City.  The area where the Mt. Clef parcels are located are ranked by the State of CA as 10 out of 10 in priority to preserve, 4 out of 5 for opportunity to save and 5 out of 5 as severe threat to wildlife movement as documented in the Missing Linkages report...it is a choke point.

Thank you for all your strong support. We will notify you when a hearing takes place or any key significant Council meeting takes place regarding the purchase of the parcels...stand by this summer!

Action: Over 80 North American book publishers have committed to phase out of using papers that may contain fiber from ancient forests and to maximizing their use of recycled paper within a 3-5 year time period. These leading publishers were spurred to action by the Green Press Initiative in the U.S. and the Markets Initiative in Canada; non-profit programs working to catalyze environmental responsibility within the book-publishing sector.

GPI publishers have begun using the GPI logo and eco savings statements in their books and press releases. The GPI logo is the equivalent of the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. GPI’s consumer research shows that readers will support innovative publishers and are willing to pay up to $1.00 more per book for books printed on environmentally friendly paper.

Ms. Liu estimates that her command of English has improved 30% - 50% as a result of her participation in the C.E.O. Women program.

Several C.E.O. Women graduates also spoke a few words about their experiences: "Thank you for believing in our dreams." "This has been an inspiration. We enjoyed the journey we took." "I have dreams and many ideas - what else can I say, but thank you!" "Thank you to Farhana. She did great for us. She has connected with us like a family."

~ Sustainable Solutions Caravan ~

Hello to all of you amazingly wonderful people out there who I may or may not know personally!  I am writing to invite you to join the fractal forum, which, hopefully, will be a way of efficiently connecting all of the amazing projects that we are doing towards the betterment of humanity and our planet.

We have projects including permaculture, biodiesel, straight vegetable oil and water powered vehicles, volunteer projects of all kinds, urban centers, eco-tourism and reality tours in Latin America, musicians, monkey projects, and so much more.  What we need is to reach as many people as possible so those who want to be involved can find out exactly where they fit in.

Right now we need people for the next run of the Sustainable Solutions Caravan which will follow the campaign trail with information about sustainable living and renewable energies, among other things. We also need people to help organize this.

Right now in Ecuador there are reserves and projects that need help, ideas and volunteers, in order to help preserve some of the most biodiverse forests on the planet.

Right now we need people to help develop the Urban Oasis in Costa Rica.

Thanks so much for continuing the work.   We will create the change we want to see.

So- Go to what interests you, and send your friends to what interests them!
