Anatomy and Physiology - Smoky Hill

Anatomy and Physiology

2006-2007

Instructor: Coover

Welcome to Anatomy and Physiology !!! We have a fun and busy year ahead of us. To make this a fun, safe, and productive classroom for all students, I have listed a few expectations I have for each student. Please follow these as close as possible to make this a great year!

Classroom Expectations:

1. Be ready: In assigned seat, pencil sharpened, materials ready to go when the bell rings. I will not sign anyone out to the restroom or drinking fountain for the 1st 30 minutes of class.

2. Be respectful: Respect everyone’s right to keep their property and person safe, have different viewpoints, and to participate in class discussions without interruption.

3. Be recognized: Raise hand to comment during group discussion.

4. No food or drink: No food or drink in the ITV room.

5. Other Rules: The studio/ITV rooms have a special set of rules. Review your ITV contract for details.

Lab Safety: Safe technique and procedures are to be practiced in the lab at all times. All students must know where all safety equipment is located and how to use it properly. Labs must be read thoroughly before beginning each lab. Failure to comply with safety rules and proper technique will result in a students exclusion from lab activities.

Hall Passes: Students must have their planners signed by me to leave the room. For distance sites, please check with me before you leave the room. I will e-mail your facilitator at the end of the day to record absences, tardies and passes that might need to be recorded in your planners.

Grading: 9 weeks grades will be figured using the following percentages:

|Quizzes |15% |

|Daily Assignments |20% |

|Dissection |20% |

|Current Events |10% |

|Participation |5% |

| Exams |30% |

The following scale will be used:

* A 90-100%

* B 80-89%

* C 70-79%

* D 60-69%

* F 59 and below

*

Late Homework: will be accepted after the due date for 2 credit. Late work will only be

accepted for the current unit. Homework is due at the beginning of the class period.

Grades On-Line: Grades on-line are available again this year. If you have questions about how to use grades on-line please contact the school office or myself and we will walk you through the process. Grades are “run” for OPS school-wide each week by 10:00 a.m. on Fridays. I can only guarantee that those assignments turned in by 3:35 on Thursday will be entered in time for the deadline. For distance sites, I will mail you information on Grades On-Line so you can get signed up.

Current Event Forum: Each student is required to post one current event summary to the Blackboard discussion board each week. Write up your summary in Word, save and then post. To receive any credit, the current event must be posted by 10:00 Friday. During class on Friday, you will then visit at least 3 other class members summaries (at least 1 from another site) and comment (reflectively) on it (please don’t just include empty praise like “this was great” or “nice work”, but ask questions and promote dialogue with the person on their

topic). You will receive 20 points for your summary and 30 points for your comments to the

other class members for a total of 50 points each week on current events. The current events

must be related to the topic of Anatomy and Physiology. The format for your current event is attached.

Dissection: Dissection is a large part of the class and is therefore required by each student. The following specimens will be dissected: cow heart, cow eye, sheep brain, sheep kidney and cat. Many of us have house cats as pets, so the first few dissections may be difficult. Students will work in pairs during dissection. Each student will be given a grade for their dissection as well take a dissection quiz upon completion of each dissection.

Class Web Page: I have created a web page for student/parent use. The page includes the class syllabus, course objectives, helpful links and daily assignments. If a student is absent from school, they are to pull up the assignments they missed off of the Internet. The address is:

Some of the documents will be saved in the “PDF format”. A PDF reader can be downloaded from the Internet for free. This format allows you to print the document off on your home computer to look just like the original document. I also write articles on a regular basis about our A&P classroom for the district website, so take a peek at it from time to time to see what is going on in the classroom.

Participation: Every Friday, the students will receive a grade on their classroom participation for the week. The grade will be determined on behavior and engagement during classroom activities.

Semester Grade: The semester grade will be a combination of the 9 weeks grades, historical contribution and semester final.

Students: This page is to be turned in to me by September the 1st. (Don’t forget to detach it from the rest of your syllabus.)(
