4th Grade RESOURCE ROOM Grading Policy for:

Language Arts, Reading, and Spelling

Mrs. Johnson’s Class

Similar to the 4th grade general education class, you will receive three separate grades from our class. This sheet will help you know what we will be doing in each part of the class and where your grade will come from. However, due to the nature and uniqueness of the resource room setting, adjustments to this grading policy may occur if the need arises.

|Language Arts |

|Writing Tasks |30% |Writing tasks are usually started and finished in the classroom. |

| | |Project Read (PR) is a comprehensive language arts program designed to provide explicit instruction |

|Project Read Activities/Class Work/DOL |25% |in encoding/decoding of words, reading comprehension, and written expression. Most (PR) work is |

| | |completed in the classroom with occasional homework assignments. |

| | |DOL (Daily Oral Language) is a strategy for building student success in learning grammar, |

| | |punctuation, and spelling skills. Students correct and discuss sentences which need grammatical |

| | |editing. |

|Tests/Projects |35% |Any assessment pieces in writing or in Project Read material. |

|Class Participation |10% |This class is “hands on” the majority of the time. Students are expected to be active participants at|

| | |all times. |

|Reading |

|Homework | |Every Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening, students are responsible for reading 20 minutes at home |

|*Weekly independent reading logs and |20% |and summarizing what they read in their reading logs. The reading logs are due the next day of class.|

|UNRAAVEL sheets* | |(Each 4th grader must always be reading a book. Be sure to choose an AR book so you can count this as|

| | |your required AR quiz and use for your oral bi-monthly book reports). |

| | |UNRAAVEL comprehension sheets are handed out on Monday and due every FRIDAY (or earlier if the |

| | |student completes it earlier). |

|Book Reports |20% |Bi-monthly book reports are assigned and oral presentations of the book report is required. When a |

| | |report is assigned, a paper will be sent home explaining the report requirements. *All papers sent |

| | |home by teacher are also accessible on the teacher eboard website under Lindsay Johnson.* |

|Class Work |20% |Class work from guided reading books |

| | |Class work on vocabulary from reading books or CQ magazine |

| | |Class work on grammar lessons |

|Tests |30% |Vocabulary and comprehension tests |

| | |AR tests |

| | |Additionally, each marking period, you will be responsible for reading a minimum of one book |

| | |independently and taking the AR quiz on it to count toward your quiz grade. |

|Participation |10% |This class is “hands on” the majority of the time. Students are expected to be active participants at|

|Spelling |

|Tests |50% |Spelling tests are on Fridays. |

|Homework |40% |Spelling Journals and the weekly spelling list come home on Mondays. TWO activities from the Creative|

| | |Choice Spelling Sheet must be completed in your journal and turned in on Thursdays to receive full |

| | |credit. |

|Participation |10% |Spelling words are reviewed in class through a variety of activities. Students are expected to be |

| | |active participants at all times. |
