Accelerated Reader (AR) Guide

Accelerated Reader (AR) Guide

1. AR time is every day for the first 20 minutes of class, so please bring your AR book and bookmark every day.

2. AR counts for 20% of each quarter’s grade.

3. AR time is for reading only; it is not time to organize yourself, to work on other work, or to study for a test for another class.

4. AR time is silent. This means: no gesturing, mouthing words, or trying to get another person’s attention (even if it is silently trying to do this), and no showing another person at your table what your book says.

These will all get you asked the RTC questions and if it continues, you will be asked to go to RTC.

5. You need to earn at least 20 points by the end of the quarter. Books are worth different amounts of points, depending on how challenging the book is to read. For example: Captain Underpants books are worth 1 pt each while Bud, Not Buddy is worth 8 points.

• You earn points by reading the book and then taking the quiz over the book on the computer.

• Depending on how well you do, you will earn a certain amount of points for the book. For example, if you get take a test on a Captain Underpants book that is worth 1 point and score an 80% on the test. You will earn 0.8 points. You only earn the full amount of points if you get a 100% on the test.

6. I will never pick your AR book for you; you are in charge of selecting your own book. The book you choose should be within your reading range. If it is not, I will ask you to select another book of your choice within your actual reading range. You will find you your reading range after we take the STAR reading test.

7. All AR tests must be taken in my room. Any tests not taken in my room will not count toward your point goal and you won’t be able to retake the test.

8. To be able to take a quiz on your book, you must have both the book and your bookmark. If you do not have both, you will not be allowed to take the test that day and will have to wait until the next day to take the quiz. When you are done taking the test, you have to record the book and the number of points you earned on your bookmark.

9. If you pass your AR test with a 60% or higher, then you can go get a new book during my class. However, if you fail the quiz (50% or lower), you will have to go to the library at your own convenience (before/after school or during lunch). When going to the library in my class, you have 10 minutes to be back in my room otherwise you will lose your privilege to go to the library during my class for the rest of the quarter.

10. You can’t retake a test you fail or retake a quiz on a book that you have already taken at your elementary school. These quizzes will be blocked from your account. So make sure you are selecting books you have never read before.

11. If you forget your book, please grab a worksheet off of the back counter. You will need to read the story, answer the questions and then write a paragraph summary of the given story. This is due at the end of the AR time. If you don’t finish this at the end of AR time, it becomes homework due the next day. If you repeatedly don’t bring your AR book, you will be asked to call home to your parent.

12. If you lose your bookmark, I will replace it once during the quarter. If you lose it again, you will not receive another one and you will not be allowed to go to the library during class for the rest of the quarter. You will have to go to the library before/after school or during lunch.

Honors only: You will be asked to read 1 classic novel off the classics’ list each quarter. If you do not fulfill this requirement, you cannot earn an A in AR reading each quarter.

Read180 only: You must earn at least 4 AR points before I will accept any Read180 points towards your AR grade. Also, each Read180 point you earn is worth ½ of an AR point. So, if you were to earn 14 points by the end of the quarter in Read 180, I would give you 7 points towards your AR goal in my classroom.
