Dear Parents and Families;

Welcome back! Each August as we work on preparations, we know the first days of school are right around the corner! That means soon the halls and classrooms will soon be filled with the sound that energizes us... Kid sounds! A school just isn't a school until the halls are filled with kids and you can feel the buzz of learning in the classrooms. We can't tell you the excitement we feel each year, anticipating the day that kids and families start through the front door!

We are so excited to start this school year. Our school offers incredible opportunities for children to learn and grow. It continues to be our mission to ensure that the Riverview community supports each child, as they become respectful, responsible and high achieving individuals. It is evident that this mission has ensured that Riverview Elementary School is the best place for students to learn and grow! Anyone entering our school can experience the warm and inviting atmosphere that has been built. Pride and a positive school spirit are evident! Our staff members are focused on "Student-Centered--?Kids First!" learning environments, where all students' needs are met in supportive, collaborative and caring environments. We are so fortunate to have such a professional staff and such an involved and caring community!

This year brings many new students, families and staff to Riverview. We are excited about our "First Three Days" start to our school year. There is information in the newsletter about the First Three Days!

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!

Mark your calendars and plan to join the Riverview Elementary staff for the Welcome to the Family event on Thursday, August 29th from 1:00 to 2:00. The event will start promptly at 1:00 and conclude at 2:00, when staff are

required to attend a final meeting prior to the start of school.

During Welcome to the Family hour you will also have the opportunity to drop off medication with our nurse, update information in the office, put money on lunch accounts and meet our staff. It's probably best to wait to bring

the school supplies until Monday, September 10, when students will be in their assigned classrooms.

We hope this alleviates some of the first day jitters and gives children and their families a positive start to the year!

The First Three Days!

Staff at Riverview have been hard at work planning the "First Three Days" and look forward to kicking off our year! When students arrive at our "Meet the Family" event next Thursday afternoon or when they arrive on the first day of school, they will find out their family team placement by going to their grade level table. Riverview Leadership Students will escort students to their classroom locations.

The beginning of the school year plays a key part in nurturing and building an effective school culture. We believe that no school improvement effort will be effective, maintained, or enhanced unless school culture and a focus on academics are both addressed and aligned. By focusing on the relationships and connections that make up our culture, we set the stage for student learning and high levels of achievement.

Students will be assigned to family groups for the first three days of the school year and two adults will be leading each group in order to provide a more welcoming and supportive start to the school year.

Our "First Three Days" schedule will build our common language and integrate students to the Riverview culture. Teachers have worked hard to build powerful lessons that all students will experience. Students will be actively engaged in lessons throughout the day which will involve stories, reading, writing and other learning. We want students finishing the week feeling comfortable and confident as learners and citizens. We want students to develop positive peer relationships. We want students to feel that the adults in the school know them, support them and care about them. Specific themes for lessons include:

? "We are Welcoming!" All staff members at Riverview consider it their job to make every student, parent, and visitor feel no-

ticed, welcomed, and valued.

? "Harmful or Helpful?" Relationships are the foundation for learning. Riverview's school rules and behavior expectations are

tools for teaching

?

students to become the moral and ethical citizens we expect them to be. The rules and expectations are anchored in re-

spect, responsibility

?

and safety.

? "Words Have Power!" We believe that the language students hear helps them see their own possibility and potential and leads

them to perform in ways that are consistent with that language.

? "Never too Late to Learn!"

? "Best School in the Universe!

The week will conclude on Friday with students being escorted to their grade level classroom placements. We will gather together in our first assembly that morning, celebrating our week and reinforcing the teachings for the week. We will cap off the first week with a family BBQ & picnic.

Kindergarten Information!

As part of the family connection piece of WaKids, school for kindergarten students will begin Monday, September 9. The three days prior (September 4, 5, and 6, will be spent conducting individual family conferences with the child's teacher to welcome families and students to school and talk about each child's strengths and needs. Parents know their child best and our teachers look forward to meeting with students and parents and addressing any questions or concerns about the transition. Initial student assessments will also take place in these conferences.

? Kindergarten students will attend every day from 8:35-3:15 and dismiss at 1:15 on Fridays to support staff learning and collaboration.

* Transportation will be provided using the same guidelines as students in grades 1-6.

* Kindergarten students will eat lunch at school. You may send a cold lunch or they may pay for a hot lunch. You may also complete a free/reduced lunch application to see if your child qualifies for this program. If you have any questions regarding this process, don't hesitate to contact our school office.

* Kindergarten students will be allowed to eat breakfast at school if you so choose. You may pay for breakfast or if you qualify for free/reduced lunch, your child may participate. Breakfast starts at 8:20. Students may not arrive at school earlier than this time.

* As a full-time kindergarten student in Snohomish, your child will participate in the state developed WaKids program. WaKids is a transition process between early learning and kindergarten. It has three components: family connection, whole-child assessment, and early learning collaboration.

We are excited to begin this new journey with you and your child! Please feel free to call us at 360-563-4375 if you have any questions.

RIVERVIEW FAMILY PICNIC Please join us at lunchtime on Friday, Sept 6 for a fun picnic lunch. If you wish to purchase a lunch, please see next page

Parents may also notify us of a child's absence through Skyward/Family Access

IMPORTANT SCHOOL DISMISSAL INFORMATION

As we start the new school year, we would like to remind you of some of our procedures regarding dismissal of our students.

? If your child rides a bus to school, please have them ride to school the first day. This helps the drivers and the school to make sure they get on the correct bus home. If your child will be going to a daycare or Boys & Girls Club after school, please send a note to assure we have that information! Include daycare name, phone number, address.

? Our policy is to always put children on their bus home unless we have instructions from the parent, either in writing or over the phone. If you or someone else will be picking up your child every day, please send a note to our office. Also, we must receive a note or phone call BEFORE 2:30 pm from you if you want your child to alter their daily routine, such as a pick up instead of riding the bus, riding a different bus, or getting off at a different stop than usual. We cannot take your child's word for it--we MUST receive that information from an adult.

? We also encourage you to use the school buses whenever possible to help prevent congestion in the pick up area.

? However, for those of you who are picking up your child, you may either park your car and come inside to the office or you may drive through our pick up lane. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE PICK UP LANE. Students will not be allowed to cross into the parking lot without an adult. If you drive through, please remember to move as far forward in the line as possible and BE COURTEOUS! This will keep the line moving and help us to take care of all of our families as quickly as possible.

VOLUNTEERS

Snohomish is known for coming together to support education and our students, and our strength comes from the people who work and volunteer in our schools and across our district. Volunteers have many opportunities to work with children and schools by assisting on the playground, in the classroom or library, as well as tutoring, chaperoning field trips, serving on committees or assisting with school projects and newsletters. An hour of time can make a valuable difference.

We have a very active and engaged PTO. A great way to volunteer is to use the PTO Sign-Up Genius. Go to the PTO website: to learn more about this valued group and find volunteer opportunities.

SAFE VISITOR SOLUTIONS We are excited to share that we are implementing the SafeVisitor Solutions check-in/check-out and volunteer registration system across our district. Riverview started using this system in the Spring 2019, and this system should be fully implemented district-wide by the start of the 20192020 school year. The new system allows us to screen volunteers and visitors and provides us with a visitor-log. When entering our buildings, all adult visitors will be required to provide a Washington state driver's license or other photo ID. In the event of an emergency/evacuation, it is important to have an accurate visitor log. Approved volunteers and visitors are welcome in our schools. Our goal is to keep everybody safe while maintaining a welcoming environment.

COMMUNITY FLIERS All district-approved community fliers are located on our school website under the Community tab at the top of the page. There you will find a section called the District Approved Community Fliers page. Fliers are reviewed and posted weekly by the school district (typically on Tuesdays). Feel free to email fliers@sno.wednet.edu with any ques-

tions or concerns.

MMR vaccine exemption law change 2019

In 2019, the Washington State Legislature passed a bill that removes the personal and philosophical option to exempt children from the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine required for school and child care entry.

The bill takes effect July 28, 2019 and applies to public and private schools and child cares. The law removes the option for a personal/philosophical exemption to the MMR vaccine requirement for schools and child cares. It also requires employees and volunteers at child care centers to provide immunization records indicating they have re-

ceived the MMR vaccine or proof of immunity. Click here for more detailed information available from the Washington State Department of Health. Click here for a list of frequently asked questions (and answers) available from the Washington State Department

of Health.

Attention 6th Grade parents...NO SHOTS, NO SCHOOL

This is a reminder that your child is required to have a Tdap vaccine before entering 6th grade IF the student is 11 years old and IF it has been at least 5 years since the last DTaP, DT or Td shot. Please send in documentation (see Tdap section below) of the immunization or FAX (360-563-4378) it to us at your earliest convenience. Other vaccines required, but are not new, are 3 doses of Hepatitis B, 3-4 doses of polio and 2 doses of MMR. If you wish to have your child exempt from any vaccine for personal, religious or medical reasons, please talk to your health care provider to be informed and stop by the school office to sign the new CIS (Certificate of Immunization Status) exemption form. Thank you in advance for your cooperation, since the end of August and the first day of school get very busy with the start of the new school year.
