There is a lot of anxiety, uncertainty and desperation with the developing events in relation to COVID-19 in our global community. It is during these times that we need to come together as a community and support one another, no matter who they are and not just think of ourselves. It is at this time that we should remember “Love one another as I have loved you” John 13:34-35. Yes, this is a hard time, and a time of sacrifice, but it is through this hardship and sacrifice that we find the true meaning of mission and who we are as disciples of Jesus. This is what we need to keep at the forefront, no matter how difficult things may seem or get. It is important for our children to understand this as well. This is a time where we can be great disciples of Christ. As an educator, leader and parent I have tried to keep you updated at all times via FlexiBuzz of new developments to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all in our school and Parish community. We receive daily communication from the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Education and Catholic Education Melbourne (CEM), which I share with all in our community and implement the best practices available at that time. Your support and understanding of this is noted and greatly appreciated. The advice we are still receiving as this newsletter goes out to parents is that schools will still be remaining open. The above mentioned departments are following the advice of Dr Brett Sutton, Victorian Chief Health Officer, who states that ‘pre-emptive school closures are not likely to be proportionate or effective as a public health intervention to prevent community transmission of COVID-19 at this time’. As I have stated on FlexiBuzz throughout the week, if the school is forced to close, I will notify parents via:FlexiBuzzCareMonkeyHard copy letter sent home with parentsOn Tuesday all families received information on how learning will continue if the school is closed. The staff are to be commended on their work in this space, being so quick and adaptable to come up with a way to enable this. This Home Learning program is a modified program that will enable children to practise and consolidate skills. As we are living in uncertain times and unsure what internet capabilities will be available, the program will be quite a bit of “offline” learning rather than “online” learning. As a school we expect students to be engaging and participating in this program. If there is a school closure, it is important for families to keep to a routine. This helps ground children, especially those who are anxious about what is happening. This routine provides them with stability and reassurance that everything will be ok. Our Home Learning program offers this routine. This is also a wonderful time for families to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company. Make time to do family activities together, whether it be playing games, reading a book, and gardening, exercising or cooking. I have attached further suggestions under our Teaching and Learning section. These memories will be ones that you will all remember forever. Let’s look for the positive in this situation. As they say, every cloud has a silver lining!During this time, it is also very important for parents to continue having discussions with their children about COVID-19 and what is happening in the world. The key is listening and not dismissing children’s concerns or fears. Engage in discussions that are age appropriate, explaining the facts and dispelling any myths. Reassure your children that it will be okay. Unfortunately the news and social media are bombarding us all with lots of different information, so it is good practise to reduce the amount of inappropriate information our children are being exposed too. It is our role as adults, parents and educators to help our children feel safe and calm and these are just a few little ways you can do this. If you would like more information on speaking to your child about COVID-19 please visit: to COVID-19, we have had to cancel and postpone many school events, in particular our Market Night. This was extremely disappointing as so much planning and organising had gone into it. I would like to thank Filomena, the P and F and school staff for the amount of work that went into this. I know that 2021 will be our year and hopefully it will be even bigger and better! Now that Market Night has been cancelled, we will NO longer be finishing at 2.30pm on the Friday 27th March, the last day of term. School will finish at the normal time of 3.15pm. Easter RaffleJust a reminder that our Easter raffle will be drawn next week. Hopefully families are able to donate some Easter eggs or chocolate in this crazy time. Thank you to families who have already donated. Tickets are due back next Wednesday.School PhotosSchool Pix will be here on Friday 17th April for our annual school photos. Order forms will be sent home with children on the last day of term. Please ensure your child has the order form on photo day.Veggie Garden312991584264500195389582359500Our veggies garden has been yielding lots of nutritious food such as carrots, tomatoes, basil, passionfruit, lemons and olives. We interviewed two students (Roselyn and Lachlan) about their day at Nazareth.?What did you do at the Nazareth Taster Day?The Year 5’s said that they went into the auditorium and did a prayer. Nazareth also welcomed the students and explained what they would be doing that day. Each student got a sheet of paper of what they were going to do that day. Every student got different classes and learnt different things like you would in a Secondary School. They got to do art, food technology, wood technology, basketball clinics, STEM, textiles and dance. At the end of the day the Year 5 students went back to the auditorium and watched a performance of some of the Year 5’s.What was your favourite class that you did and why?Rosie said ‘That food technology was her favourite class because she liked decorating the muffins.’Lachlan’s favourite class was the basketball clinic because he got to do cardio in the gym.’What were some of the things you learnt at Nazareth?‘Rosie learned how to make muffins in food technology and she learned how to create a wooden car in wood technology.’‘Lachlan learned how to create a ping pong machine with Lego in STEM and learned how to shoot a hoop in basketball.’What was the hardest thing you learnt at the taster day and what made it so hard?Rosie said that ‘wood technology was the hardest thing because she had to use a saw to cut the wooden car pieces.’Lachlan said ‘that the hardest thing he learned is how to create a chandelier out of recyclables. The reason why it was so hard was connecting everything to the string.’Overall all year 5 students had a great time at Nazareth. On Wednesday the 11th of March it was Bright Colours Day. Students wore their brightest coloured clothes but for the students to do so the children had to bring a gold coin. The money raised on Bright Colours Day will be donated to our sister school in the Philippines Matutinao.Last Thursday the St Elizabeth School students and parents participated in an information night. The children went to Mrs Burke's room where they watched Boss Baby and Kung Fu Panda, while the parents discussed cyber safety. It was a very successful night and the parents learned a lot about online safety and how to protect their Kids from people online.I Sea I Care Ambassadorsleft712800Last week some of Year 5 students were chosen to be our school’s Marine Ambassador program. These students prepared a speech why they wanted to be a marine ambassador, what they wanted to do on a school level to help keep our marine life and waterways unpolluted. The Year 5 students, along with Mrs Ferguson, Mrs Burke and Mrs Hatley-Smith decided that Brodie, Rushil, Krystalena and Alexander would be the best candidates. We can’t wait to hear about what they learn and teach us about being sustainable. center-287141Child Safety0Child SafetyCoronavirus (COVID-19) -2151-214023School Community00School Community16891035877500Holiday time.A reminder that parents as well as our students are able to come Monday – Thursday and borrowing from our library for the holidays.
