Career Self-Reflection I

Maintaining patient files occurs within various types of health care and health care settings. One goal of this course is to help you contemplate choices for your career.

From what you’ve learned about medical records and health care settings so far, highlight the choices that best reflect your career interests and explain your reasons:

1. My career interest at this time is more oriented toward:

• Primary care—point of first contact

• Secondary care—specialist services by referral

• Tertiary care—unusual disorders

Because: Primary care the provision of integrated, accessible health care services by clinicians who are accountable for addressing a large majority of personal health-care needs, developing a sustained partnership with patients, and practicing in the context of family and community." (2007 Morehouse School of Medicine)

I am a people person and enjoy helping patient’s feel better about themselves when he or she is ill. A confidently relationship is shared when a patient can talk to his or her physician and able to have a good understanding about his or her health issues. I read that primary care promotes effective communication with patients and encourages the role of the patient as a partner in health care. Primary care offers counseling, health promotion, diagnosis, in a office, home care, etc. I enjoy one-on-one contact with patients and will patient’s a sense of security. Earning the trust of a patient is very important because the physician has shown the patient his or her concerns about helping the patient get well.

2. If I were to work in a hospital department, I would prefer:

• Ambulatory care

• Ancillary services

• Emergency care

• Critical care

• Surgery

Because: My first choice was becoming a surgical tech because I would assist the physician in operating room (OR) before and after surgery. Before surgery I would prepare the patient by cleaning the area where the surgery is performed. I will also have contact with the patient first before the physician begins surgery. While transporting the patient to the operating room the patient may be afraid and ask questions. I know I can not answer some questions, but I can give the patient some kind of assurance the physician knows what he or she is doing. Surgical tech’s has to know every instrument to pass to the physician in order for surgery to go smoothly. The best part about this job is the tech is learning all body parts and how they function.

3. If I were to work in behavioral health care, I would prefer working with young people with a drug problem.

Because: There are many teens that are depending on some sort of chemical dependence. The reason is recovery is hard when the person already think he or she is alone. An important factor in the persons recovery is families, friends, and significant others are needed in his or her recovery from the illness. There are many Behavioral Healthcare Providers, but the person needs help from someone who has had the same problem. I have depended on a chemical control substance and if the person working for the provider has not had that problem, he or she may not get the message across. I want to make a difference in someone’s life. I talk to teens to explain that he or she can have a better life and his or her life is worth living. He or she wants to trust someone to really help them when he or she thinks he or she is slipping. Someone to call and the person will be there without saying; I will call the person back. When helping these teens, the person has to give 100% support. I am that person.

4. The medical specialty that interests me most is: OB/GYN (Gynecologist).

Because: I love babies. Watching a child come into the world is a miracle from God.

5. The patient population that I am most interested in working with is: Children with special needs

Because: I believe that children with special needs have so much to learn and so much to teach others. As a child growing up without any special needs life is difficult and full of competition. As a child growing up with special needs there are so many more hardships that these children face, some that adults cannot even imagine. Working with this population of patients I will be able to provide these special needs children with the nurture and care they need but while providing them with the independence and room for growth that they desire. At the same time helping them to grow and feel comfortable within the world while growing I understood that though one may think their life is difficult there is someone else in the world struggling even more than I am.

6. The career tracks that interest me most are:

• Registry work

• Coding and reimbursement

• Transcription

• Health information management

• Health services management

• Staff coordination

• Risk management

• Privacy Compliance

• Other: _________

Because: There are many duties in health information management. The nature of the work is assembling the patients’ health information, analyzing the information correctly to ensure the patient’s information is kept confidential, but to make sure that the patient is properly billed. I enjoy working in health information management of the challenges and rewards while working in healthcare. Not only do I what with patient’s charts, I assist the physicians with his or her charts. In the near future the hospital I work for will go from paper charts to electronic. I am excited because this is a new step in technology for this hospital. Most hospitals have started entering all patients’ information into the system. I believe this will cut down on time because there is no assembling. As I continue to working in medical records I will be able to advance to another job duty. I will become knowledgeable to birth certificates. I will enjoy talking to the new mother’s collecting information about the mother and the new born.
