Please check Lost and Found in the cafeteria for jackets, hoodies, lunch boxes, water bottles before March 15, 2019. If you have lost any jewelry, glasses please check with the front office. Warmer weather is coming. Please provide your child (student) with a refillable water bottle. Students do not drink enough during the school day. When students present to the clinic with headaches, stomachaches with no other symptoms it is usually caused from not drinking enough fluids throughout the day to stay hydrated. Hope everyone has an awesome Spring Holiday which is from March 18, 2019 with a return date of March 25, 2019.

Dear Horizon Families, February was a busy month in the Media Center, and it looks like March will be more of the same, beginning with Read Across America Week starting Monday, March 4th. This celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday is always a favorite of anyone who likes to read! On Wednesday, March 6th, we will celebrate our Young Authors in the media center. Many thanks to Joe Interdonato, published writer and teacher, for taking the time to come out and talk with our students. We will begin enjoying poetry this month during media lessons, from PreK to fifth grade. Reading poetry will of course lead to writing poetry, with those original poems being shared on our annual Poem in Your Pocket Day in April. Our recent Dino-mite Book Fair was a huge success! Thank you so much for supporting the media center and its goals. With the proceeds from this book fair we were able to put $3,000 worth of books back into the classrooms! Enjoy your spring break! Hello Kindergarten families! We have been very busy in ELA learning about fiction and nonfiction text and response to literature. Please continue to work with your child on their Sight Words each night. They should also be reading their "SIPPS" stories that they have been bringing home. On the nights when they don't have a new story, have them re-read their other stories. They need to know all 81 sight words by the end of the school year so they need to be practicing! In Math we are learning about addition and subtraction and making ten. In Science we are learning about animals and plants. Thank you parents for all you have done this year for our wonderful students!

The Kindergarten Team

First Grade has been working hard and with only three months left in the school year, we can't stop the momentum now! With Spring Break this month, please continue to work with your child, especially if your child has not mastered sight words yet. We have a lot of fun stuff ahead of us. In Science, we will be working on under water animals, land animals and habitats. Math, we are going to be understanding the meaning of the equal sign, addition and subtraction with three whole numbers (examples: 8 + _ = 11, 5=__-3), greater than and less than symbols. Please continue to review basic addition and subtraction facts with your child. In ELA, we will focus on vocabulary words, main idea and details. These are skills you can practice with your child after they finish reading their books for the nightly reading log. Don't forget we are going to the zoo on May 17th. Please make sure you submit the signed form and payment to your teacher by May 3rd!

The First Grade Team

The second grade has been working on many skills as we get closer to ending the third quarter of the school year. In reading, the second grade has been working on text marking context clues, defining unknown words, and answering comprehension question like who, what, where, when, why, and how to gain understanding of the story. In math we have been working on money skills. Please take the time to work with your child at home to count coins and dollar bills. This takes practice when skip counting different coin combinations. Math word problems can be a difficult concept to master and reinforcement of these concepts at home would be helpful to your child. In Science we have been study all about matter, energy, and forces in motion. Spring break is from March 18-22. We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable break. Keep in mind that this could be a great time for your child to read more or spend time on math and reading concepts on the computer. IXL, Math playground, and Raz Kids are a few good sites through your child's VPortal and online to help them with the reinforcement of these skills. A few minutes each day could be very beneficial to your child if time permits. The second grade is also in the process of planning a field trip. More information will be coming home as we get closer to finalizing the information. If you're interested in chaperoning, please have all forms completed as you must be a cleared volunteer before you can be considered.

The Second Grade Team

3rd Grade: Third graders continue to work hard on learning important skills and concepts from our curriculum. In ELA and Social Studies, we are learning about how groups of people decided to settle in various places throughout the United States and how the geographical features influenced where people have settled. Some of our focus skills will include determining the main idea, asking and answering questions while referring explicitly to text, and learning how to use maps, charts, graphs, and photos in the process. In math, we will review multiplication and division, and solving problems involving area. In Science we will continue our study of plants and how they respond to the environment and their classification. We will move into animal classification after spring break. We are excited about our field trip to Sea World in May. Permission slips were sent home in January with payment information. If you have any questions or need a new permission slip, please see your child's teacher.
