Mrs. Benacquisto – Science

Name ______________________________________________________________Period ____________

Parent Signature _____________________________________________________________________

This direction sheet should be kept in your science folder/binder for the entire year for reference. This paper will be part of folder/binder check each quarter.

Current Event due dates:

Q1 ___________________________________________Q2_________________________________________

Q3 ___________________________________________Q4 _________________________________________

Due Dates:

1. You are given five dates to turn in your current events each quarter. You only need to turn in TWO per quarter.

2. Current events are worth fifty points. You will receive full credit, or a zero. THERE IS NO PARTIAL CREDIT! If your current event has more than five errors, it is a zero. (see below)

3. If you turn in a current event on the first due date and receive a zero, it will not count as long as you turn in another on a different due date and get full credit. You may NOT turn in the same current event with corrections.

4. If you wait until the last two dates to do your current events and receive a zero, it will count as YOU made the decision to procrastinate.

Choosing your article:

1. It must be a science related article.

2. You must turn in the article with the provided current event format sheet.

3. The ARTICLE must be NO LESS THAN 20 sentences long. ZERO IF THE ARTICLE IS TOO SHORT!

4. The article must be from the last two weeks….hence, CURRENT!

5. It may be from the newspaper or online.

6. If using an online source, use the printer friendly version.

7. Make sure the article is not “over your head”. You cannot write about something you do not understand.

8. Most major news outlets have science/health/technology sections on their main page upon which you can click. Suggestions are CNN, ABC, FOX, NBC, New York Times, USA Today, Sun Sentinel, Miami Herald and NASA.

Mistakes to avoid. Five errors = ZERO CREDIT.

1. NO PLAGIARISM. INSTANT ZERO! DO NOT copy and paste and replace words with your thesaurus or “rearrange the sentence”….use YOUR words!!!

2. All writing conventions apply such as spelling, punctuation and capitalization.

3. NO QUOTES in your work. It is the lazy man’s plagiarism.

4. DO NOT use pronouns in your work UNLESS you have referred to the person/thing in the same sentence.

5. PLEASE…..do not use A LOT!!!

6. Do not begin a sentence with a number written as a number. Spell out all single digits.

7. When defining terms, do not use a part of the word in the definition.

When you have filled out your current event format paper, staple this on top of the article and turn in on the due date. If you are absent, it must be turned in the day of your return. No “late” current events will be accepted. You may type the current event if you wish by downloading the format from my website and removing the lines and replacing with your work.
