Human Anatomy & Physiology 2016-2017

Instructor: William A. Simmons, Ph.D.

Room 131

469-272-2000 x7240

Grading:

Tests (including major projects, if any) = 40%

Quizzes (written quizzes, lab reports, lab practicals, most extra credit is added to quiz grades),

Homework (classwork and work completed outside of class) = 60%

Behavioral Expectations (Short Version):

All district and campus policies are enforced.

Behavioral Expectations (Long Version):

1. School rules are enforced at all times.

2. Turn in all homework before the bell rings. Put it in the green basket. Make sure your name is on it. You can’t have it back to show your friend.

3. No standing in the doorway or in the hall between classes. Come in the room and stay in the room.

4. Be in your seat -- not just in the room -- when the bell rings. We start when the bell rings.

5. No food, drink, candy or gum allowed in room.

6. No restroom passes given during class. Go between classes.

7. Respect others who are listening, learning and thinking by remaining quiet.

8. No using mirrors, hairbrushes, lotion or cosmetics during class. Do that in the restroom.

9. No passing around notes, jewelry or personal items during class. It distracts everyone.

10. Remain in your seat until the bell rings to end class. No lining up at the door.

11. Personal electronic devices must have a valid educational—not entertainment—purpose.

12. Only have required items (paper, pens, worksheets, etc.) on your desk or in the lab area. Put backpacks and personal items off your desk, under your desk, away from your desk, anywhere but on your desk!

Microscopy:

Histology and microscopic anatomy is important to understanding the function of cells, tissues and organs. Proper and effective use of a microscope is will be reviewed, and students will be expected to become competent microscopists early in the year. Although histology will be one of the first topics studied, laboratory microscopy will be routinely used throughout the year.

Lab Dissections:

Discovery learning by carefully dissecting organs is the traditional – and usually very effective – method of learning basic anatomy. Students will be instructed in the proper and safe use of dissection instruments before performing dissections, and expected to use these laboratory exercises as valuable learning experiences. Students will dissect preserved eyes, spinal cords, brains, kidneys and hearts from goat, pig or sheep. Dissections are performed using metal surgical instruments, goggles, plastic aprons and non-latex gloves. After training, students will be expected to carefully clean and maintain all dissection materials throughout the year. Flagrant misuse of these materials will result in severe and appropriate penalties that will diminish the student’s ability to learn anatomy and could jeopardize their eligibility to remain enrolled in this course.

Lab Reports:

Most lab reports will be in the form of labeled sketches from organ dissections or microscopic observations. Making carefully-labeled sketches has been proven to help most students learn and retain anatomical concepts. Artistic ability is not required to make or label these sketches, but attention to detail and mastery of vocabulary is very important. Grading will be based on completeness and accuracy of sketches.

Quizzes and Tests:

Students will take several objective multiple choice and matching assessments. Terminology quizzes over 15-25 terms will be given most Fridays. Tests and quizzes covering material discussed in class will be given approximately every 2-3 weeks. Many of these content-based assessments will include authentic clinical scenarios.

Lab Practicals:

Laboratory Practical Quizzes will be used to demonstrate student mastery of concepts investigated in the lab. Students will be expected to identify key features of intact and dissected specimens.

Projects:

Disease Diaries, Anatomy News, Tissues Project and Body Systems Projects are described following the syllabus.

Extra Credit:

Opportunities for optional extra credit, usually added to the student’s lowest quiz grade, will be available at least once every six weeks. Extra credit usually concerns aspects of clinical medicine such as disorders or diseases of the body systems being studied.
