Changing Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers

When changing an improper fraction to a mixed number:

1) Divide the numerator by the denominator.

2) Make the quotient into the whole number.

3) Place the remainder over the divisor.

Ex. Change 7/3 into a mixed number

Numerator 7

Denominator 3

7 divided by 3 = 2 with a remainder of 1

2 wholes and 1 third are left over

So, 7/3 = 2 1/3 as a mixed number.

When changing mixed numbers to improper fractions:

1) Multiply the whole number by the denominator.

2) Add the numerator to the product.

3) Write this sum over the denominator.

Ex. Change 2 ¾ into an improper fraction.

3 Numerator

whole # 2 4 Denominator

2 wholes x 4 = 8

8 plus 3 = 11

So, 2 ¾ = 11/4 as an improper fraction.
