ESL Testing and Registration for New Students

English Language Program

*Three Kinds of Classes Offered: Fully Online, Blended, Fully In-Person

THE ESL PLACEMENT TEST CAN NOW BE TAKEN ON CAMPUS OR ONLINE.

Getting ready for the online ESL placement test, you will need: A computer (desktop or laptop) with video/webcam and audio capabilities. A quiet place in your home without distractions. To be willing to be on camera during the test, where the proctor will be monitoring you and viewing your

computer screen as you take the test.

For both online and on campus testing: ? Have an ID with your picture and your name. The photo ID can be a driver's license, passport, or government

issued ID. ? Testing, placement, and registering take about one and a half hours.

The ESL placement test (both online and on campus) will have two parts: The first part will consist of:

? A short typed writing test ? A computer-based reading test The second part will consist of: ? A short speaking test with a teacher ? Review of test results and course selection with the teacher

Family members can be with you. If you need to have the same class schedule as a family member or friend,

tell us. We can arrange for you to meet together with an advisor. You will access the MyHarper Student Portal on the computer and register from home. You can pay for your classes online. Payment is due within 48 hours of registration.

FALL English Language Program (ELP)

? Fall Courses are 8, 12, or 16 weeks, and courses are offered online, on campus, or in a blended format. Courses marked by a B are blended (half in person, half online). Courses marked by a W are fully online (Web). Some courses are fully in person / on campus.

? Students can work towards an English Series for Professionals certificate. Select from classes with an symbol.

ESL Business Communication Skills 4 credit hours This course is designed to help people who are already working or planning to work in a business career. It will cover such topics as negotiation and presentation skills, using proper telephone protocol, interacting in a business meeting, writing business-appropriate emails and other online text, and learning popular business idioms and phrases.

ESL: Guided Language Lab Instruction 1 credit hour This course develops English language skills for beginning to advanced students of English as a Second Language. Following consultation with the instructor, students work independently in the language laboratory on the skills of their choice and at the recommended level of proficiency.

All Level IV-V Reading and Writing ESL students who want to enroll in non-ESL courses need approval from an ESL advisor.

This process continues each semester until the student has met the prerequisites for English 101.
