Position Summary: Under supervision of the Water Treatment Superintendent, the Maintenance Person/ Plant Operator is responsible for the daily maintenance and operation of I) twenty-three (23) ground water wells, II) two (2) water treatment plants, III) two (2) booster stations, and IV) five (5) water storage tanks, to ensure that the department provides an adequate supply of quality water to its customers. In addition, the Maintenance Person/ Plant Operator is responsible for maintaining accurate and up-to-date records as required by local, state, and federal regulating agencies.

Essential (Primary) Duties: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties will be required and assigned.

1. Perform preventative maintenance duties and minor equipment repairs 2. Maintain elevated tank altitude valves, which includes replacing leathers and installing and maintaining

solenoid valves 3. Perform facility housekeeping (interior and exterior). 4. Operate a variety of equipment including forklift, tractor, well cleaning rig, in a safe and effective

manner. Regularly check vehicles and equipment to ensure proper mechanical functioning. 5. Maintenance Person / Plant Operator is required to work weeklong Stand-By-Operator shifts, which

rotate each week based on the number of operators (i.e. 3 operators = 3-week shift rotations). 6. Enter data for operations and maintenance into computer programs.

Skills and Experience Requirements

1. Well versed in repair of electrical circuits and motor controls center. 2. Training and experience working with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and Programmable Logic

Controllers (PLCs).

3. Well versed in the repair of chemical feed pumps and motors ranging in size from ?hp motors, to 100hp well motors, and 400hp high service pump motors.

4. Analytical problem-solving skills required. 5. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, calculate decimals and percentages, and measure data. 6. Ability to operate a variety of automated facility equipment including equipment control panels,

analytical devices in laboratories, and related appurtenances. 7. Ability to operate a variety of automated office machines including copier, computer, telephone

system, etc. Other requirements: keyboarding / CRT; attention to detail; monitoring equipment; detailed inspection; and transcription / proofreading. 8. Individual will have contact with the general public and other utilities or their representatives and must conduct himself/herself professionally.

Education and/or Qualifications: High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training in a related field. Experience in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants. An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant work experience, which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position are preferred.

The physical activity expected is climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, sitting, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions; tasks require visual perception and discrimination.

Licenses or Certifications: Must have a valid Indiana Driver's License and maintain it at all times. Must have good driving record, sufficient to be covered by city insurance as a driver while on duty. Must be able to obtain Class B CDL within 12 months of hiring and maintain at all times. Must be able to obtain WT3 certification within 30 months.

Judgment: Safety conscious. Must be well versed in OSHA requirements.

Working Conditions: The minimum working conditions for this position requires the employee to work both inside and outside, be exposed to temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour, be exposed to temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour, be exposed to noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions in which one or more of the following symptoms affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.

Ability to work either independently or as a member of a team.

Ability to understand hazardous communication and work within job safety requirements, including proper handling of hazardous chemicals in potentially dangerous situations.

Remarks: Position requires individual to work Stand-by on a rotating basis and be called out any time after regular work hours when necessary. Must reside in Bartholomew County or adjoining county within six (6) months of employment. This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol- Free Workplace Program which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, and return-to-duty testing and follow-up testing.
