SCHOLARSHIPS FOR

FHA-HERO MEMBERS & HOME ECONOMICS CAREERS & TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS

TYPES OF SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

• FHA-HERO Leadership Scholarship (Blake Kelley Memorial); Application due: March 1

Awarded during the annual State FHA-HERO Meeting to an active FHA-HERO member who has shown outstanding leadership and service at the state, region, and/or chapter levels; has made personal contributions to the home, school, and community; has a scholastic average of at least a B (3.0/4.0); has financial need; and plans to major or train in a Home Economics Careers and Technology related field at a university, community college or specialized private training/education program. More than one scholarship may be given depending on available funds.

• Rose DeBenedetti Home Economics Teachers Association of California (HETAC) Scholarship;

Application due: March 1

Awarded during the annual State FHA-HERO Meeting to an active FHA-HERO member who has shown leadership and service at the state, region, and/or chapter levels; has made personal contributions to the home, school, and community; has a scholastic average of at least a B (3.0/4.0); has financial need; and plans to major or train in a Home Economics Careers and Technology RELATED field at a university, community college or specialized private training/education program. In addition to a monetary award, the student and the student’s primary FHA-HERO advisor will receive complementary one-year memberships to the Home Economics Teachers Association of California (HETAC).

Note: A student can only receive one of the HETAC sponsored scholarships in any given year.

• Home Economics Teacher Scholarship; Sponsored by the Home Economics Teachers Association of

California (HETAC); Application due: March 1

Awarded during the annual State FHA-HERO Meeting to an active FHA-HERO member who has shown leadership and service at the state, region, and/or chapter levels; has made personal contributions to the home, school, and community; has a scholastic average of at least a B (3.0/4.0); has financial need; and plans to major in Home Economics Careers and Technology and become a HECT teacher. They will be going to a university, community college or specialized private training/education program. In addition to a monetary award, the student and the student’s primary FHA-HERO advisor will receive complementary one-year memberships to the Home Economics Teachers Association of California (HETAC).

Note: A student can only receive one of the HETAC sponsored scholarships in any given year.

• California Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (CA-AFCS) Scholarship;

Application due: March 1

This is a scholarship that will be awarded during the annual State FHA-HERO Meeting for a graduating high school senior who has been active in FHA-HERO and who plans to become a Family and Consumer Sciences/Home Economics Teacher; and has a scholastic average of at least a B (3.0/4.0).

• California Home Economics Education Foundation (CHEEF) Scholarship; Application due: March 1

Awarded during the annual State FHA-HERO Meeting or Leadership & Management Conference to a student enrolled in a Consumer and Family Studies (CFS) course or Home Economics Related Occupation (HERO) course, who plans to major or train in a Home Economics Careers and Technology related field at a university, community college or specialized private training/education program; who has shown leadership and service in the school, home, and community; has a scholastic average of at least a B (3.0/4.0); and has financial need.

• The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) Scholarship;

No application to State Office is required to receive this scholarship

This is a scholarship that is being offered to FHA-HERO Officers during their junior or senior year who plan to attend the CIA. FHA-HERO officers will specify on their CIA application which FHA-HERO position they held. Serving as a Region Officer qualifies for $500, State Officer qualifies for $1,000, and a National Officer qualifies for $1,500. These scholarships are non-renewable and are awarded for the highest position held. This scholarship is for CIA applicants only.

ELIGIBILITY:

For the scholarships listed above, only students who have taken Home Economics Careers and Technology courses at the secondary level and who plan to major or train in a Home Economics Careers and Technology related field at a university, community college or specialized private training/education program are eligible for these scholarships. In order to receive the scholarship funds, students must submit a notice of matriculation from the school, college or university that shows evidence that he/she is enrolled in course work toward the approved Home Economics Careers and Technology related specialization. • FHA-HERO State Executive Council Scholarship Application due: March 1

Awarded during the annual State FHA-HERO Meeting to an active high school senior FHA-HERO member who has shown outstanding leadership and service at the state, region, and/or chapter levels; has made personal contributions to the home, school, and community; has a scholastic average of at least a B (3.0/4.0); and plans to pursue any major at a university, community college or specialized private training/education program. More than one scholarship may be given depending on available funds.

• State FHA-HERO Officer Scholarships; Application due: March 1

Annually awarded during the State Leadership Meeting to State FHA-HERO Officers who successfully complete their term of office and meet the established criteria including having a scholastic average of at least a B (3.0/4.0). This scholarship is for each officer who meets the criteria making them eligible to receive a scholarship up to the amount of $1,000. ELIGIBILITY:

Only State FHA-HERO Officers who successfully complete the requirements for their term of office

and meet the established criteria are eligible to apply and receive this scholarship. In order to receive

scholarship funds, former state officers must be enrolled in an advanced training or post-secondary

program at a university, community college, or specialized private training/education program.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

This application and all attached material MUST be typed. All required information must be submitted for applications to be reviewed. Please submit only 1 application with all boxes checked for the scholarships being applied for and the supplementary materials required for each scholarship applied for. If additional space is needed, please attach an extra sheet.

Attach the following to the application:

• One sealed official high school transcript, including your grade-point average (GPA).

• A one-page typed statement indicating why you feel you deserve the scholarship(s), your plans upon high

school and college graduation, and any additional information you feel would assist the committee

in evaluating your application.

• Four letters of recommendation that provide information pertaining to personal qualifications,

character, leadership contributions, financial need, scholastic rating, and the benefit that can be obtained

from a university, community college or specialized private training/education program. One letter of

recommendation must come from each of the following categories:

(a) The high school principal, vice-principal, or counselor

(b) Your Home Economics Careers and Technology instructor or FHA-HERO advisor

(c) A community leader -- such as employer, minister, etc.

(d) An FHA-HERO member or high school student

• For FHA-HERO Leadership Scholarship (Blake Kelley Memorial and Leadership) applicants only:

Attach a typed statement from you answering the question: "What have you gained from your leadership experiences and what have you contributed to the California Association on the chapter, region, and/or state level?"

• For FHA-HERO State Executive Council Scholarship applicants only:

Attach a one page typed letter highlighting your FHA-HERO related activities throughout your membership. Participation in competitions, Golden State Degrees, and leadership positions will be taken into special consideration.

• For California Association of Family and Consumer Sciences applicants only:

Attach a typed statement addressing the following points: leadership activities, community service, career plans, and relevant financial information.

• For State FHA-HERO Officer applicants only:

Attach a typed statement answering the following questions:

1. How have you effectively fulfilled the duties of your office?

2. As a state officer, how have you contributed to the goals and the expansion of FHA-HERO?

3. How have you served as a positive role model for other FHA-HERO members during your term of office?

4. How will you use what you learned as a state officer to achieve your future and career goals?
