I remember Kevin as a kid in my brother’s class/year at Timaru Boys High. He is obviously one who has gone far and had further to rise were it not for this terrible tragedy. My condolences to his family, I'm sure he was a great husband & father.

- Rob Hart, Dunedin, NZ.

I am deeply saddened over the death of Kevin Smith, known to most of us as Ares. My heart aches for his family as well as Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor, who must feel this loss as well. I enjoyed his performance in Xena, he was a great actor. The God of War now has truly joined the immortals. He will live on in the hearts of his fans. Rest in Peace Kevin.

- Joyce Jones

I can't even begin to express my shock and sadness upon learning of Kevin Smith's passing. I have enjoyed countless hours watching him as the indestructible Ares on Xena. He had an awesome presence, and, apparently from what I've read, not only was he an extremely beautiful man to look at, but has a beautiful spirit as well - and that will never be gone. My deepest sympathies to his all his family and friends. He has most certainly been taken from them too early. My thoughts and prayers are with them at this deeply sad time. I hope they will eventually be able to take some comfort in the knowledge that their beloved husband, father, son and friend will be remembered fondly in many hearts around the world and very definitely by this one.

- Janet, Conroe, Texas

Kevin Smith seemed like that kind of man that we wish all our "Hollywood Heroes" were. Handsome, funny, and mostly a down to earth family man. I am glad that I came to know his work through the world of Xena. Thanks Kevin, for sharing your talent.

- T. Cornell

I wish to express my heart felt condolences to Kevin Smith's family and friends. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

- Debra Stevens, U.S.A.

As a huge Xena fan, I enjoyed Kevin's portrayal of the character, Ares. I loved to hate Ares!! He did the role so well. I am very sad about the unfortunate passing of Kevin Smith. When I first learned of his death, I cried, as if I had lost a good friend. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to meet him just a few months ago for the first time. I met him at the Dearborn Michigan convention last October. I was truly amazed at how he acted and treated us. Most famous stars with big muscles are snobs or jerks - but not him. He was sweet and funny. He was almost embarrassed to take off his jacket so we could see his muscles! He was like one of us. My condolences to Sue, the boys, and the Xena family. Thank you for sharing Kevin with us. Godspeed, Kevin.

- DiAnn Sances, Chicago, ILL, USA

Living in the UK I never got to meet you, but your picture is on my wall and your spirit lives forever in my heart. My love goes to your family and the cast and crew of Xena. May you rest in peace.

- Diana

It’s hard to express how I’ve been feeling since I heard the news about Kevin’s accident and then death. I begin to wonder how his family is coping. My deepest heartfelt condolences go out to Suzanne, Oscar, Tyrone, Willard and Kevin’s parents Geoff & Yvonne. Kevin was a special man of that there is no doubt. He was a gifted actor and his special talent entertained many around the world. He never seemed to have a negative thing to say about anyone, always seeing some good where others might have missed it.

He touched many lives over the years and mine was no exception. He had a way of making a person feel special. When he spoke to you, nothing else mattered; he gave you his all. Kevin brought joy and happiness into our lives and because of him we made friends with people we might otherwise never have had the good fortune to be in contact with. Kevin was a star in the truest sense of the word, but what separated him from others was that he wouldn’t allow himself to be put up on a pedestal. Kevin’s untimely death has been felt around the world. It is time for us to celebrate the man that he was. Kevin will live on in our thoughts and be forever in our hearts.

Kev, you once told me that we all have to go home sometime, but Kevin, did you have to go home so soon? We love you Kevin and will never forget you. You will continue to live as long as we remember you. Rest in Peace Dearheart.

- Bernardine, Toronto, Canada

It seems like only yesterday when I met Kevin at a Xena convention in Jax, Florida. He was every bit a wonderful human as he was an actor. I am shocked by his death, and send my sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

- Cheryl Ruppert, USA

I am very saddened and shock to hear about the death of Kevin Smith. My heart goes out to his family and friends at this time. Kevin was taken way before his time and he will be missed, no one will ever know how great he really was. I’m just sorry that there is nothing I can do to take away the pain and sadness for his wife and kids at this time.

- Angel

Kevin was a great man, a great actor and a great singer! It's a terrible loss for all of us! My condolences to his family and his friends! May he rest in peace!

- Annick, Montreal, Canada

I live in the US and just heard the news of Kevin's passing five days after the fact. Now I'm searching to find out what happened, but I want to say a few things before I get to that. I was a great fan of the show Xena: Warrior Princess before I visited New Zealand in Spring (my Fall) of 1999. I was sort of tickled by the idea of seeing one (or more) of its stars while I lived in Auckland for three months. I was fortunate to see Kevin Smith and other fine NZ comedians perform improv comedy on a couple of occasions. I was really blown away by how funny he was - what a range of talent! I was also impressed by how humble he was - an international star doing comedy in a sports bar, although he probably just loved performing that much. If I ever make it back to NZ (and I hope I do) I will miss seeing him.

- Brita Maia

To Kevin's family, I offer my deepest sympathy. When I read in the newspaper 2 days ago about what had happened, I was moved to tears. I loved watching Kevin as Ares on Xena and Hercules. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have watched the shows every single week. Kevin has given me, as a fan, many hours of pleasure and escapism from a stressful world. When the show ended, I was very disappointed, but I did look forward to seeing him in future shows and movies. Now that will not come to be. The world has lost a wonderful person and great talent. I shall miss him.

- Bonnie Stackpole, Boston, Mass, USA

Kevin will be greatly missed through out the world. He was a wonderful actor with lots of talent. My sorrow goes out to his wife, children and family members. It’s hard to say anything comforting during this awful loss, except for maybe that Kevin is in the best hands possible.

- Debbie, Phoenix, AZ

What can be said about this whole matter? The world will miss Kevin the husband, the father, the actor, the good man that he is. We will miss him greatly. Our prayers and thoughts, go out to his family. This is not just his family lost but, the world. We love you Kevin, may God give you peace and rest, Amen.

- Vincent & Felicia Green of Washington DC

'Ares' is my favorite male character on Xena. Kevin Smith was such an excellent actor that he brought much charisma to 'Ares'. He was so young and that is probably why I can add him to the very small number of celebrity deaths that I have felt saddened by. I feel very badly for his children, wife, family and friends. My thoughts go out to them. If I could say one thing to Mr Smith it would be, "Thank you for giving me many hours of enjoyment watching you as 'Ares'. I was looking forward to your future endeavors. May peace be with you and yours."

- Kristie J.

Kevin Smith was a very talented actor that I loved to watch perform. I live in the USA and there are very few actors with his talent that are as down to earth as he appeared to be in his interviews. He loved his wife and kids and would tell people he was not a sex symbol, he was just a husband and dad who happened to be an actor. My prayers go out to his family and friends.

- Linda

A great man, a great personality and a great person who touched and made a different to so many lives. My thoughts go out to all his family and friends and also the New Zealand Public who I know share the grief. - Ange, Auckland New Zealand

With heartfelt sympathy, my prayers for courage, strength and love are with Kevin's family and friends at this time of overwhelming sadness. May they find comfort in one another and in sharing the many happy memories of this wonderfully talented and kind man.

- Dawn Joseph

Another tragedy for us Kiwis. My condolences to the Smith family. I enjoyed Kevin on the Panel, funny guy. May God be your refuge and strength! Much Alofa.

- The family from numba eleve.

My sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Kevin Smith. He was a fine actor and seemed to be a great family man. He was so young and had so much going for him. I will keep his family and friends in my prayers. My deepest sympathy.

- Paul Menone, New Jersey, USA

Oh Kevin, so many years ago I met you. I was 25, you were 26. You shook my hand and kissed my cheek … you stopped my heart and touched my soul. From that moment I was smitten, I admire and adore you. Even then, as a young man, I could see your star was beginning to rise. I’ve followed your career, and watched your successes.

Then I met you again, 10 years later and to my surprise, you remembered my name. You kissed my cheek and said hello. You treated me like an old friend, not someone you had only met once before. You stopped my heart and touched my soul once again. So beautiful, stunningly handsome; so beautiful, but beautiful on the inside as well as on the outside. You seem to be almost completely unaware of your own beauty, and bemused (or amused?) by other’s perception of your physical presence.

I can’t believe you’re gone Kev; too young and with so much to still look forward to. This definitely proves that only the good die young. For a long time you have been my hero, Kevin, and for all time you will remain my hero. Your star has stopped rising now, at it’s highest point, the brightest star in the night sky. You will be greatly missed and always remembered with love and admiration. I hope that in some other lifetime, I’ll be lucky enough to have you kiss my cheek and say hello … to stop my heart and touch my soul. Safe journey, dear one.

- Kim, Auckland, New Zealand

Our deepest sympathies to the family of Kevin Smith. We will never forget you for your part as ares in Xena. May Jah guide you on your new journey. You were truly a warrior. Kia kaha Arohanui.

- Your fans in the Kaitaia and Far North areas of Aotearoa.r.i.p.

I cannot tell you how shocked I was to hear the news of Kevin Smith's death. I still think I'm dreaming. I was a major fan of his. I want to let the people of New Zealand know that we in the United States loved Kevin and I just knew after his first American movie he would take over Hollywood and all of America. Kevin was a wonderful actor and we will all miss him. To his family please know that he is with God now but will live on forever because of your love and the love of his fans. My prayers are with you.

- Deborah, Richmond, VA, USA

We were very shocked to hear of his death, it hit us as if it were our own family member, we may not have known him personally, but through the magic of television he was as if he was part of the family as well as the rest of the actors, he will be missed very much and life will not be the same without him, he was so very talented. From the Gage family to the Smith family are prayers and condolences are with you. God bless to you all, and know that he may not be with us in body, but he will be forever in our hearts in spirit and no one can ever take that away.

- Sandy Gage

My thoughts go out to all those that were lucky enough to know Kevin, and to his family and friends left behind. May he rest in peace.

- Simon, Sydney

My condolences to the family of Kevin Smith. He will be greatly missed. Even though he has made his transition, he will be ever close to his loved ones. Love and light.

- Mary

I never knew Kevin, but I still feel a great loss because he had a great talent and seemed to be a great person. I can only believe that God felt he had accomplished all he had to in this life time and that it was time to move up to next level. He will never truly be gone because we see little bits and pieces of him in everyone we know and if you accomplish that before you go then you have been a God Send. So we were all fortunate to be able to share in his life. Love Always.

- Tee.

It is sad that you lived so short a time in this world. You brought so much joy and happiness with your Acting to those who admired and worshipped you. My prayers are with your family, friends and fans who will always love you. At this time we mourn you, but in our hearts you will always be. We will never forget you. You were once Ares-God of War. Now you live with God...As our Angel watching over us...RIP Kevin. Love always.

- Your fan, Elizabeth Pabon

I was shocked and saddened to hear that Kevin Smith was dead. His death is a terrible loss to all of us who are Xena Fans, and the Xenaverse will never be the same. All Hail Ares, the God of War is dead. Long live Ares. My condolences to his family I truly hope that with the outpouring of love and help that this will help ease the pain.

- Lee Flanagan

Thank you to Sue and your family for sharing Kevin with us. I'm sure there were times you where apart and were sad. Your head must be full of, if only, and whys. Fans were shocked and stunned but we can only imagine what you are going through. They say behind every "great" man is a "great" woman. Please let NZ and the rest of Kevin's fans around the world embrace you in your time of sorrow. You don't have to be told what great and special man Kevin was you know first hand. It made me stop and think and thank god for my beautiful husband and 2 amazing daughters. As we move on with our lives you are left with the harsh reality of your loss and I'm truly sorry for that. May god bless you and ease your pain and be with you in your darkest hour. My prayers are with you and yours. Gods speed Kevin you are missed.

- Belinda (Christchurch)

I knew you once, Kevin as a former pupil at T.B.H.S. We met in passing ...I was a fiddler ...contemps with Tim, Liz, Neil, and was it Steve who played the bass guitar? Condolences to your family.

- Peter Davidson

The untimely death of my favorite actor Kevin Smith has saddened my heart and soul every time I see his caring face. He lived his dreams unlike so many of us. I miss his sweet laugh and will think of him always. There were no words to describe him and still aren't. He was the man who had a devilish smile and knew how to bring laughter to the set. But like so many great actors his name is permanently in the stars and he can see it fine from where he is now!

So sorry for Kevin's family, a tragic loss to NZ, he was a STAR who will continue to shine. God Bless.

- Neil & Angela, Glasgow / Scotland.

When we were kids, Kevin used to play helicopter with us on the back lawn at the annual family Christmas barbecue. When we got older, and his face became well-known first in New Zealand, and then the world, we'd have jam sessions in his Dad's shed. All the old codgers who lived by the river would slurp out of the keg, while anyone who could, played the guitar. Always at the centre was Kevin, guiding those who missed their chord changes, with a huge grin. Never big-headed, always laughing, and always ducking off to check on his kids and wife, while everyone collapsed drunk outside. Kevin was a man of immense talent, and as everyone whose ever met him says, a bloody nice guy. We are gutted by his loss, and our loving thoughts are with Sue and the boys, Aunty Yvonne, Uncle Geoff and Sandy. Lots of love.

- Simon,Sarah and Cathy (London/Timaru)

A sad loss to this country. Our thoughts are with family and friends, he will be missed by a great many of us. A wonderful man taken before his time, he will live on in film.

- Shirley Goodman

He was a terrific actor as Ares. My sympathy to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

- Rose

How blessed we were to have such an awesome man in our midst. Although he has gone now he will not be forgotten. I am sure all of NZ is very proud. Wow Kevin you sure did make your mark. God Bless to the Whanau (family). Arohanui.

- Anita, Auckland, NZ

Another tragic loss for NZ. He was a good actor destined for the big time. My prayers are with the Smith family.

- Vinay Akhil

Kevin will always be with those he loved and those who loved him he will always be in the hearts of family , friends and fans! deepest condolences and sympathies to his family for the passing of Kevin! Keeping Kevin, his family and friends in our hearts and prayers!

- Destenee

I never knew you, I wished I had. My deepest sympathies to the Smith Family.

- Anna

I was a fan of the Hercules series, partly because of the way Mr. Smith played the character, Ares. From the way he smiled and played scenes in a "tongue-in-cheek" manner, one could see that he had a great sense of humor and did not take his notoriety and status too seriously. I had looked forward to seeing him in other roles. Condolences to his wife and children.

- Linda Dombrosky, Pittsburgh, PA, U.S.A.

At a NZ School Trustees Annual Conference I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Kevin Smith & Alison Wall perform Theatre Sports. It has stayed in my mind as being one of the most enjoyable nights of entertaining I have been to, and I've been to plenty. A tragic ending to a wonderful performer and a nice man, my condolences to his wife and young boys.

- Viv Chapman, Turakina

The eyes, that grin, that sweetness and charm...we've lost a great one in this new year. What Kevin gave to us can never be taken away: Memories, laughter, and good times. We love you and will miss you, Kev. God's speed.

- The Verruso & Lebrecht Families Buffalo NY, Schuylerville, NY

Kevin Smith has had a profound impact on my life. From first seeing him in Xena and Hercules, to becoming interested in his other work, to wanting to learn more about his beloved homeland of New Zealand. Through Kevin, I discovered a tiny country with a huge heart, and for that I am eternally grateful. I mourn along with all New Zealanders at the loss of this great actor, musician and comedian, and wonderful human being. He will always be an inspiration to me: his passion for life, his kindness, his humour, his humility, and the pure love that emanated from him, to everyone he met and in everything he did. My thoughts and prayers to Kevin’s family and friends. May you find strength in the knowledge that he so deeply touched so many...

- Julie Stoller, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Kevin's death is a real loss to our country and his popular face will be greatly missed. I am so glad I have the "Angels" Christmas CD on which he sings a song - something to remember him by.

- Kathryn

Deepest sympathy to Kevin's family and friends at this difficult time. New Zealand and the world, has lost a wonderful actor and all round good bloke, the world is a poorer place with his passing.

- Lesley, Dunedin, N.Z

To all his family friends and fans, my heart felt condolences go out to you. I was shocked and saddened to hear of his death. Mr Smith was one of my favorite actors.

- Alicia Crider, USA

When I first heard Kevin had died like so many in the Xenaverse were shocked to hear that such a sweet man had gone. To the Smith Family, I send you my prayers in helping you over this terrible time. There are no words that can be rightly expressed at this time. Thank you for sharing Kevin with the world as he was a great actor and a super nice person. I am glad that my roommates and I who are hard of hearing had a chance to meet Kevin for just a minute at the Orlando Convention a few years Back and he was really a sweet and charming guy who also had that shyness appeal as well. Once again, thank you for sharing him with us. God Speed Kevin and you'll be sorely missed by not only friends, and family but also fans. God has surely gained an angel.

- Kelly

My thoughts are with Kevin Smith's family. Three boys no longer have a father. My sons are their age. I am incredibly sad for the Smith family.

- Simone, New Plymouth.

Kevin Smith was a man who brought joy to a lot of people, and I am so sorry for his family. He made me laugh, get mad and cry at times, and I will miss him. I am sure Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor and Kevin Sorbo and Michael Hearst and the rest of the cast will mourn his passing for a long sad time. Thanks for all the laughs Kevin, rest in peace and go in love.

- Tammy Martin, USA

I did not learn of the death of my beloved Kevin Smith until I saw it on Entertainment Tonight, an American show on Monday night. After learning of his death I did what many people did- I cried. Cried for a man I never met in my life, yet thru the magic of television, came to know and love this man, this character, this person. Then I put my Xena: Warrior Princess soundtrack CD from the first season in the CD player and played track 5 ,"Burial " that beautiful, mournful, soul wrenching funeral dirge sung by Lucy Lawless in a language I don’t understand. It was the only way I could pay homage for a man who went away too soon and left us all feeling empty. I played this same piece of music at my own Mother's funeral, I can only hope Lucy sings it for Kevin at his. You will be missed, Kevin.

- Lisa Marshall, Little Rock, Arkansas, USA

I have been an avid fan of Kevin Smith's since he first appeared on Hercules and Xena, much like most here in the states. I was shocked to learn about his passing and have been in awe of the whole event. My sincerest condolences to Kevin's wife and three lovely children. He will be missed but will remain forever in our thoughts and hearts.

- Michelle Johnson, Buffalo, NY

Thanks for coming Kevin. Condolences to your family and friends.

- Doug

I looked up at the sky tonight and wondered where Kevin was at that moment. Then I saw a star shining brighter than all the rest and I knew it had to be him because it shined as bright in the heavens as Kevin's smile did here on earth. May your light shine down forever on your beautiful family and all the people who loved you most.

- Lady Leonie

I was shock to hear that Kevin Smith had died recently, my prayers go out to the family and friends who knew him best.

- Jason Paulus, USA (Indiana).

His loss is magnified through many tears. It has been a pleasure to watch Kevin Smith rise in the art of theatre, film and Television performance. One of those pleasures that has been subtle and ever increasing with each new talent Kevin demonstrated over the years. As talented people from Aotearoa/NZ (home) rise in recoginition and appreciation around the world, the closer they feel to us and their success becomes ours. It follows then, that their lose is also ours and hence mine. My sympathy to Kevin’s friends, his family and loved ones - the feeling of lose is likely to be magnified many times. I hope in some way that our thoughts and aroha keep you afloat until you get past all the hard stuff and after shocks and you adjust to the space that is left.

- Char Macpherson

God speed and goodbye. You will be sorely missed. We love and care for you and your family. Your work will be forever in our hearts.

- Karen, Christchurch

When I was reading headline news and learned of Kevin's death, I was in disbelief... staring at the headline. A little part of me died with him. I loved the way he played Ares with a humor it seemed only Mr Smith could provide. I wish I could hug his family to let them know he is loved by many, many people . Now i will watch the reruns of Xena more closely to soak up ALL those wonderful performances of Kevin's and the other actors. he was truly a gem.

- Laurie Larson, Michigan, USA

I am deeply sadend by such a great loss. Of all the parts that were played on Xena and Hercules, Ares stood out the most and Kevin Smith made that role a fixture for the whole world to see. He gave it life energy, laughter, sorrow, love and yes hate (of Ares) not him. I was hoping that a major motion picture of Xena coming back with Ares (K S) in but now no one even want to think of a thing because the best of the best is not with God. May he rest in peace and may his family be blessed.

- Joel

I don't really know what to say, this is really sad news, when I first read about it I was so shocked, couldn't really believe it. I feel so sad because of it, and all my sympathy to Kevin's family and friends, i can't imagine how they must be feeling right now, if I who didn't even know him in person feel like this, but in dark times like this there is something that still makes me smile and that is the certainty that he will never be forgotten and his sweet memory will remain on the hearts of all those persons who knew him, and respected him.

- M, Santiago/Chili

My name is Vivienne Mansfield. I live near Ottawa, Canada, with my husband, Howard, and a menagerie of pets. I learned yesterday of the death of Kevin Smith. It came as a great shock because Kevin was a healthy young man, a gifted actor known and loved by many fans world wide through his movie work and role of Ares in the tv series "Hercules" and "Xena".

From reading about Kevin on the Internet, I can see that there was even more to the man than I could surmise from his acting. He was a real family man and it pained him to be away from home, quite unlike his role as Ares. I didn't know that he had done work in stand-up comedy but I could definitely notice his comedic timing in "Hercules" and "Xena". I believe Kevin was on the brink of becoming a major international star, which makes it even more cruel to lose him; all that great potential lost. Most of all, I would like to offer condolences to Kevin's family and friends who knew him as his real self, an all-round lovely human being. God bless you, Kevin. We miss you very much.

- Viv and Howard Mansfield, Kemptville (near Ottawa), Canada

Only the good die young, but so sorry for your family.

- Sarah, Nelson

You were a genuine kiwi bloke, you will be missed

- Steve Gilmour

He was a stranger who touched all our hearts and seemed like a friend. He'll be missed.

- Nemetona

I write, but I really don't know what to say. Kevin has for so many years been a part of New Zealand culture. He will continue to be the embodiment of what Kiwi's love about home. I can only hope that his family are finding their own way to cope. My thoughts are with them.

- Lost kiwi

was shocked when I read an email saying that Kevin Smith was severely injured in a China hospital. I thought it couldn't be true! A short time later, when I had found a New Zealand newspaper online, the headline said he had already died. I couldn't imagine how such a handsome, greatly talented, sincere and honest man could be gone so quickly. In today's society, someone like Kevin who is so devoted to his family is rare.

I first saw Kevin in a Xena episode. He was playing Ares, of course. I hadn't watched Xena for like two years and he instantly captured my attention. It was the episode where Gabrielle was crossing over rivers inside a cave. After that, I became a devoted fan. I watched both "Xena" and "Hercules" every week just to see Kevin! I also saw every episode of Young Hercules, where he played Baccus as well as Ares. My heart goes out to his family at this sad time. I can only say I'm mourning him as I would my own family - even though I never met him. Kevin: I miss you. I hope you are at peace.

- Sarah Bourdelais, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA

I had been hoping that some day that I would have had the opportunity to meet Kevin. I work in a collectible shop, and when my employer was asked by the promoter for a Science Fiction Expo here in the Toronto area of Canada, what guest we would like to have there; for the past four years, Kevin Smith was on my list. I have had a crush on him since his first appearance. Knowing how much of a 'beefcake' that he was, and how he was a little embarrassed by the attention; there have been others that I have talked to who would have loved the same opportunity.

When I heard the news, I was in shock. I still am. Many people who I contacted did not hear about it until I told them. We would all like to express our deepest sympathy, and to let you know that our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fans around the world. We love you, Kevin, and will miss you dearly!

- Tina Lopez, Wyldstar Collectibles, Ontario, Canada

We will all miss Kevin Smith . All our prayer go to his wife and sons May the Lord give you the straigh to get through this time of grief.

- Barbara Edmisten, Weatherford Texas. USA

Wednesday, February 20

A bit of colour has gone from the NZ entertainment scene with Kevin's death; I loved his humour and those wicked eyebrows that always seemed to be saying, 'Who me?' My condolences to his family.

- Kath O'Shaughnessy

God Speed Kevin! You’re still the best!

- Anna

Shine on, bright star, shine on...

- Lesley, Canterbury

I wish that I could find the words to say, but that I'm so very sorry for Smith family. A man that will be missed but not forgot in the hearts of his family and friends and fans. A soul that will forever live in time! May you find peace! Fly away on the wings of love!

- Lisa (Honesty ), USA

May God bless the Smith Family in this time of sorrow.Kevin will be missed by his fans and are grateful for the performances that graced our lives. With deepest sympathy.

- Thomas Eich

I was deeply saddened to learn of Kevin Smith's passing. I loved his work on Xena and Hercules and was looking forward to seeing more from him. Most of us only touch a (relatively) small circle of people, but Kevin's family can be proud of the fact that there are many all over this small blue planet of ours who held Kevin in high regard. I have tears in my eyes from reading the other tributes.

I would count myself blessed if when I pass only one person would write kind words about me. Kevin was truly blessed because so many people have been moved to write about him. God has gained a great angel this year. Grant his family the strength to cope with his loss. We will all miss him.

- Laurine Emert, Pennsylvania, USA

I was greatly saddened to hear of the loss of a wonderful person. To Kevin’s wife and children you have my condolences. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Kevin was a truly talented actor. I came to love him as Ares on Xena. This was a show that was a great inspiration to my life. All those who were involved helped to create a magic for me. Kevin was very important in creating that magic. I will always have a place in my heart for the actor, man , husband, and friend.

- Melissa Olinger Mesa, Arizona

I wish to express my extreme sadness at the loss of Kevin Smith. He was an awesome actor, comedian and outstanding Kiwi. He will be greatly missed.

- Thompson family

We met him at a Xena con in NYC. I hadn’t wanted to go, but she said " Ares will be there!" So I said YES! He was funny, gracious and answered my question quite in depth. And he took the shouts of "please take your shirt off" from the peanut gallery all in stride.

When we got to the front of the line for autographs he called me mate and shook my hand.. He was very sweet, vibrant and full of life. He will be sorely missed.... and we can only imagine now what he might have done.

My deepest sympathies to his family and friends. This is a great tragedy and I cannot imagine how badly his family feels ... as I know how bad I feel. I will light him a candle and say him a prayer and we will see him in the next chapter of the book I am sure. as a soul with all that going for it cannot stay gone long for sure. Love and sympathy.

- Missy Kresse, NYC

There was a line said by Gabrielle from the Xena episode "Deju Vu": "Life is eternal. It has no beginning and no end. The loving friends we meet on journey return to us time after time. We never die, because we were never really born." Good-bye our Good Dark Knight, you'll be missed.

- Jenn , South Bend, Indiana

God bless his family. My heart and prayers go out to them.

- Lynn Coleman

I had the joy of meeting Kevin at one on the Xena Conventions in Pasadena CA. He was very kind and very outgoing, and I enjoyed talking to him. In fact it was the high point of my convention experience. I was shocked and sadden to hear of his recent accident and death. I would like to send my deepest sympathy to his wife and family. My prayers are with you at this time of great sorrow. Peace and love.

- Eva P. Loyd, Richardson, TX, USA

What a tragedy! How we all will miss him. May his family and friends receive some comfort in knowing that his shining star is in heaven now to shine down on the rest of us. With heartfelt sorrow

- a fan in Williamsburg, Virginia USA

When I first moved to New Zealand from Canada in 1988, my wife and I attended the local Theatresports where a young Kevin Smith was featured. He stole the show that night, was a dominant player and actor, and it was with great pleasure that I watched his career expand to the point he had reached before his untimely death. He was such a likeable character, and I am pleased he attained the success in his acting career that he so rightly deserved. To his family, I offer my humble prayers and thoughts.

- Doug Blackman, Vancouver, Canada

We would like to give our condolences to Kevin's family. This is a tragic waste of a young talented man who is loved and admired by so many. He is not just a loss to New Zealand but to his whole family who my heart goes out to at this sad and devastating time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Kia Kaha!

- The Tuitupou Family, Nelson

God! It's three days since Kevin died and I'm still not feeling the shock lessening any. I always thought he would 'be there' and it's so awful to contemplate the fact that he won't be any more. A tragic, tragic passing of one of NZ's finest. May his star shine ever bright. I send my deepest condolences to Kevin's family and friends. Thank you all so much for sharing him with us.

- K Takarangi, NZ.

Even smack dab in the middle of the U.S.A., Kevin Smith reached the hearts of his fans. I sit here in Kansas not believing what has happened and not knowing how to help. My heart and my prayers go out to Kevin's family and friends. If only I could turn back time for you all.

- Gwen Basham

Kevin, you were and still are very much loved by your fans across the world. It's very rare to find someone who had all your successes in life who still retains the down-to-earth nature that you seem to have. By all accounts you are a fantastic individual and the world is much poorer with your loss.

Sue, Oscar, Tyrone and Willard... I am so, so sorry for the loss of your husband and father. I was never fortunate enough to meet Kevin, but he was a terrific actor and everything pointed to him being just an absolute gem of a man. I'm sending positive thoughts your way.

- Nicola Woods Vancouver, Canada

At first I fought hard not to believe this is true. Even now it's just a shock. Through the tears my only thought at the time was... He's really gone. This loss in the Xenaverse felt like a family member has passed. Kevin was a sweet, sexy man with a heart of gold. He will be missed but never forgotten. Fans all around will come to the aid of his family, he meant that much. To his family, I don't have the words to take away your pain. If this helps in any way. You are far from alone. You are in the hearts, thoughts and prayers of thousands. God bless.

- Amy AKA

It is so painful, to loose a human, Especially a so precious person. But you are always in our thoughts. In our memory, you are living on. We thank God, that we had time to meet you. - Sabine, Germany

My thoughts are going to Kevins wife and tree boys, and his parents, they're gonna need a lot of support for the next time. I'm shocked about the loss of a great actor with a lot of humor, I wanted to see a lot more of him, but that luck isn't given to him. He will be GREATLY missed. Rest in peace Kevin, I never forget you.

My deepest sympathy to his wife, children and family. He touched many people. May your memories sustain you through these time.

- David Grandi, Thorndon, Wellington

I won't pretend to claim I was his biggest fan, but I thought he was one of the BEST things about "Xena" and "Hercules." I am sorry to hear of his passing and send my condolences to his family. Truly a sad loss...

- J Lee

Kevin Smith wasn't just a fine actor, he was a gentleman in the best sense of the word. He had the courage to succeed in another career after injury cut short his sports aspirations; he had the integrity to set his aim high and win critical approval through professional dedication and hard work. He never took himself too seriously, but at the same time he took his craft most seriously. He was a decent family man, and his natural optimism and good manners won the hearts of those privileged to meet him. Kevin Smith's body of work, and the manner of his life, will be his enduring and inspirational monument. I share in the grief that millions feel on hearing the news of his passing, and I wish to extend my prayers and deep condolences to his family.

- Patrick, California

"For I ...am a jealous God" , the Bible says. I guess he must be, to have deprived us of the talents of the most gorgeous man on the planet! To his wife and family- I grieve with thee. I had no interest in Hercules or Xena and missed the first few seasons, until channel surfing one day I happened to see HIM in 'Ten little warlords' at his scruffiest, mind you. Stopped me in my tracks. 'Who IS this? I want MORE! I watched those shows from then on, ONLY because of Kevin/Ares. How sad I am. I can imagine how much more he could have done. Another 10 years and he would have been bigger than Stallone and Arnold S. combined! He will be missed. Goodbye ARES.

- Neta Morefield, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Kevin Smith's occupation of entertaining me, the fan, was done way beyond my expectations. He will be sorely missed, even though I've never met him personally. I'm glad to have a picture in my head, of his warm and tender smile. I offer my condolences to his lovely family, and many friends. Peaceful journey to you Kevin.

- Melissa (Wisconsin, USA)

Your lopsided smile, witty reparte and handsome good looks will be sorely missed, Kevin. You will not be forgotten. Peace.

- SG, JS, et.al. - Wisconsin, USA

I want to express my sincere and heartfelt condolences to Kevin's family on his untimely passing. They are in our thoughts and prayers. How can you not miss such a charismatic and talented man? When I heard the news I was crushed. My wife and I are big fans of Xena and Hercules and we always looked forward to seeing Kevin as Ares, God of War. Although I've never met him, from all accounts he was a warm, friendly and wonderful human being. The life that he breathed into his TV characters. proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Kevin was truly in a league of his own. Kevin, we will always remember all those wonderful episodes you appeared in. You have left us with a priceless legacy and fond memories. We love you from the bottom of our hearts. Wherever you are my friend, rest well and remember a part of you will always be in our hearts.

- Nigel Ferdinands on behalf of all Kevin's fans in Malaysia

My prayers and condolences go to his family and friends. He was a wonder actor and a wonderful person who touched all our lives. We are all richer for having known him in one way or another. You will always be in my heart. Love you Kevin, goodbye friend.

- Marilyn , Toronto, Canada

I don't know exactly what to write. When I read Kevin's dead, it was like a blow in the head for me. And something inside me still doesn't want to believe it's true. Still hoping that he'll "beam in" in the god's way, laughing all around and shouting "Got you!"

- Molir, Czech Republic

To the family and many friends of Kevin Smith - I was stunned to learn of your loss, and so very, very sorry. I met Kevin and his wife Sue through a mutual friend many years ago. Kevin was an unbelievably well liked guy with a huge circle of friends. He was so down-to-earth as to render unsuspecting folk like myself to sudden shock, followed by just as instant tears of laughter. He will be remembered by much more than his acting career. I have children close in age to his, and my heart just goes out to them, their Mum and extended family, and to those many loyal friends who delighted in his company and many talents.

- Jody Hargreaves, Brisbane.

Big K, like your stature, you will be greatly missed, by your friends and community. Sue our prayers go out to you for stength and courage over the passing time. Sorry we could not be there with you. Love your friends.

- Fi and Fitz (NZ and London)

It is so sad that Kevin has passed. I am very sorry for the loss his family is enduring at this time. Kevin was a great actor and from everything I have ever heard about him he was a great human being as well. Kevin will be missed by many.

- Erica L. Collins

Like everyone who knew Kevin or just knew his work I was deeply shocked and saddened at the news of his death. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.I found this quote recently "Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we're here we should dance." Kevin knew how to dance.

- Caroline Wheeler, Hampshire, England

My husband and I travelled to NZ to see The Blue Room last May and Kevin was nice enough to come out and meet us after the show two nights in a row. We met him as fans and he treated us as friends. He was a kind generous man and his light will be missed. Thank you Kevin for the joy you brought to our lives both as an actor and a person. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and fans.

- Jennifer & Matt Kostalek, Island Lake Illinois

My heart goes out to the friends and family of the talented Kevin Smith. Hope you all are coping well and just remember that Kevin will be missed by so many people.

My name is Erica. I would like to express my deep sorrow to the family of Kevin Smith. He was a great actor and will greatly be missed. To the family my prayers are with you in your time of sadness. Although he has been taken away we must look at what he accomplished. He was a excellent actor, probably awesome husband and father, but most of all he was a good person who everyone admired and greatly respected. Once again I am very sorry for your loss, may he look down on those he touched with love.

- A loyal fan

What a tragedy for Kevin's family. For sure a loss to all of New Zealand. A great talent. We have enjoyed his TV performances and some of his live shows in Auckland. Most importantly though we need to think of his family. They have lost a soul mate and a Dad. Someone had a very special reason to take Kevin. All our love to his family.

- Mecara, Gisborne

My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Kevin Smith. New Zealand has become many Americans paradise to the south. We have appreciated your beauty and blessing though the images seen on Xena and Hercules and in features like Lord of the Rings, but Kevin Smith made your home human. He was our Ares, our funny singer and joker and sexy hero and villain. We are grieving for his children and promise to keep him in our memories as one of New Zealand’s best sons.

- Connie, Angleton, Texas

I admired Kevin in so many ways... and I never knew him personally. He had a wonderful way with words, and was a very sweet and loving person. I really wish I could've known Kevin as a friend. I always dreamed I did. He was sorta like my 'imaginary friend' since I could never meet him. I hope he's happy and at peace now.

- Ambrosia

Kevin you were such a warm hearted person. Who did achieve many goals in your life. unfortunately, there were many more to come, that we will never see. That is a tragedy in itself. Kevin, you were recognized in New Zealand. But believe me, everyone here in the States equally respected your talents. I will pray for your wife and sons. They lost a hero. And so did we!

- Robin Goodman

As a group of Kiwis living and working overseas in London, we are very much shocked and saddened with the news of Kevin Smith’s death. Such an amazing man and with so much talent and to see another well known KIWIS life cut short just makes you yet again ask WHY. As cabin crew with Air New Zealand based in London,we arrived at work to pick up the New Zealand Weekend Herald off the aircraft to read the news of his coma only to be told some 45 minutes later that he had passed away. This sent much shock and shivers done our spines. We send our much love and thoughts to all his family and friends.

- Air New Zealand Cabin Crew NZ 1 LHR/LAX

I have been a fan of Kevin Smith ever since I first saw him on Hercules. I am dumbfounded by his sudden death. The world has lost a wonderfully talented actor and we will miss him terribly! My condolences to his wife and children. My heart is with you!

- Melanie Young, Florida, USA

My heart goes out to Kevin’s wife and three sons. He will not only be missed by those who knew him personally, but by those of us who knew him through the wonderful characters he played on television. New Zealand has lost a brilliant talent. He was taken before his time. God Bless.

- Pat Meier, USA

My condolences to the family of Kevin Smith, I believe we have lost the most incredibly talented New Zealander that ever lived. We will miss you so much Kevin, lots of love always.

- Hilary Dromgool

The world will definitely shine less bright with the loss of this enormous talent - but that darkness will abate if we remember, often and fondly, his joie de vivre, his successes and what he stood for - and most importantly, let us remember and support his lovely wife and children of whom he was so proud, and they of him. Thank you for sharing your husband, father and son with us all.

- Karyn Fenton

Oh Goodness....!! I'm am a kiwi who has been living in Australia for going on two years now. I recently visited this site to catch up on the news back home and I am very shocked that Kevin has passed on. My condolences to family, friends, and associates. I recently read the tributes to Kevin on the website and I too will miss seeing such a fine actor at work. A truly gifted and talented performer was he. But like mentioned before, ".........just because I am out of sight, this is no need for me to be out of mine............." I'm am not sure how Kevin passed away, and would like to know more.

- Ally

Words simply are not enough to express my deepest regret to Mr. Smith’s family regarding his tragic, untimely passing. Two years ago, my husband and I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Smith and hearing him sing. His musical ability was as impressive as his acting. Even more impressive was his friendly demeanor, quick sense of humor, and his humble attitude. How refreshing to find a nice human being in an often arrogant, not-so-nice profession! What a truly gifted, talented person he was! We are grateful and blessed that Kevin was able to share his many gifts with us even though it was for too short a time. Our deepest condolences go to his family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time. God Bless You!

- Cheryl and Christopher Perry, Washington, D.C.,USA

Words cannot begin to express my deep sadness at the news of the passing of Kevin Smith. Whilst many have already poured out their tribute to him, my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to his family and pray that God may strengthen and comfort them at this awful time. We as fan may miss a hero, but you his family miss a father and partner. God be with you.

- Jo Berry, Scotland, UK

We are from Wales and were Hercules and Xena fans right fom the very beginning of both shows. We could see right away when Kevin made his first appearance that here was an actor of rare ability and charisma indeed. He could do it all; comedy drama, the action,he could sing up a storm and international stardom seemed to be his for the asking. We are pleased to say that we had the pleasure of meeting Kevin in the flesh at a convention in London 18 months ago and he did not disappoint. A rare human being has been lost here and we send our sincere condolences to his family. He shall be missed.

- Alan Mount & Alison Tucker

Kevin Smith was a great actor that made you interested in any character he did. He will be greatly missed but luckily we have his past movies and shows to continue to enjoy.

- Henry Rivera, New York, USA

With shock and deep sadness at the loss of Kevin Smith I extend my deepest sympathy to his family and friends. One could tell that Kevin enjoyed being an actor, he brought relish and a zest to his characterization of Ares on Xena Warrior Princess. His friendship with the other actors during filming was obvious to this viewer and the tributes paid to him by his fellow actors was a confirmation of my feelings. His bright star burned brightly on film and made him memorable. Now, his star will not be seen again, but will burn always in the hearts of his family, his friends and those who adored and appreciated his talent and gift. May God Bless his family.

- Leslie Burgess, California

It is devastating and sad that such a fine talent should reach his culmination so quickly. Kevin inspired many with his ability and will be sorely missed. My condolences to the ones who loved him and to his many fans, New Zealand has lost a bright star.

- Stacey Arnold, Book Manager COF Team, Whitcoulls Group Ltd

I have been reading the tributes on this page, and am amazed at the impact Kevin Smith's death has had on people all around the world, but I am not particularly surprised. Kevin Smith was a man of immense talent and charisma, and it seems unfair that he has been taken when the best was perhaps still to come. My heart goes out to his wife and children. Kia kaha, arohanui.

- Melissa Andrew

What can I say that has not already been said? I did not know Kevin and I only met him once, but he left an impression on me that I will never forget. A beautiful man inside and out. I send my love to his wife and sons.

- Kerry, U.K.

To Kevin’s family and close friends: My heart and thoughts are with you. He was an extremely talented man, and a true entertainer. Everything Kevin did, was a huge success. It’s a great waste, and to think that after all these years he was finally to break in Hollywood, our next Sam Neill or Russell Crowe. The saying "only the good die young" is so true of Kevin. He was beyond good he was great. He will be watching over you, and guiding and protecting you for the rest of your lives. Arohanui, God Bless, Love

- Annie

Kevin Smith was a multi-talented man. I will remember him best as Ares God of War. I always enjoyed watching him on Xena Warrior Princess. He had all the right stuff for a bright shining star. He was a very attractive sexy man. I am sure the God of War is with our God now. All my prayers are with his family and friends. God Bless

- Emily Strickland, USA

Words can never express the deep grief and sorrow at the news of his death. I had the extreme pleasure and privilege to meet him several times in the States and he never failed to amaze me with his ease, joy, graciousness, and completely wonderful dedication. It didn't matter who he was speaking with, they got his full attention. He never failed to make eye contact, to listen and to make you feel that you were important.

His body of work is awe inspiring. He could sing, do comedy and improv and move you to tears with his dramatic work. I'm stunned as so much of the world is that this could have happened. I said that of all the things I ever imagined saying about Kevin Smith in my lifetime, discussing his death was not one of them.

I know the grief will pass, but for his beautiful family, I offer whatever comfort can be gathered in the knowledge that he was one in a billion. A truly wonderful human being who lived by the maxim, do no harm. Bless you, Mr Smith. You crammed a lot into 38 years. May we never forget what a wonder you were!

- Linda Cook

I was most devastated by the news of Kevin's premature death. Kevin to me was a great person and friend. I remember when he used to come to the gym in the mornings He would always smile and say hello. Always had time for conversation. Kev, I will remember you as a great friend, always time for people, regardless of their gender, colour etc etc. Great example of a great person and great kiwi. God bless your soul. I hope you can continue your dream up in the stars.

- Mel Gounder

Our condolences to the family of Kevin Smith who we all enjoyed through his high profile acting career. It is a great loss. May he be treasured and remembered in the hearts of many. We hope and pray his wife and children may find comfort from his legacy. He will forever live on.

- The Green Family, Taranaki, New Zealand

I hope these tributes find their way to Kevin's family which will endorse what they already know - that the world has lost a great man. Having lost a close family member this year I know what Kevin's family are going through. A death never affects just the family - its casualties are spread far and wide. May we all take solace in the fact that he has left a fantastic legacy - he was an all-round good guy with an amazing talent. as a member of the human race he is irreplaceable.

- Sue Bull, Wellington

Now there was a man who could truly act and act well, comedy, drama, you name it. I enjoyed watching him woo Xena and he could sing too! He was on the verge of greatness and will be sorely missed. My heart, prayers, and thoughts go out to his family.

- Michele, Virginia, USA.

- Silvia Cartwright, Governor-General

My heart goes out to the family of this talented man.

- Ruth Dempsey, Rochester, NY, USA

I'm tired of this cruel world, yet another wonderful, least deserving genuine young man struck off this planet before his time. Why? Our loving thoughts and sympathies to his family. More a star now than ever! Sleep well.

- Leisa 38, Kirsten 16, Ben 9, and Lydia aged 3 years, Saxton, nee Burley.

Having gotten to know Kevin Smith through Xena, and as Ares, I had slowly become entranced by him,and admired his acting ability. Having lost a husband myself it’s with personal grief that I understand what his wife is going through. May she find solace in his children as I have in mine, know that his life will shine through them.

- Maria, Georgia, USA

A sad end to a glorious man. I will never be able to view a tape of Xena without a tear in my heart for you. You were truly superb as Ares, God of War and we will never forget you. Rest in Peace.

- Louisa

I was shocked and saddened when I heard the news of Kevin Smith. I met him once at a convention in Detroit MI.,he was so down to earth and so kind to everyone. Iam so proud that I got to meet him, I will never forget it. I think he was not just an actor but a very special person. He made people so comfortable when they where around him. My heart goes out to his family and friends. God gave us a very special person and decided to call him back, we must remember the kindness he showed. We will miss you Kevin!!!

- Shirley Gray, Wellington

Sorry to see the loss of one of the good guys. Man you made me laugh and feel good when I watched your shows. Rest in peace Bro.

- Ben

I was astonished to learn the awful truth of the tragic end to such a beautiful person. He made us laugh and cry, and he made us cringe and sigh. But this angel that pretended to be evil will find a lasting place in God's kingdom. My heart and prayers go out to his loved ones.

- Temi Bruno, USA

What a sad loss over one of our awesome Kiwi Kevin Smith. I pray God is with Kevin's wife and boys and is giving them the comfort they need in such a tragic time like this as Kevin was a young husband and father, and great person to many. So I pass on my condolences to all family and friends. We will all greatly miss him.

- Natasha, Wellington

My love and sympathy go out to Kevin's family. I can only imagine the shock his family must be experiencing. My shock is great and I only knew Kevin from his work in television, films and from the conventions I was privileged to attend.

The measure of a man is not only counted in his deeds, but in those he has touched and changed even in a small way during his life. Kevin's influence has moulded so many. His example of love for his family and his dedication to his chosen profession, his smiling personality and good will have made us all better people. He is sorely missed by us all.

- Donna, Rancho Cordova, CA

I'll miss Kevin's cheery disposition and his wonderful friendliness. When I moved to NZ from the states, I looked forward to finally meeting Kevin Smith after seeing him in Xena and Hercules. I was fortunate enough to see him in A Streetcar Named Desire, watched him play rugby for charity and met him at a charity shopping event. He did everything with such gusto for life. It really hasn't sunk in that all that life is gone.

One very vivid memory I had was at a charity shopping event at Westfield Shopping mall. Kevin spent a long time talking to a couple of developmentally challenged young men. He was very patient with them and so friendly. Then he talked with a young girl, kneeling down to get to her height and offered an autograph when she was too tongue tied to do anything more than hand him a piece of paper. He was so friendly to everyone.

The only comfort I have is to know that he's in a better place and that he'll never really die as long as there is someone left to remember him.

- Sandy Hall

Only a few small lines appeared in one Sydney's Sunday newspapers, telling of the sad passing of Kevin Smith in China. The item shocked me greatly, been an avid fan of the New Zealand actor for some time. To think the accident happened two weeks prior to the announcement of his death. I have had to go on the Internet to view New Zealand newspaper reports to learn what information was available.

His role in Xena Warrior Princess was hugely popular here in Australia as well as overseas as were his movies, most Australians have great respect for the work of the New Zealand film industry. It is so sad that such a talented and remarkable man should be taken so early in his life, my thoughts and deepest sympathy go the young family he has left behind.

- Keith Ison, Sydney, Australia

A sad loss, for some many people - his family, his fans, the world and drama and indeed all of New Zealand. Kevin Smith's charisma had me years ago. Crikey, the man had presence, a quality sorely lacking in so many others onscreen. This really is a tragedy, something we have great cause to regret.

- Andre Hansen

I just wanted to let Kevin’s family know how sorry I was to hear of their loss. There is really no words that can express the loss of a loved one, only the knowledge that he is in a better place and made a lot of people happy. Just remember that in the days to come and know that he touched the lives of many. May God bless and protect you in the days to come.

- Deana Schafer, Cullman Al, USA.

May the Lord keep Kevin Smith family strong in this time of grief. Take the time to remember Kevin the man and the actor the way he lived his life to the fullness. We the fans will all miss you.

- Barbara Edmisten, U.S.A

Before attempting to put across just a fraction of the emotions that have overwhelmed me over the past weekend I decided to read what other fans have written so far. It made me realise how careful one has to be in putting one's feelings in writing. Naturally my first thoughts were and are with Kevin's friends and especially his family. I am lucky enough to have met Kevin in London in 2000. I only really became a fan of his after that meeting. I had always noticed what a good actor he was but somehow it never before registered. His personality was the element of his being that I found so wonderfully surprising that he gained another fan from then on. My deepest condolences and sympathies to all whose life he has touched, he leaves an awfully big gap.

- Emmy Muller, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

I would like to extend my most heartfelt condolences to the family of Kevin Smith. His passing has left a vast emptiness in their lives. There is no more terrible grief for a parent than burying a child, and his wife has lost the love of her life, his sons their much loved dad.

It is very rare that I become interested in an actor - they're a dime a dozen, and for the most part flavors of the month, but Kevin was different. His striking good looks and powerful physique attracted my attention, and his talent and humor kept it from straying. He was the main reason I watched the Hercules and Xena shows. From what I have heard he was a lovely and kind-hearted man, his head could still fit a hat and family came first.

I could see so much ahead for him. There is no doubt in my mind that he would have made it big in Hollywood. I was looking forward to seeing much of him, but sadly it wasn't to be. Bless you Kevin. Have a good trip.

- Maureen, Toronto, Canada

Here in the US we have received very little information about Kevin's death - only a little blip on the national radar here, I'm sad to say. But he meant a lot to many people here, and this incident has been much the subject of discussion on smaller and more personal levels. I am shocked and very saddened at the news, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this awful time. He was a beautiful man in many ways and he will be sorely missed.

- Lisa Wolfe

Well it is sad to lose someone so talented and wonderful - ok and sexy too - but must be harder for those who had the privilege to know and love you. You were someone my children could look up to - but now they still can - good luck up there and wow them there too.

- The McRae/Cathro family, Christchurch

Family love is something no one can explain,

it's made of deep devotion, sacrifice and pain,

But death is sent to show

We love more deeply than we know,

So love and death should make us see,

What love and life is meant to be.

We all are going to miss you Kevin. To your wife and family peace be with you.

- Leigh

Shocked to hear the terrible news about the death of Kevin. He will be missed on the TV screens of NZ

- Jane, Napier

I always made sure to watch "Xena" when Kevin was on. Ares was one of my favorite characters, whether he was playing for comedy or drama. It was so shocking to hear the news. I think, like a lot of other people, the fact that Kevin played an Immortal, made it even more unbelievable. And moreover, it seemed so unfair, especially when he was embarking on a new stage in his acting career. My prayers go out to Kevin's wife and childen, for as upset as we the fans are, I can't imagine what they must be going through. And thanks to Kevin for such wonderful memories!

I cannot begin to express my horror and sadness at the news of Kevin Smith's untimely death. To his family and friends, to the cast and crew of Xena and Hercules, who were so lucky to have worked with him, to all New Zealanders, and to his many, many fans around the world, I offer my deepest sympathies and condolences. What a tragic, unbelievable loss - this beautiful, vibrant, talented, funny man taken from us so abruptly.

I had the honor of meeting Kevin at a Xenacon in New York several years ago, and his kindness, humor and self-effacing grace were evident to everyone in the room. He will be missed by us all, and the enjoyment and pleasure I received from watching him so often striding across my TV screen as Ares, the multi-faceted God of War, will forever be diminished by his passing. God bless you, Kevin, and keep you, until one day you are joined by your beloved family and friends in Heaven. You were such a winner.

- Lisa Ramaci, New York City

I wish to pay my respects and deepest sympathy to Kevin's wife, children and many friends he's left behind. A shock to all - a man who will never be forgotten - his sense of humour is how I best remember him. I acted alongside him in the Watershed Theatre's production of Othello. Will be greatly missed.

- Rachale A Davies, London

When my father died last year a dear friend of the family told me she believed it really is the good, the best, who die young. I believe it too, and can't imagine what Kevin Smith's family is going through or how they are managing to get through each day. I just hope the depth of support and feeling for his wife, children and family will in some way lift their spirits.

- Wendy Valois, Sydney, Australia

I send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Kevin T. Smith. When I heard that he had been hurt my family and I prayed for him. He was my favorite New Zealand Actor and I was a huge fan of his character on Xena: Warrior Princess. My thoughts and prayers go out to his parents, wife, and especially his little boys. God be with you and bless you!

Most of us fans in the States got to know Kevin Smith through his work on "Hercules" and "Xena", but what was so lovely about the man was his range - all the way from "Othello" to "The Wide Lapels". He seemed to have an immense, joyful appetite for life, and it is heartbreaking that he should have been cut off so untimely. My prayers and condolences go to his family and friends.

I am shocked and saddened by the sudden loss of such a talented actor and all round nice guy, Kevin Smith. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his wife and children. He is my favourite New Zealand Actor/celebrity and I shall miss seeing his talent, his charming good looks and this genuinely good natured person, in movies, TV, shows and believes he would have put it all into his movie career and succeeded but still being a down to earth person and not letting fame go to his head. Although he has deserved it. Our prayers are with his family. Best wishes you all. Avid fan, Rest In Peace Kevin.

Undoubtedly one of New Zealand's most gorgeous and talented star. Our deepest sympathy to the family.

I would just like to pay my respect to your family and pray that you keep strong, and have the love and support of one another to get through this hard time. I understand how you will be feeling at the moment as I have just lost my grandfather who passed away on Wednesday evening. Remember that he will always love you and your family, let your family celebrate the life that he had with you and the time you shared together. Thinking of you and your family.

It was on stage that Kevin Smith gave all of us, that had the opportunity to see him perform, an insight into the soul of a talented performer. To perform successfully on stage, on film and on television as Kevin did requires the ability to share a huge part of yourself with others. Kevin was a special performer and a special thank you goes to his family for sharing him with the rest of us. Our thoughts are with you in your time of sorrow. Arohanui.

My heartfelt condolences goes out to Kevin Smith's family, friends, colleagues, and fans. I've never met him. He seemed the type of person who shared my motto about life: If I can make you feel good, laugh and/or smile, even if it's just for a little while, I've done what The Maker was intending. He will be missed; however, it's how one makes you feel while they're here that's important. It's the only true legacy you can leave. For the fans, like myself, who'd watched Xena & Hercules here in the US and around the world, you made us feel good, laugh, and smile. As we watch the re-runs & videos, we'll continue doing so. Your talent & warmth will always be remembered. Thank you Kevin!

If death can claim the life of the wonderful Kevin Smith, it can claim anyone! He was the one guy many deemed immortal!

I remember Kevin Smith speaking with such pride about New Zealand...and now I realize, he was the pride of New Zealand. He was a fabulous ambassador for your beautiful nation. My heart goes out to his family, his friends, and his countrymen.

I am deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Kevin. My condolences to Sue whom I met years ago, the rest of his family, Geoff one of his best mates and our mutual agent Robert Bruce. I used to play professional theatresports in Christchurch every Sunday in the early days with Kevin. We were on the wining teams. Kevin was one of the greatest talents and charismatic characters and one of the warmest people one could meet as well.

He richly deserved every success and the many more that were to come on the world stage. I remember vividly the laughter, the tears, the magic we created on stage and the awe at which I looked at you...such confidence, such looks, such flair! I know wherever you are Kevin your light will be shining brightly and with it gentleness, laughter, inspiration, tears and spirit. May you rest in peace and your light continue to shine. God bless and God Bless NZ.

How can an actor pass on that way without fulfilling his career? New Zealand people are shocked and shaken by a man who has inspired lives here in New Zealand, an up and coming icon for the world to see. Kia kaha goes out to the Smith Whanau, His sons will carry on his fame, his charisma, his spunk, his talent. Our nation is in mourning. It feels like the day stood still when Princess Diane passed on.

- Minigurl, ChristChurch, New Zealand

It was a true shock to hear of Kevin Smith's death. The first time I saw him on Xena, I knew that he WAS Aries. He played him admirably, evolving him into a most complex and intriguing character. Unfortunately I don't know much about the man himself, only that he was a very talented actor. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

There really aren't the words to convey my sorrow at the loss of Kevin Smith, and my hearbreak for his wife Sue, three young sons and their family and close friends. I'm just a fan, really, but while I first paid attention to Kevin through his character of Ares, I soon grew to admire his immense all-round talent and then I grew to love the Kevin that I saw over the years and the Kevin that I had the great good fortune to meet in passing at conventions overseas. He was a gentle, patient, kind, loving, compassionate, funny, enormously talented and highly intelligent man, and New Zealand and the world is lessened and darker for his passing. Rest in peace, Kevin, and know your family and those you love are surrounded and lifted up by the love and prayers of many.

I'm devastated at the death of Kevin Smith. Kevin was one of the greatest all round actors this country has ever produced. He was also one of the nicest and most down to earth actors I've ever had the pleasure of meeting both here and overseas. My prayers are with his family.

- David Hartnell

It's a sad, sad day to hear of Kevin Smith's passing. I would love for his family to know that he already had captured the USA market and our hearts. We too shall miss his warms smile and witty cants. We hold his family in our prayers.

I like reading your paper online and thank you for the article about Kevin Smith's death. He was a wonderful actor and will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and young sons, his parents and New Zealanders that knew him. He played a God, and now he is with God. A wonderful man who will be greatly missed by a fan in the United States.

I am very saddened by the news of Kevin Smith's death. Not only was he stunningly handsome and very charming, but he was indeed a gifted actor. My heart goes out to his family and friends. This grateful admirer from Puerto Rico grieves him. He will always hold a place in my heart. May he rest in peace.

- Berta Martinez

I read with great sadness about Kevin Smith's death. I want his family to know that the whole of NZ is thinking of them. He will be terribly missed.

- Jackie

As a BIG Kevin Smith fan,the news of his death is hard. Really hard. I can imagine how his family and friends are dealing with this. This is the first time somebody has died that I cared deeply about. I have a suggestion. I think somebody should write a book about Kevin Smith. A book is a good way to let fans remember him. And to let people that didn't know him, get a chance to know him because when Kevin was on the screen wether it was Xena or Hercules he.....he just made the show even more interesting.

- Britnee

I grew up in the Hollywood Capital of the world (the San Fernando Valley, of California), I've met many an actor, yet I am jealous of you wonderful Kiwis that you had Kevin Smith all to yourselves, he was a wonderful person, and will be remembered fondly.

- Julie Cashmon

Kevin can't be dead. Kevin is my world. His sexuality and charisma helped me get off my arse and get fit. I'm looking forward to his star to rise high and shine. Love You Kevin, get better! Love, Love, Love!

- Leslie Rockwell, Medford, Oregon, USA

I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of actor, Kevin Smith. He will be remembered as a very talented entertainer as a powerful portrayer of 'Ares God of War' on Xena: Warrior Princes. May he find peace in God's eternal kingdom.

- Maria (from Canada)

Our sympathy to Suzanne and the children and to the whole Smith Family.

This is part of excerpt by Canon Scott Henry Holland 1867-1918 that was sent to me.

"Death is nothing at all, I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I and you are you, whatever we were to each other that we are still.

“Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was, let it be spoken without an effort, without the trace of a shadow in it.

“Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner. All is well."

- Maryanne and Gary

I can’t believe actor Kevin Smith has passed! It’s a tragedy for nz and for people of Timaru that took great pride in Kevin as a fellow Timaruvian!

- Megan Cameron

I feel gutted that such a beautiful and talented man can't further develop to his full potential. His personal life was kept private and he didn't make headlines on the strength of social antics. The pending Hollywood movie would have made it for Kevin universally; but to us Kiwis, we knew, we saw and we felt him. Even though I never meet him in person, I can imagine the pain and grief of those that knew him as a son, husband, father, sibling, friend, colleague is indescribable. I will miss seeing Kevin grow old and it will hurt when I see him on television...such a beautiful and talented man.

- Rhonda MacLeod

I would just like to pass my condolences to the Smith family in their hour of need. Anyone who was a Xena fan would remember Kevin as a regular to the show, his character an evil god, a thorn in Xena's side for many an episode. To lose a experienced actor such as Smith will be felt by many of his peers as well as his fans. To pass away when he was on the verge of a breakthrough to his career is a very cruel twist.
