Dear Faculty, Staff, and Friends of COAS,

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Friends of COAS,This is the COAS Dean’s Weekly Update for May 6, 2020, a quick and incomplete list of the great things that are happening in COAS.Spring Semester Ends Successfully: Grades were due yesterday. Wow! What a semester that was! I have been teaching since 1984 and I have never seen a semester like it. I would like to thank you for all the work that you did to bring this historic semester to a successful close. You all put in extra hours under stressful conditions doing new tasks. The Dean’s Office has still received only one complaint. This shows that you did a great job!COAS Shines at Virtual Graduation: I hope that you had a moment to look at the UNF Graduation Page and see all the amazing work that COAS faculty and staff did to honor our Spring 2020 graduates. Looking forward to this week’s update, I asked the chairs to send me a list of the faculty and staff who took a leadership role in pulling together these celebrations. I was going to include the combined lists in this update. Then I saw what the chairs sent me. So many of you contributed to this effort! Too many list here. To all of you who contributed, I want you to know that I appreciate all the work you did (at a busy time of year) to pull together such a great collection of materials. I would also like to thank Colin McKinney, Kat Thompson, and the UNF Marketing and Communications team. They worked like crazy until the very last minute to get our materials posted. COAS Development Tops $2 Million: In the month of April, an important milestone was reached. Gifts and contracts to support COAS’s FY20 development priorities exceeded $2 million. Gifts for the year are over $1,725,000. In addition, the efforts of Anne-Marie Campbell secured a $300,000 contract from Johnson and Johnson Vision Care to support the acquisition of a new Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometer. The coronavirus and its effects on family finances make this a challenging time to raise funds. Nevertheless, we are working hard toward our FY20 goal of $2,342,700. Between now and June 30, development efforts are focused on securing an additional $200,000 in immediate-use scholarship funds to support COAS undergraduates. Because of the virus, our students need these scholarships more than ever. I am inspired by the generous community of donors who have and continue to support the College. With the spring semester behind us, I hope that, in spite of these difficult times, you can get some well-deserved rest. Of course, the summer term will be here before we know it, but it is important to take some time to pause and recharge our batteries. Our first response to the coronavirus felt like a sprint to get to the end of the spring semester. As I look ahead, I see us transitioning to a marathon. We need to pace ourselves accordingly. Thank you so much for all that you did to make UNF’s conversion to remote instruction a success!Yours in peace,George RainboltGeorge W.
