Circulating Books, Electronic Books, and U.S. Government Documents

Use the following steps to find books, e-books, and U.S. government online documents on wide-ranging topics:

✓ Go to the Kean University Library’s home page located at .

✓ Click Books, E-books, Videos, & More to access the Kean Catalog.

✓ Type your key words in the search box underneath the words Find This:

✓ Click Search.

✓ Make note of the Library Location designation for any titles of interest. You may see the following Library Location options in your search results:

➢ Main Collection -- The book is a circulating title and may be checked out. Make note of the call number and status for any Main Collection titles of interest. Books from the Main Collection are shelved by Call Number on the second and third floors of the Kean University Library.

➢ Reference Collection -- The book does not circulate and must be used in the Library. Reference books are shelved either in the Reference Collection on the first floor or in the Reference Annex on the second floor.

➢ Electronic Resource – The title is available as an e-book and may be accessed online by clicking the title, then clicking the hyperlink next to the words Linked Resource. In many cases, you will need to type your Library Barcode number as a password in order to access the e-book text.

➢ U.S. Government Online Document – The document is available online by clicking the title, then clicking the hyperlink next to the words Linked Resource.

Reference Books

Listed below are select reference titles provided for quick look-up by call number in the Reference Collection (located on the first floor of the Library) or in the Reference Collection Annex (located on the second floor of the Library). The first column displays the reference call number. The second column displays the corresponding title.

Research Databases

The Library databases listed below may provide information useful for argumentative essays or persuasive speeches.

Note: When you are off-campus, you will need to log in with your Kean Google username and password after you click on a database name.

Issues and Controversies To search Issues and Controversies for wide-ranging information (including arguments from supporters and opponents) on current controversial topics:

✓ Start at the Library’s home page ().

✓ Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.

✓ Click the letter I on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click Issues and Controversies ().

✓ Type your key words in the search box, then click the search button.

✓ Alternatively, explore the Recent Controversies or Issues by Subject sections.

✓ Result: Retrieved article titles will be displayed. Click a title to view the full-text article.

✓ E-mail the article you are viewing by clicking Page Tools at the top right corner of the article, then click Share to access the e-mail form.

Points of View To search Points of View Reference Center for wide-ranging information on

Reference Center current-event topics:

✓ Start at the Library’s home page ().

✓ Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.

✓ Click the letter P on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click Points of View Reference Center (EBSCOhost / JerseyClicks).

✓ Access Point and Counterpoint information representing opposing perspectives on current issues by clicking a topic listed in either the In the News or Browse by Category sections.

Please note: Using the search box to search for your key words will retrieve articles on your topic but not necessarily articles including Point and Counterpoint perspectives.

✓ While viewing the full text for an overview article obtained through either In the News or Browse by Category, look for the box labeled Related Items provided along the right-hand side of the full-text article.

✓ Click to access the full-text Point and Counterpoint articles listed in the Related Items box.

✓ E-mail the overview article you are viewing by clicking E-mail at the top of your screen.

Please note: The text for the Point and Counterpoint articles will not be included with the emailed full-text overview article, nor can the Point and Counterpoint articles be emailed separately. However, you may click the link for Persistent link to this record (Permalink) that appears within the email message. This will take you back to the screen where you may access the Point and Counterpoint articles. In addition, you may copy and paste the Point and Counterpoint text into a Word document that you either save or email as an attachment.

CQ Researcher To search CQ Researcher for reports on current topics that feature “pro/con”

perspectives:

✓ Start at the Library’s home page ().

✓ Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.

✓ Click the letter C on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click CQ Researcher (CQ Press/Congressional Quarterly).

✓ Move your cursor over the Browse Reports menu, then select Pro/Con.

✓ Click a topic from the Browse Pro/Con Sections by Topic list, then click a topic from the Pro/Con Question list to access a report.

✓ E-mail the report you are currently viewing by clicking E-mail a link back to…, then selecting Full Report from the drop-down menu and filling out the e-mail form.
