Task: Your job is to create a magazine covering aspects of ...

Magazines were a staple of communication and culture in the 1950s. Because TV was relatively new, the print media was the main way that most people kept track of trends and world events. The variety of magazines in the 1950s was astounding and covered topics ranging from fashion to hot rod cars.

Task:

Your job is to create a magazine covering aspects of culture, politics, arts, music, lifestyles and such from the 1950s. You will create this magazine in a group of 4 or 5. Your magazine will be published in the classroom and should be reflective of the 1950s as much as possible. In the course of your project, you will mimic a magazine’s content and style, making a 1950s edition that is reflective of that magazine’s format.

This project will have a variety of different assignments, each with their own individual due dates – and, of course, the final magazine product.

Magazine Requirements:

You will choose a magazine format that you will imitate. After analyzing the current magazine's format and describing the relevant style and content of the magazine's creators and identifying the typical reader, you will create a magazine that mimics that format. Some of our current magazines did not exist in the 1950s, but that is not a problem. We are more concerned with their format.

Some possible options - (remember, we are looking at format, not content):

|Time |Forbes |

|Life |McCall’s |

|Newsweek |Fortune |

|Entertainment Weekly |Vanity Fair |

|People |Rolling Stone |

|Vogue |Harpers |

| |Ladies Home Journal |

Project is worth 75 points in total:

• 25 points for your feature article

• 20 points for each of your supplementary pieces (40 total)

• 10 points for overall magazine grade

Your group will create a magazine with the following components following the format of your chosen magazine:

1. Cover Page:

a. Lead story, picture, title of magazine, editor/contributors, and date. (in the 50s!)

2. Table of Contents (created last)

3. Four or Five (depending on # of people in group) feature news articles.

a. The articles must be written as if they could be in your model magazine during the 1950s. (Ex. An article on a famous 1950s Rock Star (Elvis) in your 1950s Rolling Stone Magazine)

b. They can be about any significant event, trend, or development during the 1950s.

c. Each person in the group is responsible for one feature article.

d. Articles should be typed in column format with 1-inch margins all around.

e. There should be no large expanses of blank paper – wrap the text around pictures or graphics, maps, etc. You know, like in a magazine!

f. Your articles must correspond to the date of your magazine and have some perspective of time. For instance, if your magazine is written in 1955, you cannot write about Sputnik from 1957. You have some flexibility here. It is possible to do a retrospective of the 1950s.

4. Bibliography – each article must have a properly formatted bibliography at the end of your article. For each article, you must use at least 3 sources of information – and wikipedia cannot count as one.

5. Supplementary Pieces: Each person is responsible for creating two of the following pieces and there should be no more than two of each type (unless there are five in a group).

a. Graphic Map (map, chart, etc. with contextual explanation of at least 150 words)

b. 2 Advertisements (by private organizations or the government)

i. You may copy images but you must create the text yourself.

ii. The ads must suit the audience of the magazine and be a popular product of the era.

c. Letter to the Editor – on a current (1950s) controversial issue

d. Political Cartoon (must be created, not copied)

6. Grading Guideline (Rubric)
