Jill Tanner & Credit Ta Fame Snatch Up

San Angelo Title, Rodeo Houston Entry

By Tanya Randall

For someone who doesn't like to be gone from home much, Jill

Tanner has a huge opportunity ahead of her.

As the 2019 San Angelo Barrel Racing Champion, Tanner jumped

into the WPRA Top 15 and won a bye into Rodeo Houston, a boon

for any competitor hoping to make the Wrangler National Finals

Rodeo on a limited schedule.

"It seems surreal to me," said Tanner, who attended Rodeo

Houston once with her husband, NFR team roper Jimmy Tanner.

"I remember thinking, `I wish I could run at Houston,' but it was

never something I thought was actually going to happen. Rodeo

Houston is for the best of the best, and I don't consider myself one

of those. It's crazy!"

Tanner decided to enter a handful of rodeos this winter. The first

of which was the Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo in Odessa.

"I'm really bad about turning out," admitted the Stephenville, Texas, resident. "If it's something with my

In San Angelo, Tanner and her horse Credit Ta Fame ("Saturday") got off to a great start in the progressive round, held during slack on January 23 in the First Community Credit Union Spur Arena. They finished second with a 15.97 behind the 15.91 of Wenda Johnson and Dreams First Flash (First Moonflash x First Down Dream x First Down Dash). The entire top 10 was separated by less than 2/10ths of a second.

Tanner and Saturday finished out of the money in the second round, which was held in the Foster Communications Coliseum during the performances, February 1-14. Nicole Love and JL Josie Bar (JL Dash Ta Heaven x Bucks Josie Bar x Mr Docs Dakota) topped the second round with a 14.08.

"He laid down a run in the first round," she recalled. "I thought, `Okay, here were go,' and then in the second round, we weren't very fast. I have a tendency to hold my horses up because I'm not a very brave barrel racer!"

Wrangler BFI Week announces 2019 changes

Organizers revamp #11 with lower fees, add #9 Over-40 and change All-Girl format.

When Perry Di Loretto founded the world's first million-dollar #11 roping in Reno, Nevada, in 1996, it kicked off a legacy of giving back to the host community. Corky Ullman and Daren Peterson, who bought the roping in 2015, are keeping to tradition. Over the past few years, organizers have auctioned valuable items to raise more than $30,000 for Warriors and Rodeo and $15,000 for the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. A local charity will benefit in 2019 ? Pinocchio's Moms on the Run. The Reno non-profit provides financial assistance to breast cancer patients undergoing treatment in this part of Nevada.

"It's important to give back, and ever since Perry created it, the #11 roping has given back to Reno," said Peterson. "Just like the BFI, which raises money for the Reno Rodeo Foundation, Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund, and Warriors and Rodeo, we're excited to see this roping support Moms on the Run, a great local charity for Reno women."

This year, the 23rd edition of the roping on June 25 sports a new moniker ? the Wrangler National Patriot. It's named for the 10-yearold program backed by Wrangler that raises funds for American military veterans and their families while encouraging all Americans to rally with patriotism.

Complying with the nationwide tweak in roper handicaps, the roping is technically an 11.5 roping this year, but keeps the invitational format, #6 cap and requirement that entrants be at least 30 years old (the average age of 2018 contestants was 54). Fees have been lowered to $2,000, and organizers who spread the money more evenly last year have gone back to guaranteeing $200,000 for first place. Entries are open now for it and all other events of Wrangler BFI Week, June 22-29.

The event actually kicks off this year on Saturday, June 22, with the Hooey BFI Junior Championships, moved in 2019 so as not to conflict with the National Junior High School Finals Rodeo or the Best of the Best Timed-Event Rodeo. Last year, the Hooey BFI Junior Championships winners earned $15,000.

And of course, everything is anchored by the 42nd Annual BFI on Monday, June 24, which features 108 of the world's best Open teams competing over six rounds for more than $700,000 in cash

and prizes. The Wrangler National Patriot #11.5 follows on Tuesday. A brand-new roping is scheduled for Wednesday, June 26, this year ? the Cactus #9.5 Over 40 that will pay $100,000 for first place (based on 125 teams).

"The #9.5 is a great addition to our roster," said Peterson. "It allows the older ropers a chance to compete against their peers in a format where they don't have to rope against the kids." Also Wednesday, #12 ropers over 21 will play in the High Desert Showdown. And in 2019, the Charlie 1 Horse All-Girl Challenge on Thursday will again be the highest-paying women's roping in America. It boasts a new pick-one/draw-one-for-$750 format, and also offers $7,500 guaranteed to the winners of a #9 Incentive within the roping. The breakaway jackpot returns, along with the $2,500 bonus for the All-Girl all-around champion.

This year's local BFI Week activities will be especially exciting as they happen in conjunction with the storied Reno Rodeo's 100th anniversary celebration. Together the two events, plus World Series competitions off-site, bring the collective athlete purse in Reno to roughly $3.75 million.

Visit for more information. Reservations with special roper rates starting at $54 are available at the Silver Legacy Resort, Eldorado Resort, and Circus Circus Reno by using rate code BFI19.

Jake and Jim Ross Cooper became the first twins to qualify for the NFR in the team roping and her dad Jimmie Cooper is the 1981 All Around World Champion and a Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer--Tanner said she probably ran barrels just about a handful of times before she turned 20.

"My background is not in barrel racing," she said. "I had only roped growing up. It's been a rough transition. I tend to be always up (in roping position) and I have to tell myself all the time `Sit down, Jill!'"

Tanner and Saturday had the fourth fast time on two runs going into the short round on Friday, February 15. In the alleyway, Tanner did something out of character that dramatically changed her fortunes.

"My plan was to let him go and pick his speed," she said. "Then in the alleyway he wasn't feeling a hyped up as he normally does, so I kicked him! He took off! I just thought, `Oh no! Hold on!' That's all I really remember about that run--kicking in the alleyway and holding on!"

They ended up posting the fastest time of the rodeo, a 13.81, to win the short and lock up the average for a $13,304 payday.

"It felt like he was going fast," she said. "You can't really hear in the back, so I was thinking I had placed. I don't think I've ever gone that fast on him!"

Saturday was bred and trained by Caryn Henry of DeLeon Springs, Florida. The 10-year-old gelding is by Flyin Ta Fame, a son of all-time leading barrel horse sire Dash Ta Fame out of a Strawfly Special mare. He is the first living foal out of Henry's tough Cash Not Credit, Nonstop Jet mare Quick Moon Credit.

Tanner learned of the gelding from her longtime friend Ally (Hayes) Lyshon, who had seen him run with Henry.

"I never would have had him without Ally telling me about him," said Tanner. "I had just broke my ankle a couple of weeks before when a horse I was trying fell with me. I didn't know how I was going to try him with a broke ankle and a (walking) boot on my foot."

Tanner said she "cruised through the barrels, nice and easy," which probably amounted to a "slow lope" to most people, but she fell in love with the gelding and bought him in fall of his fifth year.

"I've just ran him off and on since I got him," she said. "I've never been (down the road) a whole year on him. I got him in November and I won the Sherrylynn Johnson on him in December. I made the Southeastern Circuit Finals one year on him. Then I got pregnant and I sent him back to Caryn."

Henry won the 2016 NBHA Finals Open 1D Championship on Saturday before he went back to Tanner, after the birth of her daughter in January of 2017.

Although she rodeoed a little after her daughter was born, Tanner's focus remained on her now 2-year-old and her two Southern Honey boutiques, one in Stephenville, Texas, and in Hobbs, New Mexico.

"I actually priced him to a friend in the spring of last year," she

admitted. "I had mixed emotions about it. I felt like he was my onein-a-million horse, but I didn't want him sitting. When they passed on him, I told Jimmy it had to be a God thing. There's a reason God wanted him out in my pasture eating grass."

Tanner said she still plans on taking things one day at a time. "I'm still on the stay-home plan," she laughed. "We just sold our rig two weeks ago. Georgia's not a good traveler and I have the two stores. I think I'll get into Austin, and I like that rodeo. I've planned on Corpus (Christi) and Lufkin, but I don't know beyond that." Tanner wanted to thank Henry for raising and training Saturday and for choosing her to buy him; Lyshon for telling her about him; her husband and parents for their support and her boutique staff, especially her right-hand woman Becky Berger, who not only helps with the store, but Georgia and the horses as well.
