LORAINE, Samuel (former L.C.V.I. Teacher) Died peacefully after a long illness in Kingston. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1923, son of Marie Winnifred and Samuel Loraine. Predeceased by his wife Isobel. He is survived by his children, June Kl eider, Ken Loraine, Wendy Ross, Caroline Smith and Janice Kennedy; grandchildren Tanya Kleider, Kelly Kleider, Jamie Garrah, Rebecca Margeson, Roxanne Steuer, Steven, Lisa and Kyle Smith and Michael Kennedy; great grandchildren, Isobella Kleider, Ale xander Gehl, Roy and Merryn Kleider; a sister Marie Lemieux and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life will be held in Kingston, November 8th, 2003 at the Agnes Etherington Art Gallery at 3 p.m. Former students, colleagues and friends are welcome. MILLER, Doris Warner (nee Anderson) Peacefully, at her home on Wednesday, October 29, 2003 in her 90th year. Beloved wife of Lorne Miller and mother of Mary Elizabeth Miller. Predeceased by her parents Harold and Florence (nee Warner) Anderson and he r son Bruce Warner Miller. Doris lived in Napanee until 1954 and then in Toronto from 1954 to 2003. Predeceased by his parents Pearl and Cecil, brothe rs Clarence and Norman, and by his sister Shirley and Eleanor, all of Kingston. He is survived by Barbara and Nick of Kelowna and Reg and Mary of Kingston. Distinguished Military Service having served in World War II and as a peacekeeper in Vietnam. Recipient of the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal and the Meritorious Service Award among many others. Dedicated public servant as Director of Personnel at Customs and Excise. FORKES, Leonard Peacefully, at Extendicare, on Thursday, October 30, 2003, with family by his side. Beloved husband of 61 years of Gweneth Mary Veale, dear father of Douglas and Gary, lovingly remembered by his granddaughters Jennifer and Kimberly. P redeceased by his sister May, Len is survived by his three brothers, Bert, Frank (Doris) and Dave. Len was dearly loved by his sister-in-law Dorothy, daughter-in-law Judy and several nieces and nephews. FRENCH, Margaret E. Margaret French passed away at her daughter's home in Vernon BC on October 30, 2003 at the age of 92. She was predeceased by her husband Wilf in 1974 and her brother Bill Haines in 1978. She is survived by her daughter Lorna (Herb ) Thorburn and her son Gordon (Colleen). She was dearly loved by her six grandchildren: Diane (Rob) Entwisle, Christine (Andrew) Hicks, Linda (Mark) Hachmer, Jamie Thorburn, Lea French (Corry Gelling) and Angie French (Trevor Vandenburg). Margaret al so had nine great grandchildren whose birthdays she never forgot. Margaret lived in Vernon until 1974 when she moved to Kingston, made many friends and enjoyed life during a 27 year stay. She returned to Vernon to live at Coldstream Meadows Retirement Home. Reginald Sawyer and survived by their children Joan Mouldey (Gord) and Don Sawyer (Nancy) both of Otta wa. Predeceased by her second husband, Dr. G. Harold Ettinger and survived by his daughter Barbara Hinton (John) of Edmonton. Also survived by the Mouldey grandchildren Peter, Heather O'Doherty (Ross), Sarah Ewing (Doug) and Ian (Meagan Thomas); the Sawyer grandchildren Lisa and Katie; and the Hinton grandchildren Janet Mann (David), Doug (Carol Clements), Marjorie Lepine (John) and Joyce (Jack Schuller). Great grandchildren include four from the Mouldey family and four from the Hinton family. P eggy was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, daughter of Dr. Hector MacKay and Christina Miller. Peggy received her BA and MA at Dalhousie and her PhD at McGill where she was the first woman to receive a Doctorate in Physiology in 1930. After several years postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School she joined the teaching staff at Queen's University in 1939 where she taught physiology for some 30 years. A lover of nature and a friend of wildlife she imbued all her descendents with a deep appreciation for the earth and its creatures. She lived by t he philosophy of always seeking the best in people and striving to make the world a better place. The family deeply appreciates the loving care provided by the `angels' on Montreal 5 and other staff at Providence Manor during the final years of her l ife. The family will receive friends at Robert J. Winston "Calvin" Leith Born in Lansdowne, Ontario June 18, 1924, Calvin Leith of R.R. #2 Mallorytown passed away suddenly on October 29, 2003 at Kingston General Hospital. He is survived by his wife Barbara (Genge) Leith, daughter Katherine Lake, hus band Robert of Richmond Hill, son Cameron Leith, wife Julianne of Conestogo, grandchildren Timothy and Carolyn Lake and Taylor Leith. Predeceased by his parents Reginald and Edna (McKay) Leith, sisters Frances Cockerline and Carol Davidson. Calvin, a n active and lifelong member of Lansdowne United Church, served as steward, elder, and official board chairman. A member of the Union Cemetery Board, he served as president. He grew up on a dairy farm on Eden Grove Road, which he owned and operated u ntil his retirement in 1976. His interest in carpentry work led him to building and finishing houses in the area. He was also a fine cabinet maker and an avid gardener. He will be remembered for his keen sense of humour and "his ability to fix just a bout anything". LLOYD, Donald Edward Of Gananoque Ontario, passed away unexpectedly at K.G.H., Tuesday, October 14, 2003 in his 76th year. Don was the husband of Betty and the late Regis Calnan. He was born on January 12, 1928, son of the late Donald and Louise (Ric hardson) of Gananoque, the eldest of four children. Don is well known for being one of the long time Proprietors, of Latimer's Cleaners until retiring in the summer of 1996. As well as being a member of St. John's Evangelist Church, Gananoque, and br other in the Knight's of Columus, Don was an avid golfer following his retirement. Don married his first wife, Regis in 1960. They have four children, Lisa, Paul, John, Theresa as well as ten grandchildren. They were married for 35 happy years until Regis's death in 1995. In 1997 Don rekindled a friendship with Betty Higgins and the two were married that November. Don and Betty shared six happy years together here in Canada and in Florida during the winter. Brother to Nancy (Don) Steinburg, Gana noque, Sally (John) Cossaboom of Kingston and the late William Lloyd of Gananoque. BURNS, Stuart George Was tragically killed while on business in Seoul, Korea on November 20, 2003. Stuart was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on January 21, 1962. He is survived by his wife Lynda who was the love of his life; Proud and loving father to hi s children: Sean, Colin and Jocelyn; his parents Connie and George Burns of Kingston, Ontario; sister Deanna (Ken) Gold and their children: Jillian, Andra and Stephen of Atlanta, Georgia; sister Allyson (Paul) Gardner and their children: Hannah, Jaco b and Lucas of Toronto; father and mother-in-law Harvey and Barbara Hunt of Kingston, Ontario. Stuart graduated from Queen's University in 1984 with an Honours degree in mining engineering. After working for a few years, he returned to school to comp lete his MBA at Western. Stuart and his family moved to the coast in 1989 where he worked for several years as a management consultant in Vancouver. Four years ago, he and his family moved to Kelowna where he managed operations at Whitewater Composit es. Stuart loved living in Kelowna and spending time with his family mountain biking, jogging, skiing and camping. Most of all he loved sitting around the table with friends and family sharing a great meal, lively conversation, and a good glass of re d wine. Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
