Reforming Their World: Women's Work in WWI

[pic]

Women were required to make a significant contribution during the First World War. As more men left for combat, women stepped in to take over 'men's work'. The government used propaganda films to encourage women to get involved. During WWI (1914-1918), large numbers of

women were recruited into jobs vacated by men who had gone to fight in the war. New jobs were also created as part of the war effort, for example in munitions factories.  The high demand for weapons resulted in the munitions factories becoming the largest single employer

of women during 1918. This led to women working in areas of work that were formerly  reserved for men,  for example as railway guards and ticket collectors, buses and tram conductors, postal workers, police, firefighters and as bank ‘tellers’ and clerks. Some women also

worked heavy or precision machinery in engineering, led cart horses on farms, and worked in the civil service and factories.

|4. |Based on the passage, what long term effect did the war have on the lives of many American women? |

| |  |

|  |A. |

| |Women were not allowed to fight on the battlefield |

| |  |

| | |

|  |B. |

| |Jobs that were formerly reserved for men were filled by women |

| |  |

| | |

|  |C. |

| |Women Campaigned to go to work |

| |  |

| | |

|  |D. |

| |There were not enough jobs for the women to work |

Oliver Twist

The hungry

and destitute

situation of

the infant

orphan was

duly reported

by the

workhouse

authorities

to the parish

authorities.

The parish

authorities

inquired with

dignity of

the workhouse

authorities,

whether there

was no female

then

domiciled in

"the house"

who was in a

situation to

impart to

Oliver Twist,

the

consolation

and

nourishment

of which he

stood in

need. The

workhouse

authorities

replied with

humility,

that there

was not. Upon

this the

parish

authorities

magnanimously

and humanely

resolved,

that Oliver

should be

"farmed," or,

in other

words, that

he should be

dispatched to

a

branch-workho

use some

three miles

off, where

twenty or

thirty other

juvenile

offenders

against the

poor-laws,

rolled about

the floor all

day, without

the

inconvenience

of too much

food or too

much

clothing,

under the

parental

superintenden

ce of an

elderly

female, who

received the

culprits at

and for the

consideration

of

sevenpence-ha

lfpenny per

small head

per week.

Sevenpence-ha

lfpenny's

worth per

week is a

good round

diet for a

child; a

great deal

may be got

for

sevenpence-ha

lfpenny,

quite enough

to overload

its stomach,

and make it

uncomfortable

. The elderly

female was a

woman of

wisdom and

experience;

she knew what

was good for

children; and

she had a

very accurate

perception of

what was good

for herself.

So, she

appropriated

the greater

part of the

weekly

stipend to

her own use,

and consigned

the rising

parochial

generation to

even a

shorter

allowance

than was

originally

provided for

them. Thereby

finding in

From World

War to the

Space Race

World War II

brought about

many changes

in daily life

for all those

involved. The

Second World

War

effectively

ended the era

of European

colonialism.

European

nations had

been

seriously

weakened by

the war, and

their people

were

war-weary.

Leftist

revolts in

their

colonies in

Africa and

Asia

generally

ended with

the colonial

powers

withdrawing,

sometimes

peacefully,

sometimes

after periods

of guerrilla

warfare. Nazi

Germany had

developed a

rocket

program,

launching

explosive

missiles

against

civilian

targets in

Britain. At

war’s end,

the US and

USSR raced

against each

other to

round up as

many of the

German

scientists as

they could to

develop their

own programs.

This resulted

not only in

intercontinen

missiles

capable of

carrying

nuclear

warheads, it

led to a

"Space Race"
