“Elements of Literature” FLIP BOOK PROJECT

OBJECTIVE: To apply students’ knowledge of the literary elements by being able to correctly analyze the text of a story and determine what elements are being used by the author. Students will create a flip book that will match each element’s definition with the text evidence from the selection “Priscilla and the Wimps” by Richard Peck.

SETUP INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Create the flip book by overlapping 3 pieces of copy paper and folding them in half to create a 6-page flip book.

2) The top page will be the cover page to include the following information: Title: “The Elements of Literature” featuring Richard Peck’s “Priscilla and the Wimps,” Student’s Name, and Period #.

3) The following pages will be divided in half and will focus on the following elements:

a. Page 2 LEFT (POINT OF VIEW) / Page 2 RIGHT (SETTING)

b. Page 3 LEFT (AUTHOR’S PURPOSE) / Page 3 RIGHT (THEME)

c. Page 4 LEFT (MOOD) / Page 4 RIGHT (IRONY)

d. Page 5 LEFT (FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE) / Page 5 RIGHT (CHARACTERIZATION)

e. Page 6 LEFT (CONFLICT) / Page 6 RIGHT (PLOT)

4) *** Each page will consist of 2 main parts. (Part 1) Write the definition of each element from your notes, and (Part 2) provide text evidence example(s) from “Priscilla and the Wimps” that demonstrate(s) the element. ***

5) Be sure each entry is NEATLY WRITTEN and COLORFULLY DESIGNED.

ELEMENTS SECTIONS INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Point of View: Identify 1st or 3rd Person, provide text evidence, highlight key words.

2) Setting: Write 1 text evidence sentence that proves time AND 1 text evidence sentence that proves place.

3) Author’s Purpose: In your own words, State the Author’s Purpose (Persuade, Inform, or Entertain) with 1 sentence of text evidence to support your choice.

4) Theme: Complete these sentences: (1)The theme of Priscilla and the Wimps is _________. (2)This is shown in the story when…____________________.

5) Mood: Identify one positive and one negative mood within the story. Support both choices with at least one sentence of text evidence each.

6) Irony: Identify one example of Verbal and one example of Situational irony. Support with text evidence, AND in your own words, explain why the words or situation is ironic.

7) Figurative Language: 1 simile/1 metaphor/ 1 of another type with text and literal meaning.

8) Characterization: Identify the main protagonist and main antagonist and support with text evidence.

9) Conflict: Give one example each of Internal (Man vs. himself), External (Man vs. Man), and External (Man vs. Nature), and use 1 sentence of text evidence for each of the three types of conflict.

10) Plot: Write a bulleted list of key events within the story. Exposition (1-2 sentences.), Rising Action (3-4 sent.), Climax (1 sent.), FA/RES (1 sent.) – USE YOUR OWN WORDS!!!
