HERE ARE FIVE WAYS TO BE A SMARTER PHARMACY CONSUMER
Ask your doctor if a generic or a lower-cost equivalent to the medication your currently taking or have just been prescribed will work for you. This will save you money on your medications. On average, the cost of a generic drug is 80% to 85% lower than the brand-name product (Actual member savings varies).
Don't be duped by drug coupons... Hundreds of high-priced brand drugs offer coupons, but beware; a temporary discount can put you on a path to higher copayments
Always use the most cost-effective pharmacy channel for your condition. If you need a medication immediately for an acute condition, go to the retail pharmacy. If you're taking medication for a chronic condition, it's most cost-effective to use the Home Delivery Pharmacy and get your 90-day supply mailed to you.
Always take your medications as prescribed to avoid future complications - and potentially increased expense.
Summer schedules, vacations and holidays impact daily routines, which could affect medication adherence or your ability to take your medication as prescribed. Use your smart phone or daily planner to set reminders to take your medication and stay on track. The Express Scripts mobile app is a great tool to download and use for setting your reminders.
