Circulating Books, Electronic Books, and U.S. Government Documents

To find circulating books, as well as electronic books and U.S. government online documents, on wide-ranging topics using your key words or ideas:

✓ Go to the Kean University Library’s home page located at .

✓ Click Books, E-books, Videos, & More to access the Kean Catalog.

✓ Type your key words in the search box underneath Find This:

✓ Limit your search results to particular types of records (such as, Main Collection books, Reference Collection books, or U.S. Government Online Document) by selecting an option from the Limit Your Search menu.

✓ Click Search.

✓ Evaluate your search results.

✓ Make note of the Library Location designation for any titles of interest. A designation of Main Collection means that the book is a circulating title, while Reference Collection means that the book does not circulate. A designation of U.S. Government Online Document or Electronic Resource means that the item is available online; you may access the material online by clicking the title, then clicking the hyperlink next to the words Linked Resource.

✓ Make note of the call number and status for any Main Collection titles of interest. When a Main Collection book’s Status is Available, this means that the book is not checked out. Circulating titles are located in the Main Collection on the second and third floors of the Kean University Library.

Listed below are select print reference titles provided for quick look-up by call number in the Reference Collection (located on the first floor of the Library) or in the Reference Collection Annex (located on the second floor of the Library). The first column displays the reference call number. The second column displays the corresponding title.

Provided below is a list of select journals available in electronic format through the Library’s databases. To start using the Library’s electronic databases to search for articles on certain topics using your key words, go to the Library’s home page (). Click Articles & More to access the Databases. The databases are organized in two different lists. In one list the databases are listed alphabetically, and in the other list the databases are listed by subject or format. Brief directions are provided on the next pages to help you navigate these electronic databases.

Note: When you are off-campus, you will need to log in with your Kean Google username and password after you click on a database name.

ProQuest Research To search ProQuest Research Databases for scholarly articles from

Databases multidisciplinary journals:

✓ Click the letter P on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click ProQuest Research Databases.

✓ Type your key terms in the search box.

✓ Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the “or” operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not necessarily all of the grouped terms). Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For instance, type: genetic* and modif* and food*

✓ Limit your results to articles reviewed or judged by scholars in the field (in other words, scholarly or peer reviewed articles) by selecting Scholarly journals.

✓ Click the search button.

✓ Result: The first 20 retrieved article titles will be displayed. If the full-text article is available online for a specific item, you will see a Full text link, a Full text - PDF link, or both immediately below the item. Click one of these links to view the full-text article.

✓ E-mail the article you are viewing by clicking Email located at the top left-hand side of your screen.

✓ If full-text link options are not present, click [pic] (when present) to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases.

EBSCOhost Research To search the EBSCOhost Research Databases for scholarly articles using your key

Databases terms:

✓ Click the letter E on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click EBSCOhost Research Databases.

✓ Click EBSCOhost Web.

✓ Select databases pertinent to your research topic, such as Academic Search Premier, Environment Complete, GreenFILE, and/or MEDLINE.

✓ Click Continue.

✓ Type your key terms in the search box.

✓ Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the “or” operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not necessarily all of the grouped terms). Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For example, type: drosophila melanogaster* and CaM kinase II

✓ Limit your results to articles reviewed or judged by scholars in the field (in other words, scholarly or peer reviewed articles) by selecting Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals under the Limit your results heading.

✓ Click Search.

✓ Result: The first 10 retrieved article titles will be displayed. If the full-text article is available online for a specific item, you will see one or more of the following links immediately below the item: HTML Full Text, PDF Full Text, or Linked Full Text. Click one of these links to view the full-text article.

✓ E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clicking E-mail (envelope icon) located on the right-hand side of your screen.

✓ If full-text link options are not present, click [pic] Full Text Finder (when present) to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases.

ScienceDirect To search ScienceDirect for scholarly articles using your key terms:

✓ Click the letter S on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click ScienceDirect (Elsevier).

✓ Click Advanced Search to access the search form.

✓ Type your key terms in the first and second search boxes.

✓ Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the “or” operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not necessarily all of the grouped terms). Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For example, type:

First Search Box: urban river*

Second Search Box: pollut* or contam* or toxic*

✓ Click Search.

✓ Result: The first 100 retrieved article titles will be displayed. If the full-text article is available online for a specific item, you will see a PDF link below the item. Click PDF to view the full-text article.

JSTOR To search JSTOR for scholarly articles:

✓ Click the letter J on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click JSTOR.

✓ Click Advanced Search to access the Advanced Search form.

✓ Type your key terms in the first and second search boxes.

✓ Use the “AND” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the “OR” operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not necessarily all of the grouped terms). Use double quotes (“”) to retrieve items that contain specific phrases. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For example, type:

First Search Box: liquidambar styraciflua

Second Search Box: compet*

✓ Click Search.

✓ Result: the first 25 retrieved citations will be displayed. Click Download PDF to view the full-text article.

✓ E-mail an article citation by clicking the article’s title on the results list, then click the email option, fill out the email form, and click Send.

Web of Science To search Web of Science for scholarly articles and cited references:

✓ Click the letter W on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click Web of Science (ISI Web of Knowledge / Thomson).

✓ In the Current Limits section, locate the heading Citation Databases, below which you should see checkmarks next to Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED)--1995-present, Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI)--1995-present, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI)--1995-present. If desired, you may remove the checkmark next to any index(es) you do not want to search.

✓ Type your key terms in the first, second, and/or third search boxes.

✓ If you are searching for key words (rather than an author’s or a publication’s name), change the boxes to the right of the second and third search boxes from Author and Publication Name to Topic.

✓ Use the “AND” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the “OR” operator to retrieve one term or the other term (not necessarily both terms). Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For example, type,

First Search Box: Mendelian trait*

Second Search Box: human*

✓ Click Search.

✓ Result: The first 10 retrieved article titles will be displayed. Click the title to see the article’s full record, which includes the article citation, abstract (summary), and links to References and Related Records. If an article record includes a Full Text link, click this link to see whether or not the full-text article is available for free.

✓ E-mail the article record you are currently viewing by clicking E-mail located above the article citation.

✓ If full-text link options are not present, click [pic] (when present) to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases.

ACM Digital Library To search ACM Digital Library for journal articles, newsletter articles, and conference proceedings published by the Association for Computing Machinery:

✓ Click the letter A on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click ACM Digital Library (Association for Computing Machinery).

✓ Type your key terms in the Search box.

✓ Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For instance, type:

wireless network* and college*

✓ Click Search.

✓ Result: The first 20 retrieved article titles will be displayed. If the full-text article is available online for a specific item, you will see Full text available, followed by a link to the Pdf document. Click the Pdf link to view the full-text article.

MathSciNet To search MathSciNet for reviews, bibliographic citations, and abstracts for mathematical science journal articles:

✓ Click the letter M on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click MathSciNet (American Mathematical Society).

✓ Type your key terms in the first, second, third, and/or fourth boxes below Search Terms.

✓ Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For example, type:

First search box: algorithm*

Second search box: mass transit*

✓ Change the drop-down menus to the left of each search box to Anywhere.

✓ Click Search.

✓ Result: The first 50 retrieved mathematical review records will be displayed. You may be able to access the full text for the original article by clicking the link labeled Article or PDF.

Science Online To search Science Online for definitions, biographies, and articles for a variety of scientific disciplines:

✓ Click the letter S on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click Science Online (Facts on File).

✓ Type search terms in the Basic Search box. For instance, type: greenhouse effect

✓ Click Search.

✓ Select one of the result categories provided on the Search Results list. For instance, click Topics, Terms & Principles or Experiments & Activities, then click a title to access the full text for any relevant results.

✓ E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clicking Email located on the right-hand side of the screen.

Oxford Reference Online To search Oxford Reference Online for facts, figures, definitions, as well as “in-depth, scholarly articles” from Oxford reference books:

✓ Click the letter O on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click Oxford Reference Online (Oxford University Press).

✓ Click a category below the Subject Reference heading in order to explore a particular subject area (such as Biological Sciences, Computing, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Medicine, or Physical Sciences & Mathematics), or type search terms in the Quick search box. For instance, type:

✓ Click Go.

✓ Select one of the result categories provided on the search results list. For instance, click Subject reference: longer entries, Subject reference: shorter entries, or Maps and illustrations, then click a title to access the full text for any relevant results.

✓ E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clicking Email this entry located on the left-hand side of the screen.
