Section Emergency Coordinator(SEC)Change

Mike Key-N5KEY has requested, due to health reasons, he be succeeded by Kevin Atnip -KD5WUP. N5KEY’S desire will be honored effective September 1, 2006. Mike has served nicely as Oklahoma Section Emergency Coordinator while laying a strong foundation for the success of Kevin and emergency communication. N5KEY has agreed to stay on with the management of ARES in Oklahoma, which will help us all. KD5WUP has worked extensively in organizing the ARES system under Mike and is well tuned to take the reins for continued positive ARES developments. Kevin, who lives in Purcell, is an extra class operator and holds the League appointments of Assistant SEC and EC. His email is kd5wup@

Join me in wishing Kevin and Mike the best with these changes while knowing great days are ahead with Amateur Radio emergency communication in Oklahoma. The effort to put an ARES system to work in local areas, be regionally organized (zones) but have statewide coordination, continues.

Broken Arrow ARC and Chisolm Trail ARC visits

Very enjoyable and productive visits to these clubs in the past few weeks. The BA club meeting on August 7 included a program by Ron-KD5GEZ on the Dale OK ISS contact. Very well attended club gathering as League affiliation is coming soon to Broken Arrow. Thanks to Dean-KL7MA and Dave-NB5N, Section Official Observer and Affiliated Club Coordinators, respectively, for their presence and interaction with the club. Mark-N7XYO, Assistant SEC for NE Oklahoma, came to the meeting and met up with many in attendance.

The Chisolm Trail ARC of Duncan is a new Oklahoma Section Special Service Club (SSC)! Congratulations to the club for their dedication and documentation of club effort to provide substantial Amateur Radio service to their community. This club was given their SSC certificate at their August 17 meeting. A note of thanks to club president Robert-WB5EKS and Wade-K5WPN for their hospitality and coordination of the SM visit. It was great to have Bob-W5KCB, Assistant SM, from Lawton at the meeting for support. Chisolm Trail ARC member Robert-KA5YOM and W5KCB were given their net manager certificates. Also, Robert-KA0VAN received his Public Information Officer certificate to reflect his recent appointment.

During this club visit, members and guests were supplied index cards and asked to write what amateur radio means to them. The replies were rich and varied, expressing devotion to roles of community support, assistance with special events and emergency communications. In their own words, here is what amateur radio means to the Chisolm Trail Amateur Radio Club:

• Support for community storm spotting, bicycle race/ride support, emergency communications. Lots of the general public normally are not aware of all that we can do. Need other methods to advertise.

• We can provide emergency radio contact in case of a severe tornado or other emergency. We provide radio contact during the parade and bicycle race.

• Amateur radio has been important for personal satisfaction, enjoyable and necessary for emergency communications.

• We are an available resource for communication both during emergencies and when their resources are low (manpower). A resource of trained weather spotters.

• A service organization to support communications for public events and emergencies.

• Amateur radio helps with public service and emergency communications, and encourages advancement of the radio art.

• The community knows it can always rely on amateur radio to assist them whenever the need arises.

• Safety during storms, unusual events, emergencies. Communication with people in all parts of this area, state, nation and the world, which aids in education and awareness.

• Amateur radio means a bundle to any community as to all the hobby has to offer. From emergency communications to public service or just plain old Dxing and rag chewing, the hobby offers a lot.

• Sorry to say, AR probably doesn’t mean as much as it used to. Residents like to listen to our weather nets and the NWS uses them to aid the public, so the public gets an indirect benefit. We usually find – and to an increasing degree – that governments don’t want our help. They don’t want unpaid volunteers doing what they do for monies.

• Communications support for other agencies during times of severe weather and follow up support from the results. Communications support for community events (parades, bicycle races, etc.)

• We are a valuable asset in times of greatest need.

• A common interest for a group to share knowledge and experiences. Help during emergencies when regular communications are not available. Keeping the authorities in bad weather up on weather conditions.

Wonderful time of networking with so many active and fun Amateur Radio operators. Had opportunity to visit with Harold Kramer-WJ1B, League Chief Operating Officer, who came from League HQ to meet with West Gulf Division folk. Great opportunity to be with and learn from other field staff so our Division work together continues to be productive.
