Christmas Star

Leader: I wonder how many of the adults know the song “Twinkle Twinkle”? Shall we teach them our new version?

Song: Precious

Leader: Guess what – you’re all going to be stars today – in our Christmas play! You’d all better go and get ready. Enter Star

Star: Hey, did I hear you singing a song about a star?

Leader: Yes we did. Hi there Star, what are you up to?

Star: I don’t remember!

Leader: What do you mean you don’t remember?

Star: Well I’m not just any old star, I’m the CHRISTMAS star. I have a really special job to do, but I just can’t remember what it is.

Leader: That’s okay, we’re about to do a play of the Christmas story. Maybe you’ll remember your job, then you’ll be able to join in.

Star: That’d be great!

Leader: The Christmas story is the story about how Jesus was born. The very first person to hear about it was his mother Mary.

Star: Oh, gotta go, see ya! Enter Angel. Star bumps into Angel

Angel: Where are you going in such a big hurry?

Star: I’ve got an important job to do, I don’t want to be late.

Angel I don’t think you’re late yet.

Star: Yes I am, I’ve got to go and tell Mary that she’s going to have a baby.

Angel That’s not your job. That’s MY job?

Star Your job? Why does it have to be an angel?

Angel Because it’s not an ordinary baby. Baby Jesus is God’s Son.

Star: Okay, I guess it must be your job. I’m going to go and look for my job Star runs off

Angel Hey wait! I could have told her….

Mary enters. Angel gestures wildly and Mary looks surprised, then happy. Goes off and comes back on with bigger belly and Joseph.

Leader Before the baby was born, Mary and her fiancé Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem. Mary was getting quite big and found it hard to walk, so she needed to ride.

Star ‘Scuse me, coming through. Runs over and tries to pick up Mary

Mary Hey, what are you doing?

Star My job! I’m going to carry you to Bethlehem.

Mary That’s not a job for a star! I’d rather ride a donkey.

Donkey enters and piggybacks Mary.

Leader Because there was a big census on – that’s where everyone gets counted – there wasn’t much room in Bethlehem. All the hotels were full and the baby had to be born in a stable. That’s what we remember when we sing Away in a Manger. We haven’t got much of a stable yet though. Who can bring us some animals?

Younger children help set up manger scene with soft toys.

Sing: Away in a Manger

Leader The next people to hear the baby had been born were some shepherds.

Shepherds enter

Star Hello! Yoo-hoo! You guys, there’s a new baby, you’ve got to go and see it!

Shepherd Did you hear something? They all shake their heads. Enter Angel

Angel You’re doing it again! Telling the shepherds is my job too.

Star Oh, I was so sure I’d figured it out. Runs off again

Angel Look, if you just wait there I’ll tell you…. She’s gone again! Oh well. I bring you good news.

Leader The shepherds were pretty scared

Shepherds Aaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

Leader But the angel told them not to be afraid.

Angel Don’t be afraid. Your Saviour has been born. Go to Bethlehem and look for a baby in a manger.

Shepherd Ok, let’s go! Shepherds go over to manger scene.

Sing: While Shepherds Watched

Leader They weren’t the only people who wanted to come and see the son of God. Some wise men from the east set out to find the baby.

Wise Men Do you know where he is? Do you know where he is?

Leader They look a bit lost. They sure could use someone to show them the way.

Nothing happens. I SAID THEY SURE COULD USE SOMEONE TO SHOW THEM THE WAY! Star, where are you?

Star (enters) Right here!

Leader Why don’t you show these wise men where to find baby Jesus.

Star I’d better not. Every job I’ve tried turns out to be the wrong job.

Leader But this IS your job.

Star No, I don’t think so.

Leader Look, there’s even a song about it (shows Star some music)

Star I’m not convinced

Leader Why?

Star I can’t read.

Leader Oh well, we’ll have to sing it for you then!

Sing: We Three Kings

Star Wow, it IS my job to show them the way. I can do that! Hey you guys, come over here.

They all walk to the back of the church and back…but eventually get to the manger.

Star I did it! I finally did my job! I’m a star!!

Leader That’s true…but we can all be Christmas stars too.

Star I don’t get it.

Leader The Christmas Star helped the wise men meet Jesus. If we tell other people the real Christmas story, we can help them meet Jesus too.

Star Wow, that’s great! Everyone can be stars! Can I help them look a bit more starry?

Leader Sure, go ahead. Our children also have stars to give out to everyone, to wish you all a merry Christmas.

Star Drapes tinsel all over people in the congregation. You’re a star…and you’re a star…and you’re a star…etc

Leader Lets all join together for our last song.

Sing: Christian Jingle Bells.
