What's Inside:

The Eye Didn't Know That! program can help you and your family get the facts about taking care of your eyes and enjoying healthy sight for life.

Healthy sight is very important for doing well in school, participating in outside activities, and hanging out with friends-- you need to be able to see well to catch a ball, ride your bike, and do all the other fun things you love.

This booklet includes games, fun facts, important eye health information, and places where you can go to learn all about eyes and how to keep your vision healthy.

Your Eyes Need a Check-Up, Too

You need check-ups for your eyes, just like you need to go to the doctor and the dentist. There are doctors that are trained especially to take care of your eyes. Imagine how hard school would be if you couldn't see the words in your books, on your computer screen, or on the chalkboard.

If you feel that you are squinting or straining to see things, let your parents, coach, or teacher know. Be sure that your family includes an eye exam along with the other health and wellness check-ups you get each year.

Fun Fact

An ostrich eye is only two inches across, but it weighs more than its brain.

Challenge Your Brain with Optical Illusions

We can't always trust what we see. We are used to how things are supposed to look. If pieces are missing, sometimes our brain fills them in. Our brain puts information together in a way that makes sense and allows us to see optical illusions in different ways.

Optical illusions have been studied for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks even used the principles of optical illusion in their architecture.

Is it a candlestick or two profiles?

This image can be seen one of two ways, as a candlestick or a pair of identical profiles. It is very difficult for our minds to view the image both ways at the same time. Most people will either see the candlestick or the profiles, but not both.

Which center is larger?

The center circles in both graphics are the identical size. The one on the left side looks larger because of the smaller circles around it.

Do you see a triangle?

The triangle is an optical illusion that you see because of the angles of the three dark shapes.

Look at your eyes in a mirror and then look at a classmate's eyes. Human eyes may seem simple from the outside, but they are actually made up of more than 2,000,000 parts! It is important that all those parts work well together along with your brain so you are seeing your best.

Correctly label the major parts of the eye, using the words below:

A. Cornea ? the clear, bulging surface in front of the eye

that lets light into the eye, permitting sight

B. Pupil ? the round, dark center of the eye, which

opens and closes to regulate the amount of light the retina receives

C. Iris ? the colored part of your eye surrounding

the pupil

D. Lens ? the nearly spherical body in the eye, located

behind the cornea, that focuses light rays onto the retina

E. Retina ? the sensory membrane that lines the eye and

receives images formed by the lens to convert them into signals that go to the brain by way of the optic nerve

F. Optic nerve ? the nerve that carries electrical

impulses from the retina to the brain
