Academic Activities--STEM Classes

Students have enjoyed the Scientific Thinking Project where they had to hypothesize whether Plane A or Plane B would fly the farthest. Hopefully, this skill transfers over to their next grade.

The students had the opportunity to learn about the coordinate plane, ordered pairs, and graphing points on a coordinate plane grid. This skill was enjoyable for the students because they were able to demonstrate their understanding of this skill by graphing coordinates and connecting the points to create an image of SpongeBob, a wolf and a shark.

Students were introduced to the process of science inquiry. We began with an observation of the Mentos and Dr. Pepper challenge. This demonstration allowed students to actively utilize scientific inquiry. They were asked to generate questions about the observed phenomena, and they were asked to describe how they would design an investigation to assist in gathering data to answer their question. Towards the end of the week in our "Cars and Ramps" investigation, students focused on creating specific procedures that would allow an investigator to evaluate which toy car traveled the best. Some students seemed unfamiliar with how to accurately measure and record their data revealed within the investigation. Teaching the students the correct way to use the metric portion of the ruler to measure the distances their vehicles travel was one of the most significant learning opportunities.

The children really enjoyed playing with different math games dealing with place value and math skills. The children also enjoyed playing with different skip-counting puzzles and number sequences games.

Fun Filled Field Trips--Every Thursday was Field Trip Day, here are a few examples:

The students travelled to Tallahassee, Florida for the camps annual "Be Out Day". The first activity for this event allowed our students to take their athletic abilities to another level, as they prepared themselves to skate around the roller rink at Skate Inn. Whether they were experienced skaters or beginning to skate for the first time, they were able to have fun being active and staying fit. Following the skating rink, the students ventured to the next activity on the agenda, which was watching a movie at the theater. While at the movie theater, the students watched the movie entitled, "Home". This was a very positive film produced by DreamWorks that may have helped the students to embrace the value of friendship, even in the midst of very diverse circumstances.

The students were given the opportunity to enjoy Shipwreck Island or Frank Brown Park, both in Panama City, FL, depending on their age level. Shipwreck Island Water Park opened in the summer of 1983 and is still providing worthwhile services to the community. The middle school students took pleasure in its' many attractions, such as the Ocean Motion Wave Pool, the Lazy River, and the Raging Rapids. The elementary students had the same kind of experience at the 200-acre outdoor recreation facility known as Frank Brown Park where they were able to experience the Aquatic Center.

The students travelled to Dothan, Alabama which is known as the Peanut Capital of the World. The city was given its' nickname because over half of the peanuts that are grown in the United States come from this region. While in Dothan, Alabama the students visited Water World Water Park which was built in 1980 on 12 acres of land by the city of Dothan. While at Water World, the students enjoyed swimming, floating, water sliding, picnicking, concessions, and the gift shop.

Wakulla Springs: Jungle boat, swimming and a spaghetti meal in the park. The children were amazed at the alligators and the manatees.

Music Class This year's camp started off with a blast and we revamped the classes to allow hands on activities with our musicians. Students are focused on developing products through classes that feature creative music. This is where kids get to create their own music CDs. This year we have added audio books. Students create original stories through art. They pick a grade level for which their story is geared and develop stories for that level. In our music applied classes we have added the step on the staff' to give kids a concrete method to understating a musical score. Student's in music class have really enjoyed getting into the music from the Lion King on Broadway, which will be performed at the end of the year program. Most of the music is in Swahili so the students have being learning music in another language. They also enjoyed taking a break from singing (at least alone) to watch a sing along movie version of the Lion king. We love seeing the look on the students faces when we try singing with accents and movements to bring the lyrics that they are singing alive. Their focus and even their willingness to try everything is a good indicator that this performance is going to be a great one. Dance Class The students are excited about the upcoming end of year program and seemed to practice just a little bit harder. Dance classes and the recreational activities appeared to be most exciting.
