Code Cross Reference Charts CRC

This guide contains four charts that cross-reference the various liability codes needed by an insurance professional to properly classify and write a risk. These charts contain the following information:

Category: the verbal description of a risk, as provided by Insurance Services Office (ISO). The editor has chosen the ISO verbal description, rather than the NCCI verbal description.

SIC: the Standard Industrial Class code, as published by the United States Department of Commerce.

NAICS: the North American Industrial Classification System code, as publised by the United States Department of Commerce.

GL: ISO's General Liability code. NCCI: the National Council on Compensation Insurance code for the workers compensation portion of the risk (as used in most states). Several states use their own workers compensation classification system. They are: California (CA), Delaware/Pennsylvania (DE/PA), Michigan (MI), New Jersey (NJ), New York (NY), and Texas (TX). The chart on page CRC 2 lists, in alphabetical order, various risks as described by ISO. This chart indicates the appropriate codes for each verbal description. Many insurance professionals are utilizing "niche marketing." In order to help them zero-in on a certain niche, they have begun marketing to certain SIC (or NAICS) codes. Many have even set up their marketing efforts and computerized their offices along these lines. The chart on page CRC 82 gives the same information, but is organized in numeric order by SIC code.
