"Wake up Maggie Mae, I think I've got something to say to you. It's mid-September and we really should be back at school..." Rod Stewart has been reminding so many of us since 1971, It's Back to School time! This week our house, we all made the jump from summer to fall, including bus stops, after school activities and homework for all 3 of our girls and a new 9-month long routine begins. Today's school life doesn't seem quite the same routine as it used to be, but the first day of school is always first day of school and it triggers for me a lifetime of thoughts feelings and emotions.

I drove Natalie to her bus stop at South Hills Village as she begins her 2nd year of school adventures at Lincoln Park school for the performing arts. She is brave and courageous to go to this charter school and we see other new parents bringing their kids to the bus stop, getting out and taking pictures, holding back the tears and smiles, but also fear for their child who will be different from now on as they go thru the growing pains of adolescence. On the drive to the bus stop (15-20 minutes) we had Sirrus satellite radio on in the van, tuned to the "The hits of 1970's" and I would hear an old song, and immediately recall a memory from a class that our girls are entering now. We listened to KDKDA on AM radio when I was growing up and Jack Bogut would be spinning the hits along with funny commentary and storytelling. We heard Rod Stewart and that brought a smile to my face, but when that disco song, "Get Up and Boogie" came on, I laughed out loud and told Natalie "Listen to this!" remembering how Bogut would play that and encourage everyone to do just that - "Get up and boogie!!" We both had a laugh, helping break the tension from first day anxiety and butterflies - a refreshment we needed at 7:00am. Tenth grade for me was first year of high school, that began with a longer 30-45 minute bus ride, with kids smoking in the back of the bus, and confrontations with the bus drivers to "Put them out!" I started a study hall band "Rick Roberts and the Rockets!" playing my youth director's guitar, adding a piano, drums, bass and tuba on occasion. We got to play school and church functions, even a political rally for Rikki Wertz, the host of Romper Room on channel 4, who was running for school board. Music and church functions were the staples of my life and I would come home at night so exhausted too tired to eat, then did a little homework, sleep, then begin the next day with "Get Up and Boogie!" I needed that music then as I do now!

Caroline is in seventh grade this year. God Bless middle school teachers! I enjoyed school growing up for the most part, but I never met anyone who talks with fondness of middle school, or in old days, "Junior High." It takes a very called and committed person to want to teach middle school where all the innocence of childhood is confronted by all the change of the teen years. Laura walked Caroline out to the bus on her first day with pictures, hugs and prayers and waved goodbye to childhood. Caroline gets on the bus first, so she walked straight to the back... but if she comes home with a pack of Marlboro's in her backpack we need to sit and have a talk. "Joy to the World" by Three Dog Night, "One Bad Apple" by the Osmond's and "Take Me Home Country Roads" by John Denver I heard this week. all from 1971 that took me back to seventh grade. I had wonderful teachers and can tell you all of their names. Mrs. Ableez was my home room and English teacher, but the song "Sylvia's Mother" was popular and the mom in the song had the same name. Every time I would see her in class to begin my day, I'd sing the line "Please Mrs. Ableez" from the song and I could get a smile from the teacher. I loved history the most, and sixth or seventh grade is when you studied Egypt, Babylon and Mesopotamia with Mr. McCall. I have used that information all these years later when studying the Middle East and biblical history...Thank-you Mr. McCall! Abigail started third grade this week and the hits from 1967 were playing in my heart and on 60's radio week. "Well, I Think I'm Going Out of My Head"" by the Letterman, whose founding member Tony Butela, I got to know well in Sharon. I heard Tommy James and the Shondells with "My Baby Does the Hanky Panky" - we used to play on a record player on the neighbor's front porch. They had an older sister who had the 45 and also might have known what the "Hanky Panky" was. We also heard the Monkees this week sing "The Last Train to Clarksville", and the two remaining Monkees introduced the song and told funny stories of their days in the recording studio back then. Here is a memory I've told before - my second grade teacher was Mrs. Slater and she was wonderful. She would come to our church's roast beef dinner many years after I was out of second grade and I was always so glad to see her. My grandfather had gone into the hospital that school year, and I had just attended my first funeral for Grandpap's sister, Aunt Mame. My young mind had now associated death with hospital stays and I was sick the morning my Grandpap went into the hospital. I didn't want to go to school and couldn't really say why. Finally, after encouragement from Grandma and a Popsicle, I told her "I'm afraid Grandpap is going to die, because he is in the hospital." They hugged me, assured me he would not, and took me up to school and told Mrs. Slater what happened. She was so kind. She walked me down to the cafeteria and since I already missed lunch with rest of class, they let me bring my school tray back into the class and eat while class was going on. My mom also took me down to St Margret's that night and snuck me up the back stairs to wave at my Grandfather who stepped out of his hospital room into hall to let me know he was ok. (He lived a long time after, healthy and happy and eventually passed the week of my high school graduation It's funny what a simple song can bring to mind. Thoughts, feelings and emotions that can take you back in time this week remembering first days of school. How about you?
