Instructional Plan (ESL) - Second Grade

This is a plan to help your child learn important skills. The following are expectations for beginning 2nd grade students. There is a check next to the skills that your child is working to improve.

READING

Writing numbers to 100 Telling what is missing without 1:1 counting

when shown a portion of up to six object

WAYS WE WILL HELP YOUR CHILD

CLASSROOM/SCHOOL HELP

• English as a Second Language Instruction • Daily independent reading time

• Daily guided reading groups with the teacher • Read to daily (read aloud by teacher or volunteer

• Daily writing with classroom teacher • Additional practice time on these skills

• Small group word work with the teacher with classroom volunteer tutors

• Individual book boxes for classroom use • Reading with another student

• Daily practice with high frequency words • Provide homework activities to practice these skills

(i.e., games, magnetic letters, writing) • Skill practice using the computer

PARENT/FAMILY HELP

• Get a Multnomah County Library card for your child and go to the library on a regular basis

• Tell your children stories

• Listen to your children retell you stories

• Have your child read or look at books for 15 minutes every day

• Practice counting skills

• Come to Math Nights for ESL at Markham

• Reduce TV time and encourage your child to read or play games

• Make sure your child finishes all homework and brings it back to school .

• Have your child draw pictures and write notes to people

• Make sure your child is at school on time everyday
