A lot of the information is on the website. One document that is new in 2020 is Talking Points with University of Wisconsin Division of Extension County/Area Office. A new year brings new opportunities. One of the new documents you will find inside this Communicator is the “Guideline on the Educational Roles of Extension with WAHCE”. Please take the time to read this over to acquaint yourself and your county HCE membership with the content it covers. The Guideline is to be reviewed annually between WAHCE in the county and the Area Extension Director (AED). Two Educational Program sessions offered at the 2019 annual conference “Stress and Resilience” and “How to Think, Not What to Think”. These great offerings were organized by the Vice Presidents for Program, Family, and Community Life and taught by UW-Madison, Division of Extension Educators. The sessions are very relevant and timely for the WAHCE membership. If you have not seen these materials or used them, I encourage you to contact the HCE members from your county who attended the State WAHCE Conference and tell them you want to learn more about the 2019 State Educational Program sessions. These materials are also located on your state WAHCE website. The Wisconsin Bookworms project has provided the opportunity for many WAHCE volunteers to meet children from other cultures and diverse backgrounds. As another Wisconsin Bookworms year reaches the halfway point, HCE and all those involved with this exceptional project can be proud of their continuous support for early literacy efforts. Do not forget to go to the WAHCE Website to find all the Wisconsin Bookworms marketing materials as well as the updated WAHCE Wisconsin Bookworms guidelines and resources. In closing, your state WAHCE Executive Board continues to lead your organization with a level of passion that has not wavered. It is full of skilled, passionate leaders. WAHCE President Donna Zarovy will be leading your organization in 2020 with a sense to continue to move WAHCE forward. The new state officers and committee chairs are eager to share their expertise with the state as a new year begins. “Thank you” to all outgoing State WAHCE officers and committee chairs for their outstanding work during their term. These officers’ and committee chairs contributions have been valuable to the organization as your organization continues to move forward. Best wishes to all, as your organization moves forward in 2020.WAHCE 2020 State Board Roster Board of DirectorsPresident2019-2021Donna Zarovy262-857-7502Cell262-945-75026207 203rd Avenue, Bristol, WI 53104Email: zarovy@ VP Family and Community Life2020Veronica Sustar608-547-8415 (c)N2894 Overgaard Road, Mauston, WI 53948E-mail: va914@VP Program2020-2022Jane Grabarski608-547-2419 (c)996 Evergreen Avenue, Grand Marsh, WI 53936E-mail janegrabarski@ Secretary2020-2022Suzanne Baker-Young608-633-6457 (c)610 Williams Street, Tomah, WI 54660bakeryoungs@Treasurer2019-2022Mary Ann Bays608-339-60042150 8th Drive, Adams, WI 53910Email: baysfarm@ UW-Madison – Division of Extension EducatorShelly Tidemann 920-929-3171UWEX – Fond du Lac County – Room 227400 University Drive, Fond du Lac, WI 54935Email: michelle.tidemann@wisc.eduUpdated 10/30/2019District DirectorsCentral2020-2021Betty Kastenschmidt920-394-2095P O Box 65, Kingston, WI 53939E-mail: bettykas@Northeast2020-2022Teri Madden920-868-3885Cell920-421-16197265 State Highway 42, Egg Harbor, WI 54209E-mail: teri.madden@ Northwest2020Linda Sutherland715-338-9214 (c)1594 5th Avenue, Star Prairie, WI 54026E-mail: tagalongacres@Southeast2020-2021Linda Feucht920-387-4029Cell920-344-6406433 Grove Street, Mayville, WI 53050 E-mail: lafeucht@ Southwest2020Shirley Steinhorst608-356-3531Cell608-477-08751050 4th Street, Baraboo, WI 53913Email: shirleysteinhorst@ West2020-2022Sheryl Smith608-526-4249927 Amy Drive, Holmen, WI 54636Rosh927@Conference Registrar 2020-2022Darlene Schumacher715-424-28512531 Golf Course RoadWisconsin Rapids, WI 54494Email: darleneschumacher41@ Committee ChairsCultural Arts2020-2022Phoebe Shourds715-821-1606 (c)401 State Hwy 65, River Falls, WI 54022Email: pnpaulson@ International2020-2021Eileen Gottbeheat608-374-226117007 Hoover Road, Tomah, WI 54660E-mail: gotbheatfarms@Membership2020-2022Charlene Southworth262-392-2784234 Main Street, P.O. Call me anytime!?Membership 2020Our website: is a wealth of information where all members can access to use in sharing our organization with potential members. If your county has a membership pamphlet or is creating one, it is an excellent reference. The survey at our 2019 conference pointed out that most new members were gained by sharing with friends we already have or were past members who now had more time in retirement. This is a fact that can change to include others. What is your experience? The goal of our membership year is to gain TWO new members per county. The September survey indicated that sponsored events that include the entire family worked well. One of those activities mentioned was a mending event where techniques of mending or actual mending was done. It was a simple useful topic and included sewing on a button.New clubs that share a common interest, are encouraged. Membership recognition awards will be given out at the State Conference.Ways to market WAHCE best, is to be in the moment. For instance, at your bake sale, be talkative and involved. Moving those baked items around and standing up is very successful. Once engaged in your venue, share why you are fundraising and what else we support at local and world levels.Develop a county business card with our logo and contact information including our web site to pass out. Each member should have several to share. Have some fun at your meetings, and at the events you sponsor. Play a game, share a question, make something simple. Wear your jacket, shirt, jewelry and other items with our logo. Then talk about it.Each County should have a membership chairman on the organizational sheets. There will be a workshop at State Conference in Hudson in September 2020. I look forward to meeting some of you there. Meanwhile, feel free to write, call, or email me. Wisconsin Bookworms is entering the 22nd year of reading and sharing books with early readers in counties throughout Wisconsin. Reading to young children encourages the developmental reading skills and strategies of accessing prior knowledge; making predictions; using picture clues; vocabulary acquisition; and forming connections in learning.Planning for the 2020-2021 reading school year is well underway. A ten-member team of Wisconsin Bookworms leaders read, analyzed, and recommended a selection of books for consideration as part of our reading list. In addition to searching for books that teach the basic concepts of counting, colors, opposites, and rhyming, the team reviewed book selections that reflect our families of today. This means an awareness of single parent and blended families; diversity in text and pictures; non-fiction text teaching new information; characters making smart choices; and Wisconsin authored books. Picture clues are important in storytelling so books with colorful drawings, illustrations, paintings, and photographs are essential. Once again, counties choose whether to read seven books or eight books as part of their program. Book plates/labels are provided to counties at no cost.Wisconsin Bookworms coordinators are invited to attend an informational Wisline in the spring. The agenda for the Wisline, the date, time, and phone number to call to be part of the discussion will be determined in late January. There will be a Wisconsin Bookworms workshop at the 2020 WAHCE state conference in September. The engaging workshop presentation is to introduce to attendees, the selection of eight early reading books: demonstrate through modeling the introduction and reading of the books; show supportive activities to use in the classroom setting; and to have fun experimenting with props to share with young children to get them excited about reading.District and County coordinators are kept informed about the happenings in Wisconsin Bookworms through my letters, emails, presentations, Update articles, website and Wisline updates. I am available to help counties with their early reading programs whether that involves beginning a new program or sustaining a current one. I am willing to be a speaker/presenter/visitor at county and district meetings and gatherings. Please just ask me!
