Epson Scanner(draft)

Epson Scanner(draft).doc Ursula Hoffmann, May 2, 2008

The Epson Expression 10000XL Color Flatbed Scanner, in the middle of row three near the window in the Faculty Lab, is optimized for large graphics; the scanner surface accommodates media up to 12.2” x 17.2”. You can produce professional quality high resolution digitized images perfectly usable for printing illustrated books or glossy magazines at up to 2400 x 4800 dpi resolution.

For saving your scan, bring a CD or DVD and put it into the lower drive (D)--or bring a USB flash drive = TravelDrive and plug it into the left side of the monitor (drive F).

1. Raise the scanner lid to the right when standing in front of the PC to which it is connected.

2. Do not touch the glass.

3. Place your material to be scanned (such as a poster or map or postcard or photo or page of text) on the glass, printed side down, straight, with its edges towards the far end and the right side of the glass, aligned to the upper right corner. Fit large size material as best as possible. The scanned image of large material will need to be rotated to the left. With letter-size or small material, have the top edge at the right of the scanner glass.

4. Close the cover.

5. Double click Epson Scan on the Desktop. You see the first screen on page 2 where you need to make a few selections:

Original

Auto exposure type: click on down-arrow and select either photo (graphic) or document (text)

Destination

Image type: select one of the available options

Resolution: select the lowest for web, 300 to print, more for professional quality

Document size (approximately) or you can adjust this later by cropping the preview image

Adjustments if you wish: with the buttons

Configuration button at the bottom: see sample screen on page 3

Click the small button to the right of the Scan button: make your selections.

Click the Preview button. Crop area to be scanned if desired.

Then click the Scan button. This will take quite a while if you are scanning a large photo at a very high resolution at 100% scale, with the image having a very large image size and a very big file size.

File Save Settings: select My pictures or My documents--see sample screens on pages 2 and 3.

You can scan text as an image, of course. In jpg or pdf format.

Click on Photoshop Elements3: open your saved graphic to edit it.

To scan a document or a form for editable text:

Open ABBYY Finereader: click Scan and Read. This will call the scanner to create an image of your document and ABBYY will then attempt OCR (Optical Character Recognition). You will have to spend a bit of time to edit the text.
