|Description of Project: |The Validation proposal for NWP College-Ready Writers Program (CRWP) |

| |directly addresses Absolute Priority 5 and establishes partnerships |

| |with participating rural LEAs to offer intensive and sustained |

| |professional development for middle and high school teachers to |

| |implement writing instruction aligned with the CCSS in 40 rural |

| |districts across eight states: AL, AR, AZ, LA, MS, MO, NY, and SC. The|

| |proposal also directly addresses Competitive Preference |

| |Priority 10. |

| | |

| |CRWP is a strategically designed, intensive, and sustained |

| |professional and leadership |

| |development program to: (1) improve middle and high school teachers’ |

| |practice in the teaching of analytic, informational, and argumentative|

| |writing related to the CCSS; (2) improve middle and high school |

| |student academic writing achievement; and (3) increase the number of |

| |rural |

| |teacher-leaders in participating schools and districts. The program |

| |employs an adaptive approach to scaling to ensure that the program |

| |fits the local context and to build commitment to the reform. CRWP |

| |will design and offer 90 hours of local professional development |

| |programs to reach 80% of each participating district’s 7 - 10th grade |

| |ELA teachers. CRWP will provide teacher-led district-embedded |

| |institutes, classroom demonstrations, and ongoing study of effective |

| |practices in academic writing instruction and current research. The |

| |project will provide intensive leadership development for lead middle |

| |and |

| |high school teachers to scale the program beyond the grant period. |

| |Participating teachers will also be supported by NWP Connect, an |

| |online community of practice that provides resources and access to |

| |mentors across the country. |

| | |

| |The 40 high-need rural districts participating in the CRWP serve |

| |approximately 25,000 7– 10th |

| |grade students. CRWP will reach 80% or 20,000 7– 10th grade students. |

| |SRI International and Inverness Research will conduct an independent |

| |evaluation of CRWP. The study uses a cluster randomized trial, with |

| |districts as the unit of randomization. Data collection includes |

| |measures of teacher and student outcomes and fidelity of |

| |implementation. |
