Course Description: COMT 11000 is a lab course covering basics of computer systems, including hardware, personal productivity software, internet usage and file management

Prerequisite: None

A flash drive (thumb drive, USB drive) is highly recommended. You will need one if you plan to work both at school and at home, so you can transfer your work.

Academic Integrity

You are encouraged to work together and help one another learn the material, but all submissions must be your own unique work, unless the assignment is specified as a team project. Cheating, plagiarism, copying, and any other behavior that is contrary to University standards will not be tolerated. Students found guilty of such offenses will be given a final course grade of ‘F’. Additional penalties may be imposed and will be determined on a case-by-case basis. A student aiding another student in such behavior will be considered an accessory, and subject to the same penalties. It is your responsibility to ensure that your work does not become available to someone else. You may freely give, sell, or otherwise transfer notes or tapes of class sessions.

Religious Observances

In respect of each student’s religious beliefs, accommodations will be made for major religious observances. Students who anticipate the necessity of being absent from class due to such observation must provide notice of the date(s) to the instructor, in writing, by the second class.

Course Requirements

• Text assignments are to be read prior to class. Each student will be expected to participate in class discussions.

• Class attendance is not taken, and attendance does not directly affect your grade. However, missing class can affect your grade because assignments and tests may include material covered in class but not contained in the text, and missing an in-class lab assignment will result in a 0 for that assignment.

• Assignments are due on (or before) the day/time noted on the schedule, or as given in class. No late assignments will be accepted. Missed assignments will receive a grade of 0.

• As a general rule, no Incompletes will be given. In extreme cases (e.g., serious illness) an Incomplete must be requested in writing, giving the reason and appropriate documentation.

• Requests for re-grades of an assignment must be made no later than the class session following the return of the assignment to the student. At my option, not only will the item requested be re-graded, but the entire assignment may also be re-graded.

• You may e-mail me with problems you are having with assignments, or other questions. Please be specific about the question or problem, and make sure to include your name!!

• E-mail that does not have the course number in the subject will be deleted without opening because of possible virus infection (messages may have been automatically generated).

• Please note that I have four other courses, and receive a lot of e-mail. I will try to respond quickly, but sometimes the sheer volume of messages will cause a delay in answering your e-mail, ESPECIALLY when it gets close to the due date of assignments in one or more classes.

Evaluations

There will be three exams, a group presentation and a number of lab assignments, weighted as follows:

NOTE: this is specifically a class in Microsoft Office 2007. Work done in other packages (e.g. Microsoft Works, Open Office, previous versions of Office) will not be accepted. The 2007 Office suite is available on Kent lab computers if you do not have it at home.

Exams

Make-up exams will not be given. If you miss one exam, the weight of the missed exam will be divided among the other two exams. If you miss a second exam, it will be given a grade of zero.

Labs

There will be a number of lab assignments, most of them as in-class assignments. The assignments must be done in the class in which they are assigned. To allow for the possibility of missing a class, the lowest lab grade will be discarded.

Grade scale

A = 90-100 B+ = 88-89 B = 80-87 C+ = 78-79

C = 70-77 D+ = 68-69 D = 60-67 F = 0-59

E-mail: I will use your official Kent e-mail address as a primary means of communication in case of changes or clarifications in assignments or due dates, or unexpected class cancellations.
