GENERAL NEWS:

Around FRHS:

1. Seniors: Have you stayed true to your DARE promise to not use drugs or alcohol? If so, you are invited to the annual DARE Luncheon on April 16, 2013 at the Elk’s Club on 127 south of Celina.  Students attending will leave FRHS at 10:45 a.m. and return around 2:00 p.m. Students wishing to attend should contact Mrs. Dilworth ASAP.

Job Opportunities:

2. A Mercer County Farm is looking for a FULL TIME employee. Duties include: grain farming, livestock management (turkeys, hogs), and a CDL will be required. The family would like an ambitious young person who has a love and passion to make agriculture his career. See Mrs. Kaiser or Mr. Hawk for more information.

3. Several LOCAL companies are looking for employees. See Mrs. Kaiser if interested…

6. Students participating in Co-Op Programs at college can do their Co-Ops here at home! Just contact a local business or the Mercer County Community Development Department for more information. (The same is true for internships and Journeyman’s training.)

Miscellaneous:

7. All students who plan to go to college should take a college entrance exam. An ACT (or SAT) test score is a requirement for admission to many colleges and universities. Most colleges accept either the ACT or the SAT. FRHS students usually take the ACT (1-3 times). Stop by the guidance office and pick up a yellow information sheet, informational flyer, and a practice test prior to registering! (IEP/504 students requesting extended time must see Mrs. Kaiser 2 weeks prior to the registration deadline.)

9. ACT Prep Courses:

• Edison Community College and Sylvan Learning Center offer classes to review math and English skills, test taking and time management tips, test questions and practice problems. The classes usually meet 6 weeks prior to each ACT national test date.

Summer Opportunities:

11. Ohio University Summer Start Program for high seniors beginning at OU in the fall. Session 1 begins May 13 and session 2 begins July 1. Accepted students will receive $1000 credit. For more information, visit .

12. Wright State: Residential camp in a variety of majors (Science, Theater, Creative Writing, Forensics, Engineering, etc.) Call 937-775-3135.

13. University of Dayton Summer Honors Engineering for HS freshman, sophomores, and juniors is June 17-22. Cost is $650. Register at .

College and CAREER Info:

15. Want to get a jump start on your college classes? Rhodes State, Lima, is offering an 8-week summer term with courses costing only $98 per quarter hour (start dates May 13, June 3, and June 24). Students may take these classes and transfer them to the college of their choice. Contact Traci Cox for more information: 419-995-8040 or cox.t@rhodesstate.edu.

16. Are you interested in a career in skilled trades? Many of these careers do not require a college education. Contact your local businesses and ask about their apprenticeship and training programs!

17. Articulated Credit: We currently have articulation agreements with some area colleges (WSU Lake, UNOH, for example) for FRHS courses in Accounting, Ag, Tri-Star, etc. You need to ASK your college advisor if you can articulate any of your HS credits to college! This can SAVE you TIME and MONEY.

18. West Central Ohio Workforce Development Initiative offers 10 week courses to become certified CNC machinists and welders. There is an immediate need in this area for manufacturing jobs and skilled workers. Contact angela.hamberg@ for more information.

19. Students attending WSU-Dayton campus: a locally-owned property is available to rent near WSU. Please cell Jim Moeller at 419-305-2597 if you have any questions.

20. Attention Juniors: Many allied health programs (nursing, dental hygiene, radiology, etc.), have pre-admission requirements (i.e. observation hours, specific coursework) and waiting lists. Make an appointment with a college advisor to learn more about the admission process and ask if you should apply in the spring of your junior year.

21. John Jay Center for Learning (affiliated with Ivy Tech State College and Indiana Wesleyan) in Portland, IN offers beginning-level college courses at a very reasonable cost Call 260-729-5525.

22. Interested in joining the military after graduation?

• There is information in the guidance office on all branches of the military.

• Military recruiters visit FRHS (and homes) throughout the year. For additional information about a career in the military, visit .

• NROTC (full-tuition) scholarships are available.

• Attention Juniors: Thinking about attending a Military Academy after graduation? You might want to attend a Summer Seminar to see what life as a cadet is all about. Go to the website of the academy of your choice and look under “Admissions” for more information.

23. Prospective College Athletes who plan to play Division I or II sports must register with the appropriate clearinghouse. Both eligibility centers require that test scores (i.e. ACT) be sent directly from the testing agency. See Mrs. Kaiser if you need to register with either of these athletic clearinghouses! 27. Application advice:

• If you choose to complete a paper application: Any/all applications you complete should be done in INK (or typed). Do not use pencil—appearance is important.

• Keep a copy of every application you submit.

• Don’t wait too long to complete your applications! You never know when school will be delayed or cancelled, so ask for letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc., well in advance!

• Obey deadlines!

28. Applications for the Paul Lefeld Agricultural Scholarship ($1000) should be available from the Ag and Tri Star teachers.

29. Imagine America Scholarship for 2013 graduates: FRHS can select up to three students to receive this $1000 scholarship—FRHS will award this to the first 3 eligible students who apply each year. Only recent high school graduates who are qualified applicants and who meet the following recommended guidelines should apply: Likelihood of successful completion of postsecondary education, high school grade point average of 2.5 or greater, financial need, and demonstrated voluntary community service during the senior year Students must plan to attend a “career college” (such as Lincoln Tech or Kaplan) to be eligible. 30. William D. Squires Scholarships: The William D. Squires Scholarship is primarily need-based and is only for students from Ohio. (Each applicant must have an EFC (from FAFSA/SAR) of less than $8,000.) A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required. Applications are available at: . Deadline for this scholarship is April 5.

31. Mote & Associates Scholarship (Greenville, Ohio): The scholarship is for a commendable student seeking a post high school education or enrolled in an accredited college program in the field of engineering, surveying, architecture, or a closely related field of study. Applications can be completed on-line at ; or may be requested by contacting the company at 937-548-7511. Applications must be returned to the office of Mote & Associates, Inc., 214 West Fourth Street, Greenville, Ohio by April 5.

32. Mercer County Farm Bureau Scholarship: High school seniors entering college (or college freshman entering their second year) in the fall majoring in Agriculture are eligible. Parents of the applicant must be members of the Mercer County Farm Bureau in good standing. A $500 scholarship will be given and student must maintain a 2.0 GPA for the quarter/semester. Applications are due by April 12.

33. The Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools (in conjunction with the Ohio Legislature) is awarding over 400 scholarships to 2013 graduating seniors. These awards range from $2,000-$44,000. Applicants must plan to attend one of the specific career-technical colleges listed on the application (Art Institute of Ohio, Brown Mackie ITT, Lincoln Tech, Miami-Jacobs, Kaplan, Virginia-Marti, etc.) to be eligible for these scholarships. All are associate’s degree or diploma programs…see Mrs. Kaiser for a complete list of degree programs and schools. Deadline is April 15.

34. Wright State University has extended the Academic Performance Scholarship Deadline to April 15.  The Academic Performance Scholarships are part of the First-Year Scholarship program.  Not only is the deadline extended, but this year they changed the criteria.  If a student has a least a 22 on their ACT and a 3.0 cumulative GPA, they may be eligible.  Learn more at: .

35. C.R. Meyers Memorial Scholarship ($1000): Applicants must be (or will be) enrolled in a major relating to environmental sciences or environmental education at an accredited Ohio college, university, or technical school. Applications can be found at (left hand side—near the bottom) and are due April 15.

36. Nursing Scholarship: The JTD Hospital Foundation will be offering $1,000 renewable scholarships to local residents studying nursing (full time) for the 2013-2014 academic year. To be eligible for the scholarship, the individual must be a high school senior, current college student, or adult returning to school who is a resident of Auglaize of Mercer counties or graduate of a high school in those counties. Joint Township Hospital and Grand Lake Health System employees are not eligible. Final applicants will be chosen and must be available for interview on June 1. 37. Gordon Orthodontics, Greenville is offering a $1000 scholarship to HS seniors who are or were previous patients. Application deadline is April 30.

38. Rhodes State Scholarship Opportunities:

• “Rhodes to Success” Achievement Scholarship application is available in the guidance office Requirements include a 3.5 GPA and/or 24 ACT composite. Priority deadline is December 14, but applications will be accepted until May 1.

• “Associate of Arts and Sciences Scholarship” is available for students who plan to attend Rhodes and then transfer to another college or university for their bachelor’s degree. Requirements include a 2.8 GPA and/or 21 ACT composite. Priority deadline is December 14, but applications will be accepted until May 1.

• “Tech Prep” (Tri-Star, PLTW, Ag) graduates are also eligible for a $1000 Tech Prep Scholarship. These awards are renewable for all tech prep students who complete their first year at Rhodes with a 3.0 cum GPA or higher. Deadline is May 1.

• STEM Scholarship for seniors planning to pursue a degree in Information Technology or Engineering Technology: deadline is July 13, 2013 (for fall semester) and December 6, 2013 (for spring semester).

39. B. Davis Scholarship ($1000): This website was developed solely for the purpose of helping students locate and apply for scholarships: . Deadline is May 27.

40. Dayton’s CW Televisions and WSU Scholarship: Win a 4-year scholarship to Wright State University by writing an essay with a maximum of 500 words entitled “Who or what experience influenced me to choose my major/field of study?””. Deadline is May 27.

41. US Bank Scholarships: U.S. Bank will again award up to forty $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors planning to enroll next fall at an eligible four-year college participating in the U.S. Bank No Fee Education Loan Program. Scholarship award recipients are selected through a random drawing process. Further details, including college or university eligibility, can be found on the website. 42. Aspiring Animation Professional Scholarship Program ($1000): Open to seniors who: intend to pursue an animation related field at an accredited post-secondary school or college. Visit the website for more information: , and search “scholarships”. Deadline to apply is June 1.

43. Aspiring Pharmacy Technician Scholarship Program ($1000): Open to high school seniors. Visit . The application link can be found on the right side of the page. Deadline to apply is June 1.

44. The Mercer County Civic Foundation has a small pool of student loan funds available to undergraduate students. These low-interest $900 college loans are renewable, and the 4% interest rate does not begin to accrue until 6 months after graduation from college, and are interest-free if repaid within that time. Interested students should call Glenn Hux at 419/586-9950 for an application. Applications are due by June 1.

45. Abbott & Fenner Business Consultants Scholarship: To apply for this $1,000 scholarship you will need to write an essay on the topic found on the website. The A&F Scholarships are available to all high school juniors and seniors as well as all students currently registered in any accredited post secondary institution who are between the ages of 16 and 30. 46. BigSun Scholarship: The BigSun Organization is offering a $500 scholarship to a student athlete. The successful applicant will be a high school senior participating in a sport OR be attending a post secondary institute and currently involved in some sport at that institution. 47. Sussle Scholarship ($5000): Sussle is an encyclopedia of the things YOU care about. This is not your usual scholarship. There is no application or essay, and it's actually fun. By participating, you will be posting your knowledge for the benefit of others, and in return, the best contributor will win the scholarship. Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate or graduate students as of Fall 2013 at an accredited college or university in the United States, US citizen or legal permanent resident. See to enter. The Ohio Gamma Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity is offering six Balanced Man Scholarships totaling over $14,000 to the outstanding freshman males entering the following Ohio colleges: OSU, Miami, UC, Bowling Green and Toledo next year. 49. AES Engineers Scholarship ($500-open to all majors): Applicants must answer one of the essay questions from the website at . Their belief is that achieving a high grade point average should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped. For that reason they are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluating the essays that are submitted. Deadline is October 4, 2013.

52. 4-H Scholarships: Ohio 4-H offers a variety of scholarships to its members—most of these being for current year graduates and a few for members already attending college.
