Sinking Ship Exercise

Sinking Ship

Activator

Sydney Streimer

Scenario/Overview – 22 people are on a cruise ship that has failed and is quickly sinking. There is only one lifeboat on the ship and it can only safely hold 6 passengers. Your group has just been placed into the position of life-giver; however, you cannot save everyone. Your group must select no more than 6 people whose lives will be spared; the rest will certainly die on the sinking cruise ship.

Equipment -

Group of 22 people, (can do exercise in smaller groups)

PowerPoint that goes over activity

Bio Sheets

Paper

Pencil

Setup- Instructor will have 23 chairs in a circle for students to sit in when discussing whom they want to save. Teacher will also have bio sheets face down on seats for students to flip over to read and discus with group.

Framing- “One at a time go around and share the highlighted bio you have. Once everyone has shared his or her bio, discus as a group the 6 you are going to keep. You have 5-10 minutes to come up with the 6 people you want to save. Once time is up we will go over who you saved and why!”

Procedure-

1. Read the highlighted portion on your biographical sheet out loud to group

2. Consider which 6 individuals should be selected to be placed in the lifeboat.

3. The group must have consensus.

4. Each member should participate by discussing, defending, and modifying selections.

5. We will discuss selections as a group after 5-10 minutes

Reflection / Closure / Discussion

• What were your group’s selection methods?

• Did everyone agree with the method chosen?

• How much of an impact did the passengers’ cultural background have in your decisions? Sexuality? Ability? Marital status?

• Were these valid criteria to base your decision?

• In our daily lives do these forms of identity affect our interactions with others?

• How is your life experience impacted by not choosing someone whose culture is unfamiliar?
