Vol.23 No.4 Dec 2004 Page 1

The middle of December is here already and I am just finishing the Newsletter!! Life continues to be over full. We spent a couple of weeks in October driving to Southern California with our friend Malcolm and my brother Phil and his three kids, ages 8,6 &4. Disneyland was the high point on the trip for the kids and they had a great time. We were a group of 20 at Disneyland as several of Patrick's school friends flew in from Hawaii and New Jersey with their families as well as the ones who joined us from Berkeley and Santa Cruz. It was a great way to celebrate a bunch of 50th birthdays. On the way down spent a couple of days in Redding visiting Patrick's cousin and then some time in Berkeley with our friend Mary so the driving was broken up. Considering there was a total of about 27 hours of driving the kids took it pretty well.

While we were Berkeley I got to visit with my distant Whitlock cousin Gary Spencer, wife Mary Alice and their new baby, Kathleen in Alameda. Gary is a descendant of my grandfather's sister Charlotte Agnes who married Stanhope Frederick Hamilton Cour Barron. Gary had copy of the book John Hamilton of Donegal 1800-1884 This Recklessly Generous Landlord who was Fred Cour Barron's grandfather. The book is by Dermot James and details how John Hamilton was one of very few Irish Landlords who nearly bankrupted themselves trying to assist their tenants during the famines of the 1830's and 1840's. Included is a portion of a journal kept by his daughter Mary (Moll) Hamilton (who later married Frederick Augustus Cour Barron) during a four year tour of continental Europe. It also includes a photograph of Moll Hamilton age 13 taken in Dresden in 1840, one of first photographs developed on paper, a technique only discovered in 1839. The book is a little dry but interesting. John's uncle was Charles Wellesley who became the Duke of Wellington and there are some interesting anecdotes about his famous Pakenham relations. One of John's favourite uncles and guardian was Edward Pakenham who was killed at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. John Hamilton also recounts how he was able to obtain his Master of Arts degree at Cambridge without sitting the exam because he could prove he was a descendant of King Edward I. Now that would be a useful document to find!! Patrick was able to find a copy of this book on eBay and we picked it up on the way home. An interesting addition to our collection of Whitlock related books.

There have been other additions to our book collection as well. Bunyip and the Tiger Cats by Judith Whitlock is a children's story published in 1965. Based on the definite Australian character of the book, I would guess that Judith Whitlock is Judith Lorraine Whitlock the daughter of William Alfred Norman & Marjorie Mary (Glass) Whitlock who where married at Swan Hill, Victoria, Australia in 1933. Judith lives in England, is married to John L. Swinon and they have four children. The location, the time and the married with children all fits an article received from Joanne Kader about Judith. This family is part of the WHITLOCK05 chart, The Whitlocks of Pitton, Wiltshire #8.

Another addition is Nelson & Victory by Peter Charles Whitlock, a souvenir booklet available at Portsmouth while touring Victory. Somewhere in the future I figure it might be useful to start a list of books to let people know what is in our collection. Maybe after I finish cataloguing the photograph collection.

Other items of interest in this issue are the Goochland, Va wills and certificates from Elwood Morris R2415R2417 & CERT779-788. The continued collection of Ontario certificates from Lawrence Otis CERT789806. I was very interested to see the marriage certificate for my great-grandfather's only sister Sarah to Charles Chrichton CERT798. Lawrence Otis also took the item to heart about securing your records, that I mentioned in the September issue, by sending me a CD of all his records for safekeeping.

Cheryl Dahl's file on the family of Elizabeth Whitlock the famous "fat lady" of the Barnum and Bailey Circus (X5293) pulls together a huge amount of research on this part of the family and confirms their place on the WHITLOCK09 chart. I am hoping to explore with Louie Smith of Louisville, Ky his connection of the WHITLOCK23 chart to James and Agness (Christmas) Whitlock shown on the WHITLOCK25 line (X5296). This is a connection I have long believed is likely a true one but we have been unable to prove it. Not only does Louie show the connection but also states he thinks James' mother was Frances Jones. Both these items need following up.

I was very interested to receive an email from Chuck Rockett (X5309) regarding Polly Edwards daughter of Thomas Whitlock of Wilson Co., Tn. I have done a short article this item for this issue of the Newsletter. The item on Whitlock Craig by Carolyn Craig (X5319) is interesting if just for the fact it dates from the

1780's in North Carolina and I have never seen any reference to this person. Hopefully further North Carolina research will explain who this person was. Larry Perkins' details on the Birmingham photographer, Henry Joseph Whitlock (X5325) provided great new detail on this family and I hope to do an article on this family for a future issue of the Newsletter. This article finally explained to me the connection between the several Whitlock photographers in the Birmingham area at this time. I actually have a Whitlock Bros. photograph of some of my mother's Croydon/Trehearne family of Salwarpe Mill, Worcestershire taken in the 1890's. Arthur Whitlock Cole's additions to the WHITLOCK09 chart (X5328) tie many of these late 1700's and early 1800's Connecticut families together and fill in many blanks. Arthur also provides us with useful detail on the Whitlock family that founded the Whitlock Jewelry store in Eufaula, Alabama. This is the subject of another article in this issue. Christine Unsworth's details on the Census records of Pitton & Farley 18511901 (X5355) will be very useful. Alida Spry's research (X5356) into the Maryland family of James & Susan (Price) Whitelock (M1836) (X5356) pulls together several of these families. This family likely connects to the WHITLOCK57 chart and has been added to the end of that chart as "Also from Maryland". Interesting to note that the descendants of this part of the Maryland family used the name Whitlock not Whitelock. Our base of knowledge grows steadily and each year brings more understanding and connections. My continued thanks to all those whose shared their research in the past year. Our website continues to get complements and hopefully as we add more and more data it will be even more useful as a research tool. Subscriptions were down a bit but remain in the 130 range and funds are covering our costs, even with the fairly steep increase in postage costs. Several persons purchased complete sets of Newsletters (1981-2004) this year which resulted in the health balance. I cannot see any reason at this time to raise our rates. Renewal forms are included and copy of our Balance Sheet. I have marked on the renewal forms if you have already paid for 2005. I do appreciate get the renewal forms back with your subscriptions as the form tells me if I have already done a Main Line for you. I appreciate most of you converting to personal cheques rather than stamps but I can still accept some subscriptions in stamps if a cheque is not feasible. I have managed to get some time to work on the Birth Register and have up to 1852 entered and up to 1824 is fully catalogued with mother's names. The entering is portable and I can work on it on planes and sitting in airports but the cross-referencing with the mother's maiden names requires pulling each of the family cards so is a slow process that I can only do at home. I have also been compiling Family Source files for some of the families with multiple source references listed on their family cards. This allows me to forward to those interested a listing of every reference we have in the files to that family. I have done 15 of them so far and will include them on the Website once I figure a way to name the files so researchers will know which files are the ones they would be interested in. Maybe one day I will retire and have time to do all these things!! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and best wishes for the New Year.

WHITLOCK JEWELRY STORE, EUFAULA, ALABAMA 1860's

The following email was received from Sonny Harrison: Hello.... I am responding to your September 18 letter to Whitlock Jewelry Store. My wife and I have owned the business since 1976. It is the oldest Jewelry Store in Alabama, being established by Whitlock brothers in 1865. The last Whitlock's in the business was circa 1929 or 1930, I suspect having failed in the Great Depression. I know the business was sold to an investor, E P Clark, who planned to liquidate it, but he was convinced by W.V. Neville, who was also his brother in law to allow him to continue to operate it as a partnership, later, approx 1940, Neville bought out Clark and we purchased from Neville. While I have never completely researched the Whitlock's, and they have no survivors in Eufaula since the 40's to pass along information, the following is what I do know. There were two Whitlock Brothers from Vermont {this has been confirmed with Whitlock's in Vermont who continue in the Jewelry Business, I think Burlington} who migrated South in the early 1860's. It is believed they were sympathetic to the South, they operated a Jewelry Store in Perry, Georgia until 1863 when they joined the Confederate Army. Perry is about 110 miles or so East of Eufaula, only a few miles South of Macon, Georgia. One of the primary rail lines in the deep South at that time ran from Macon to Montgomery, Alabama thru Eufaula. Eufaula also was a riverboat landing for Cotton shipments. There was very little else in Eufaula at that time, and the town as we know it today was not even laid out or surveyed until after the War by a Yankee Carpetbagger named Seth Lore around 1870. At any rate when the War ended, the Whitlock Brothers settled in Eufaula, not returning to Perry. It is my understanding one brother was Johnny B Whitlock and was an Optomertist and the business was run as a Jewelry, Watch Repair, and Optometry. Quite successful and the Whitlocks were outstanding community leaders, helping found one of the Banks and Country Club, and active in Literary and other community affairs..........You cannot miss their names in anything in the Community from 1900 to 1930. I do not know if this is of much help to you, good luck with your research...... R A (Sonny) Harrison

------This letter follows an item in the September issue of the Whitlock Family Newsletter where I reported that I had recently discovered which John Henry Whitlock it was who founded the Jewelry business in Eufaula. Sonny Harrison's letter confirms I was on the right track.
