Students in Global Studies explore regions of the world using geographic information from print and electronic sources. They analyze important trends in the modern world such as demographic change, shifting trade patterns, and intensified cultural interactions due to globalization. Students participate in civic discussion on contemporary issues, conduct historical inquiry and study events over the last half century that have shaped the contemporary world. They analyze connections between revolutions, independence movements and social transformations, and understand reasons for the creation of modern nation states. They learn that governments are based on different political philosophies and serve various purposes. By learning economic principles of trade and the factors that affect economic growth, students understand why there are different standards of living in countries around the world.

Homework

Homework is an important way to practice skills and prepare for the next day’s class.  Although the homework is a small part of your grade, it will be reviewed, checked and monitored. The skills and knowledge gained is vital to your success on quizzes and tests.

Geopoly Project

Throughout the school year you will be working on a large research project designed to evaluate what you have learned. The project consists of the creation of a Monopoly themed game board for which you complete one side each quarter. You will receive a grade on the game board each quarter.

Literacy Development

Preparing students to become engaged and informed citizens is an integral part of this class. To accomplish this you will be expected to read and comprehend information that is crucial in thinking critically, making decisions, and defending one’s views and opinions. This will be accomplished through a variety of print media such as newspapers, magazines, and trade books.

Things you need to remember about me:

1. I expect you to be on time.

2. I expect you to come to class prepared.

3. I expect you to keep cell phones and other electronic devices unseen and inaudible.

4. I expect you to have open communication with me.

5. I expect you to show respect to me, yourself and your classmates.

6. I expect you to be an active participant in class.

7. I expect you to limit your use of the restroom.

8. I expect you to be accountable for your behavior.

9. I expect you to respect the schools property and the property of those around you.

10. I expect you to learn.

“You must read, you must persevere, you must sit up nights, you must inquire, and exert the utmost power of your mind. If one way does not lead to the desired meaning, take another; if obstacles arise, then still another; until, if your strength holds out, you will find that clear which at first looked dark.”

― Giovanni Boccaccio

Late Work

If you do not complete a homework assignment, I advise you to get it done as soon you can. If you need help or have any other reason for not being able to get it done you need to come see me before the due date. After-school activities are no excuse for having late assignments. “My printer didn’t work” is not an excuse either. Plan ahead and save it to your Google Drive or bring your assignment in on a jump drive if you cannot print it at home. Late work loses 10% per day. Homework and projects are due when class starts. The due date for projects and quizzes will be extended if you have an excused absence.
