The following method statement has been developed to provide a safe system of work and must be adhered to at all times, any significant deviation from this system must first be authorised by your manager or safety representative. Please read the entire sheet before beginning the procedure, if you have any questions please contact your manager or safety representative.

The main hazards to your safety and health are;

a) Falling from height

b) Injury from incorrect Manual handling.

c) Injury from slips trips and falls.

Preventative Measures you must take;

a) You must be “competent” to carry out the task.

b) You must NOT carry out this task alone

c) Barriers erected at entrances and around the work area if deemed necessary by the foreman or safety officer.

d) You must not lift beyond your capabilities, get help if necessary.

Personal Protective Equipment you must wear;

a) Safety Glasses

b) Gloves

c) Safety boots

d) Safety harness

e) Fall arrest cable attachment

f) Hard hat

Task Description

This method statement describes the work process for the replacement of broken glass panels at various heights.

Staff & Training

The projects will be carried out by staff from ABSOLUTE GLASS LTD. All members of staff are experienced. A site manager will be appointed to each contract that will be responsible for quality and safety. Apprentices and young workers will be supervised and are not allowed to carry out tasks for which they have not been trained.

Step by step procedure

1) Start of works. Site foreman will ensure site is safe to commence work, barriers erected to prevent unauthorised access

2) Staff and contractors will put on Personal Protective Equipment

3) Erect ladders and secure in place to access upper balconies

4) Carry required hand tools to location

5) Connect fall arrest cable to balcony hand rail

6) Remove beading, hack out existing broken glass, while operative on ground floor makes sure that general public are directed away from the area of works

7) When all broken glass and putty has been removed from the window frame, operatives on the ground floor and at window location will sweep up all broken glass and old putty and dispose of in cullet bin on vehicle.

8) Carry new pre-cut pane of glass to location

9) Fit new glass and replace beading

10) Check for quality of finish

11) Leave site clean and tidy
