SUCCESS S.T.E.M.s FROM LAWRENCE

Lawrence High School participated in the

district's first annual S.T.E.M. Fair. It was

a day devoted to Science, Technology,

Engineering, Mathematics and provided

an opportunity to motivate and engage

students in the exploration of these fields

and how it affects different aspects of our

lives. This event brought students from

varied academic achievement levels

together to showcase their

accomplishments. While students worked

on their projects, they began working

harder in class; it gave the students a

sense of achievement and a taste of

success that they wanted to continue to

have in their coursework. Students

displayed to the community their projects,

which infused S.T.E.M and various

subjects (Math, Science, English, Life

Skills, Computer Art/Graphics, Baking,

Social Science, ESL, Foreign Language,

and Forensic Science)

"It was well organized. There

were a lot of cool activities. My

little brother and sister enjoyed

it. It was interesting to see

other people's projects"

- Larissa Moscoso, 9th grade

Students' Messages

"It didn't matter what grade you were in or how much you liked math or science; everyone was able to come together and share their projects and learn." ? Natalie Azcona, 9th grade

"We enjoyed participating in the fair and can't wait for next year's fair." Ali Quintero and Ashley Mari ? 11th grade

Cradle of Aviation

Lawrence has created a partnership with the Cradle of Aviation to increase students' awareness of S.T.E.M. and the opportunities and possibilities that are open to them in these fields. A representative from the museum engaged students in an iRobots workshop. Through the partnership, Lawrence High School students will be involved in:

1) S.T.E.M. competitions a. KidWind Challenge b. Verizon Challenge

2) S.T.E.M. Expo a. Connecting the real-world and S.T.E.M.

3) Job Shadowing Opportunities with professionals in the fields of S.T.E.M.

"I actually thought the fair was fun. I learned many ways to use math in the real world. " ? Garrett Pollard, 11th grade

"Thank you to all the participating students and faculty that made contributions to the S.T.E.M. Fair. I am proud of the students' hard work and dedication. Success truly S.T.E.M.s from Lawrence." - Lisa DePaola Chairperson of Mathematics

Interactive Stations

Newsletter Title

Students created and facilitated math and science interactive stations with activities for all academic levels (elementary, middle, and high school). During this event, the students wanted to provide opportunities for families to interact with their children in mathematics and science. Visitors were able to:

Watch math music videos and skits Play student-created math games and win prizes:

o Equation Dominoes, Cube Math, Trig-opoly, Geo-monoply, Geometry Candyland, Disney Math Jeopardy, and Locus Candy

o Word searches, crosswords, and Sudokos. o 24 (mental math) o Wrap Ups (practice math skills).

Do Hands-on Activities: o Creating tetrahedron kites o Finding their birthday in "Pi" o Making their own silly putty o String Art designs using linear functions

Read Student Created Math Poems, Stories, Books, and Recipes
