Mother's and Father's Day

By: Emily and Martyna

Mother's Day was on May 12 this year! Father's Day is on June 16! Here are a few things you can do/make for your parents on their special days:

1. Give them a "day off" Make sure your parents don't do too much work on their day. Make breakfast, clean the kitchen, and do anything else that your parents would normally do. Doing household work won't bring joy to their faces, but once you have taken care of that for them, they'll be thrilled to get the hassle off their shoulder.

2. Give them cards and presents Even if it's something small, I'm sure your parents would enjoy anything you give. Make fun, decorative crafts that expresses your love for your parents.

3. Spend time with them Just do what you do on a regular day, but mostly be with them. They do so much for you so you should do something back!

Young Adult Book Pick: U glies

By: Katelyn

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is a utopian turned dystopian future in which normal, average, everyday people like us are considered ugly. In a world of extreme beauty, in which kids at the age of 16 get an operation to become "perfect", those who we consider normal, are ugly. But perfection comes with a cost. With perfection comes losing part of yourself, part of your mind.

In the beginning of the book, you are introduced to mischievous Tally Youngblood, the main protagonist. Tally is a 15-year old "ugly", excited about becoming a "new pretty" and moving into the technological paradise of New Pretty Town, where Pretties party all day and night. Still uneasy about losing her best friend, Peris, who became a new pretty and partying in new pretty town, Tally is alone and wanting to be a pretty more than ever. One day, Tally meets Shay, another ugly with a rebellious attitude. Shay wants to run away to the mysterious Smoke, a secret civilization made up of runaway pretties and uglies to avoid the operation. Tally stays behind though, since she longs to be pretty and perfect while Shay runs for the Smoke. However, Special Circumstances has other things planned. The Specials, thought to be only a legend, give Tally a choice: Turn Shay and the rest of the Smoke in and become pretty, or stay ugly forever. The choice she makes will change her life forever.

Uglies is the epic tale of self-acceptance and belonging. The characters have to learn that they are perfect just the way they are, and that they don't need an operation to fix them. Read as the characters learn of the sinister secrets of their society, and how their society put uglies and pretties against each other, labeling pretties as superior.
