Introduction

FOURTH SPELLING BEE COMPETITION Primary /Preparatory

? Based on researches, teaching spelling has a strong effect on reading fluency among readers. Spelling Bee competition contributes in

improving the learner's literacy skills as spelling actually supports reading and leads to more advanced linguistic knowledge. Thus, the

English department encourages schools to participate in its fourth "SPELLING BEE COMPETITION", in which contestants are asked

to spell a broad selection of words with a varying degree of difficulty.

1-Spelling Bee Guidelines

? The competition will be under the supervision of the English department.

? Schools who wish to participate must register with the English department as follows:

? Deadline for registration is 1-10-2019.

? The competition will be for primary and model (3 to 6) and preparatory girls (7 to 9).

? The source of the words for the spelling Bee competition will be taken from the main resource (TOP STARS) for primary and (PORTAL

? The competition consists of two phases (Internal & External). Internal Phase: (inside your school)

? The participating schools should hold the competition internally first. ? Internal phase must be completed before the end of January 2020. ? Allocate the date and set the rules for students. ? Notify teachers, students, parents and administrators beforehand. ? Choose your spellers.

? Provide your spellers with word lists.

? Ensure that all the selected students are ready before the external phase.

External Phase:

? The external phase has two rounds (semifinal and final) and will be organized by the English Department.

? Only FOUR students from Primary/ Model (ONE STUDENT FROM EACH GRADE) and THREE students from preparatory (ONE

STUDENT FROM EACH GRADE) will be allowed to participate in the Competition.

? These students will compete with other schools in two rounds (semifinal and final).

? Semifinal round will be held from 15-19 March 2020.

? Final round will be held on 14-4-2020 for grades 3 and 4/ on 15-4-2020 for grades 5 and 6 and the preparatory stage.

The external phase will take place in the following schools:

2-The Responsibilities of the Hosting Schools:

The hosting school has to do the following:

Before the competition:

? Receive the list of names of schools who have registered in the competition from the supervision office. ? Specify the timing (e.g. 8 am) for semifinal and final and announce it to participant schools and cc the English supervisor in charge.

? Send registration form to the participant schools to collect the student's names.( see attached the registration form) ? Prepare forms that are:

o Name lists used by Judges Panel. o Badges for the spellers including name, school and grade level. o Agenda including the programme of the event. o Certificates for the winners in the semifinal *+ Certificates for participants. o Certificates for the winners in the final *+ Certificates for participants ? Copy the lists of words from the main resource and the lists sent by the supervisors and put them in boxes in order to be selected by the speller and to be handed to the pronouncer. ? Provide prizes to the participants. ? Send a reminder prior to the competition to ensure punctuality (a week before) via emails and phone calls. ? Select the Judges Panel (2 to 3 members). Provide the judges panel with the word lists. ? Nominate the pronouncer preferably native speakers (if not) someone who is fluent in English. You may contact the American embassy, the British Council or any of the international schools. ? Send the names of the selected judges to the English supervisors to get the approval. For primary and model, you can have judges from preparatory teachers and coordinators, while preparatory schools can ask secondary teachers or coordinators.
