COURSE DESCRIPTION

This class will explore various forms of Hatha Yoga, the branch of yoga that works primarily with the body through postures or asanas. Introduction to meditation, breathing techniques or pranyama will be emphasized along with spinal alignment. In addition, increase muscle strength and flexibility; understanding of basic anatomy and nutritional guidelines. Each class will end with a short relaxation segment.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. To compare and contrast various forms of Hatha Yoga.

2. Identify the physical and psychological benefits of yoga.

3. Demonstrate proper technique and body alignment for standing poses, balancing poses, seated poses, spinal twists, supine poses, prone poses, and inversions.

4. Analyze the purpose of each of the asanas as they relate to overall health and fitness.

5. Demonstrate proper diaphragmatic breathing while performing yoga postures.

6. Assess gains in stress relief, strength and flexibility.
