“Albion”A Process Drama by Indra Wilson and Sally Charlton“Albion”Learning Question: ‘What are the ethical concerns with scrutinising every individual’s actions?’Concepts and images from Albion can be used as starting points for developing a sustained drama which simulates a new world order, aping that of dystopia and social credit systems such as China. Within this fiction, in which the group are rated on their actions and born privileges as well as some random unjust favouritism.Albion is also inspired by the first ever name for the Island of Britain, so feels relevant in the light of Brexit and heightened immigration laws as well as Britain’s historic desire for ‘Splendid Isolation’By the end of this workshop participants should have:Explored what it might be like to live in a constantly surveyed society and to be held accountable to every actionIdentified how their own privilege benefits their life in our current society and reflect on cultures like the United States where legal and medical systems favour those with privilege and powerQuestioned the morality of dictatorship, ideally posing some challenge or objection to the corruption of the new society’s unjust leadershipDebated what qualities are preferable or not preferable in an ideal society and how willing we are to forgive people’s actionsMaterials· TV· Mic & Mic stand · Sheets of Paper· Pens· 25 Name tags · 25 Questionnaires· Flip Chart Whiteboard· ‘privilege’ and ‘punishment’ stickersOutline PlanQuestionnaire of morals10 minsIntroduction10 minsTrip to Albion15 minsAlbion RatingPrivileges and Punishments15 mins5 minsAlbion criteria20 minsSwipe Right15 minsTrip to Albion10 minsIs Albion fair?20 minsTotal time2 hrsDetailed Plan?Lure: Questionnaire of morals ?Convention: QuestionnaireThe group will be given a questionnaire to fill out from the two workshop leaders inside the room. The chairs will be set up individually with the instruction not to confer. These questionnaires will have minor “bad” things which the group could of possible done in their life. For example, lied to their parent or stolen from a shop. They will be asked to tick from the list the things they have done and hand this back to us. The register will be incorporated during this, asking each participant airport style questions such as “Can you swear you haven’t brought anything contaminative into the space?” or “Where have you come from today?”. Name tags are handed out during the register.(10 mins)?Building Belief: Introduction ?Convention: Teacher in Role The WLs will invite the group to take a seat whilst we explain that we are government officials and we have been given the task of seeking the most elite and model citizens to join us in our new society. We will explain that the people who don’t make it will be wiped out and in order to succeed in our new society you have to gain points. We will introduce the golden rules to this new land and get the group to repeat it back to us. We will be good and moral citizensWe will accept the punishments and privileges for our actionsWe will follow the legal legislation the government sets for usWe will present the truth, the honest truth and nothing but the truth (10 mins)?Building Belief: Trip to Albion?Convention: GameThis game is based on the “Trip to the moon” game where the game leader goes around in a circle and asks the group what item they want to bring to the new society. However, the game leader has a rule in their head which stops the class from bring certain items with them to the new society. The group has to work together through elimination and guess the rule the game leader has made up. This introduces the group into the confusing unjust rules within our micro society. (15 mins)?Into Action: Albion rating?Convention: SimulationNow we have introduced the group to the ‘new society’ we are creating, we introduce the concept of ‘rating’. We play a game where people gain and lose points according to their answers to different questions, some obvious moral questions like ‘Have you ever donated to charity?’, others more random and unreasonable like ‘Are you wearing blue?’. Depending whether they position themselves on the ‘yes’ or ‘no’ side depicts whether their rating goes up or down, being tally charted on a leader board by one of the WLs. We intend for the group to get riled up about their rating and the control that the ‘government officials’. We will also draw upon random information from their questionnaires and deliver information on the mic like ‘Persons name was spotted on CCTV stealing sweets from a shop aged 6’, implying they’ve been surveyed their whole life and are being rated as a citizen. (15 mins)?Development: Privileges and Punishments?Convention: CompetitionAfter the game, we have a final leader board of the group’s points. We grant people privileges or punishments such as free healthcare or retracting someone’s right to vote due to their high/low scores. These are symbolised with stickers that go next to their name badges. (5 mins)Into Action: Albion criteriaConvention: Group task / List makingThe group will be split into 4/5 groups and ask to create a list together of things, people and characteristics that they don’t want to come with them to the new society. They will then have to find a way to perform this like a public TV broadcast and deliver the list as a group. The performances will be delivered in a ‘carousel structure’, with each group standing in position and following on from each other.(20 mins)?Development: Swipe Right?Convention: DebateWe then have a debate/discussion as we show the group different people on the screen, some famous some fictional. We use a tinder-esque set up of discussing whether we swipe left or right on whether they are allowed in ‘Albion’. They will be shown a picture and some of their assets / flaws. In terms of famous people, someone like Chris Brown will be used, with a history of violence and we will discuss if we would let him in. Other examples will be mixed fictional individuals, e.g. Clare: claims housing benefit, works as a teaching assistant, was arrested for shoplifting as a teenager. We hope this will highlight what the group preference in an ‘ideal’ society or if we have engrained prejudices too. We can explore who we should forgive and the complexities of free speech, can people really go around saying what they like? (15 minutes)Reflection: Trip to AlbionConvention: Marking the MomentAfter the conversations about whether certain celebrities are allowed in, each participant is given a ‘Top Trumps’ style card with a ‘normal’ citizen on. The card will have an image and some key facts about that person. All participants start on one side of the room, with their card on the floor, with a symbol at the other end representing ‘Albion’. The WLs will ask more questions, similar to the earlier game, but now less trivial and more rooted in real life privilege e.g. “Step forward if you live in a house with 3 bedrooms”, “Step forward if your parents are together.” or “Step forward if your family own two cars”. This will mean some people of the Top Trumps ‘characters’ make it and others are left behind, simply based on their privilege. We will then take a step back and observe who is further in front or behind. (10 mins)?Reflection: Is Albion fair??Convention: Discussion After we’ve had the more serious trip to Albion task, we will open up the discussion, out of role, about how it felt for those left behind or those who made it. We’ll attempt to steer this conversation into realms of discussing privilege/corruption, perhaps paralleling our dystopia to societies such as China who operate in a Social Credit way, or how the US arguably leaves behind disadvantage people through their medical and legal systems.(20 minutes)Workshop ends. ................
