Group 521 Savage: ICEOn February, in 2019 the rapper, song writer and record producing artist “21 Savage was arrested by (ICE) Immigration Customs Enforcement for his expired visa in the United States. The question isn’t was 21 in the United states too long. The question is, was he targeted by ICE to get a message across.“Sheyaa Bin Abraham-joseph, known worldwide as “21 Savage”, is a artist and record producer resided in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a successful artist releasing multiple platinum selling albums. On February 3rd, 2019 his life was going to take a dramatic turn. On February 3rd ,2019, he was taken into custody by Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE). The rapper was born in the United Kingdom but was raise in the United States. He had lived in Atlanta since he was in the first grade.” (ABC, 2019) ICE held 21 Savage for 9 days in Georgia holding immigration holding ceil. In the time he was in jail, he was forced to miss his Grammy performance and nomination. 21 Savage has been a successful rap artist for four on going years. He has gone on tours, in multiple occasions all over the world for years and now they want to get him for a expired visa. According to Homeland security they knew about his visa expiring. The artist knew his visa had expired in 2006, “I’ve been here for 21 years and I don’t feel like you should be put in the same place as a murder for being in a country too long.”(21 Savage, ABC) What makes Homeland security come to 21 Savage, for an over a decade expired visa? His lawyers conclude that because his music, level of fame and amount of influence he has, this arrest of 21 Savage was a used to make a statement. 21 Savage made the statement in the interview with ABC “You can’t forget about the people that don’t have the resources, fame or money to fight for their freedom through the criminal and immigration system.” (21 Savage, ABC) In the United States we are usually reference to the nation that has immigrants. There’s a lot of rules and papers that immigrants have to fill out to be considered an US American citizen. People like to come to America because of the “American dream” since we believe in justice, freedom, equal opportunities, and the process suit of happiness. Pretty much someone in your family tree has probably migrated to the US within the last 10 years, some of your friends, neighbors, and coworkers can be an immigrant. Despite diversities long history and the growing, immigrants remains to be a big topic when it comes to public disagreement. They say time moves backwards when immigrants are waiting on their green card. So many Americans want immigrants to get in line, but immigrants cannot do it by themselves they have to get sponsored or have an US citizen family member or anybody that can granted them permanent residency. There are different lines that immigrants must get into based on the country they’re from and these lines all move at different types of speed. For example, 21 Savage, Grammy nominated artists, turn his self in for a warrant in liberty County. This causes stir in the media when it comes to the immigration laws. Supposedly ice reported that 21 Savage, which is real name is She’yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, is a British native that immigrated to America with his family as a minor back in 2005. Unfortunately, his family “overstayed their work visa”. Which meant there was going to be a great chance that Abraham Joseph will be poured it back to ICE. This information made worldwide news since it was right after the Grammys and he is a famous artist that Americans like. This started an online petition by black lives matter cofounder Patrisse Khan-Cullors and other social justice organization. Together they create it over 100,000 signatures within just a few hours. The signatures were too demand ICE to stop the deportation process against famous rapper, 21 Savage. They even outlined the fact that there are millions I have a document stated black immigrants that aren’t facing the same issue that 21 Savage, famous rapper, is facing. All this remission was put out into media which caused a bigger riot which made 21 Savage a trending topic. This is a very controversial subjects in America, not just because it’s 21 Savage but it’s something a lot of people in American can relate to it or have some knowledge about it. Immigration has already been a type touchy subject because of United States President Donald Trump.“There are around 4.2 Million Black immigrants in the U.S.—619,000 are undocumented,” Khan-Cullors wrote. “Mr. Abraham-Joseph has been in the United States since he was a young child. Atlanta is his home… It is shameful that he and so many Black immigrants are separated from their families on a daily basis as part of the US’s heartless and racist immigration policies.”In the immigration laws there are so many rolls do you have to go online and follow especially want to come to getting a green card. And it’s Not easy trying to become an American citizen when you are an immigrant, especially in this generation. You have so many different sizes to immigration, you have people that think immigration is bad for America they have people who think immigration is good for America. Which is a leading reason why the 21 Savage issue has made immigration trending in the media. People like to argue, people are strong-minded, which gave the media a reason to argue about what they think should happen. Especially since big-name organizations are demanding ICE to end deportation with famous rapper, 21 Savage. There’re people who think is unfair and there’s people that think that this will help black immigrants. Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph or better known as 21 Savage was arrested by local Atlanta officials and ICE on what was said to be a routine traffic stop. A few hours later information is released stating that 21 was born in the UK and has overstayed his Visa making him an illegal citizen. This created a huge commotion in the mass media with post spanning from hatred on immigration and the government to jokes about 21 not actually being born in the United States. However, “21 Savage's detention also has heightened awareness of the plight of undocumented immigrants, particularly in the Trump era.” This has caused the biggest uproar in the immigration area. According to immigration officials 21 was brought over when he was 7 years old and left once for a month in 2005. In 2006 21’s parents failed to renew his Visa meaning he has been living here in the United States illegally since then. Immigration has been a major topic for debate lately and this has caused more problems to throw on the pile. In an interview with CNN 21 stated that his lawyers believed he was targeted by ICE due to a lyric from one of his songs that he had just dropped a music video for a few days before the arrest. 21 Savage, himself doesn’t believe this to be true but ICE did come out and say that the arrest was a planned operation but had nothing to do with the song. What are Immigrations and Customs Enforcement? “ICE focuses on enforcement in the interior of the U.S. Created by the enactment of the Homeland Security Act of 2002, which was signed into law by President George W. Bush following the events on 9/11, ICE has three main functions: immigration enforcement, investigation of illegal movement of people and goods, and the prevention of terrorism.” Since being release from detainment 21 has applied for a “U-visa” which is given to those who were injured in a crime while in the United States. The Grammy nominated rapper who was previously released on bond after spending 9 days in jail. 21 Savage future seems uncertain as he faces deportation charges and is awaiting his hearing. According to a statement ICE said the rapper is a citizen of the UK and entered the country legally in July 2005, when he was a minor, and did not made his way back to England when his visa expired. The agency also said the rapper had been convicted of felony drug related charges in 2014, which could affect negatively the outcome of his hearing. In the worst-case scenario, he might be deported back to his native England. His attorney, Dina LaPolt, told TheWrap in a statement, she was working persistently to get the rapper, whose real name is Shayaa’ Bin Abraham-Joseph, out of detention center where ICE is keeping him while she cleared up any “misunderstanding.” She would not provide any further comment. In an interview for the New York Times the rapper stated, “My situation is important’ because I represent poor black Americans and I represent poor immigrant Americans”. According to another statement to back this conclusion provided by his manager, “He will not forget this ordeal or any of the other fathers, sons, family members, and faceless people, he was locked up with or that remain unjustly incarcerated across the country. And he asks for your hearts and minds to be with them”. with plans of becoming an activist for the struggling immigrants in the United States, he won’t let his legal status stop him to push for new immigration reforms. The arrest of 21 Savage from the ICE took the social world by storm. When a rapper gets arrested it’s usually for drug possession, unpaid tickets or carrying of an unlicensed weapon. When the media announced 21 Savage was arrested due to an expired visa, Twitter and other media outlets had a field day covering it. The #Free21 hashtag was heard around the world. From regular fans to high profile celebrities, #Free21 was trending for weeks with over millions of tweets demanding the rapper be let out of incarceration. Other artist and celebrities wouldn’t just stop at the typing of the words “Free 21”. From award shows to performances, artist expressed their disgust through song and speeches. Artist, Post Malone and Metro Boomin’ sported “Free 21 Savage” shirts during prime-time appearances such as The Grammys and The Jimmy Fallon Show.Social advocate group, Black Lives Matter, launched a petition to prevent 21 Savage from being deported. The online petition was launched by Patrisse Cullers, co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Network. The petition was created shortly after 21 Savage was arrested by ICE. Along with BLM, groups such as Block Alliance for Joint Immigration, Color of Change and United We Dream reaches out in support of 21 Savage being let go by ICE.News of 21 Savages’ detainment didn’t just stop on social media. Major news outlets such as NBC, CNN and MSNBC took interest in the topic as well. Illegal immigrants get deported all the time. But for major news outlets to cover one person’s detainment says a lot. CNN wrote, “The revelation that 21 Savage is British came as a shock to the artist's fans, because he is most closely associated with Atlanta and its music scene. He has said the "21" in his name is a reference to a street gang in Decatur, and his songs often refer to his past in East Atlanta's Zone 6. In "Bank Account," for example, he raps that he is "straight up out the 6." Inconclusion, that 21 Savage cause tending in the media, due to presenting the importance of immigration laws.
