American Herbalists Guild Mentor Directory

The following herbalists, professional members of the American Herbalists Guild, have expressed their willingness to participate in the mentorship program, furthering the ability of herbal students to gain access to clinical training experiences. The AHG in no way makes any specific referral to mentors, nor does the AHG take responsibility for any aspect or outcome of student-mentor relationships.

Background: Founder/Director of Northeast School of Botanical Medicine, 7Song has been informally practicing for over 20 years since beginning "formal" studies in 1983 at the California School of Herbal Studies. He attended classes and taught botany at the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine (Michael Moore), and has taught at numerous schools and conferences throughout the United States. A "diligent lay botanist," 7Song has gathered and prepared most of his herbal medicines (over 200).

Prerequisites: Educational background must include "Herbology 101." Must have an understanding of differential diagnosis, including TCM (8 principles), Ayurveda, and specific indications (Eclectic). Must have a reasonable Materia Medica. Interest in gathering and preparation of plant medicines, and commitment to community-based herbalism are highly valued. 7Song would like to meet with prospective students for an in-depth interview in person, or by phone if necessary, to determine if there is a good fit.

Areas of Specialty: "I look to mentor students in clinical herbalism with emphasis on botanical identification, wildcrafting, clinical first aid and trauma care, men's health care, and a focus on community herbalism. Diagnosis, constitutional evaluation, formulation and treatment are the crux of clinical herbalism along with educating our clients."

Background: B.S. Oregon State University; Certified Clinical Nutritionist; Reiki Practitioner; Shamanic Healer; in clinical practice for 19 years. Mentorship program would involve a combination of client consultations, gardening, upkeep of apothecary, and case management.

Prerequisites: Completion of an herbal therapeutics course, either by correspondence or residential. Knowledge of flower essences and essentials oils as well as herbs.

Background: Chanchal has been a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists since 1987 and practices as a medical herbalist and clinical aromatherapist. She has served two consecutive terms as a council member of the AHG, with special responsibility for educational issues. She publishes widely in professional journals and lectures internationally on herbalism. Chanchal is associate editor of Medical Herbalism newsletter and serves on the board of advisors of Bastyr University and Dominion Herbal College and the board of directors of WellSprings Center for Natural Healing, a non-profit cancer and AIDS center. She is also the founder and coowner of Gaia Garden Herbal Dispensary, a full-service herbal store and clinic in Vancouver, BC.

Prerequisites: Minimum of 3 years study of clinical herbalism or the equivalent. Students must attend a Clinical Herbalism Intensive (50 hours) at WellSprings Center (CT). It is also recommended that students attend a week-long intensive in clinical examination skills at DreamTime Center for Herbal Studies (VA) if this has not already been studied.

Clinic Practitioners David N. Harder practices at 143 Northampton Street in Easton, Pennsylvania. His practice incorporates a system of formulation based on the herbal systems of Chinese and Western cultures. He also uses diet and nutrition to address his client's health concerns. He was graduated from David Winston's Herbal Therapeutics School of Botanical Medicine in 1992, studied with Michael Moore at the National College of Phototherapy and received nutritional training from Bastyr University. David and his wife Linda have owned and operated Nature's Way Market in Easton, PA since 1975. As an extension of his enthusiasm for the plant world he is a wild crafter, gardener, bee keeper, and photographer and has raised two healthy sons using herbs as medicine.

Kerry H. Adams is a clinical herbalist and educator with over 30 years of experience and the founder of Herbally Yours Inc, in 1979. She is a 1993 graduate of David Winston's Center for Herbal Studies and currently an instructor for his two-year program. Kerry also graduated as a Charter Herbalist from Dominion Herbal College, Burnaby B.C. Canada in 1979, the Meridian Institute of Shiatsu and the East/West Institute for Asian Bodywork; she is Nationally Certified by the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Commission

Pre-requisites: Minimum of 2 years of formal herbal therapeutic education

Areas of specialty: Family Practice Clinic that offers students the ability to observe experienced practitioners, their intake skills, constitutional evaluation and formulation with complete protocol planning

Limitations/Restrictions: Mentorship is restricted to Clinic hours the 1st Monday of each month from 5pm to 8pm. Additional clinical training programs in herbal pharmacy and training are ongoing and scheduled separately

Background: Margi has been in clinical practice for 20 years. She is an Adjunct Professor at the Tufts University School of Medicine, and has a busy practice out of her home in Marblehead and at AtlantiCare Hospital. Author of "A Practicing Herbalist" (1999).

Prerequisites: Serious interest as a medicinal practitioner. Must have served in an apprenticeship with 1-2 practicing herbalists or comparable study.

Background: Steven has been working with herbs for nearly 30 years. He is also the author of The ABC Herbal, Ancient Times: Modern Times, Constitutional Iridology and The Endocrine Symphony. He is co-author of A Comprehensive Guide to Commercial Herb Formulas, Pain Relief Without Medication, and the curriculum of the Tree of Light Institute. A gifted teacher, he has lectured on natural healing throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, and Malaysia. Besides herbs, his specialties include iridology, muscle response testing, energetics, and emotional healing.

Prerequisites: Students must have training in the Tree of Life Institute's Four Elements Model, iridology, tongue and pulse diagnosis, glandular body typing, and applied kineseology prior to mentorship.

Background: State Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist, Founder and Director of International Integrative Educational Institute, current national officer (Treasurer) of the AHG, AHG Council member for 4 years, founder of Washington chapter of the AHG. Mr. Khalsa has been in clinical practice since 1973 and instructor of Professional Herbalism since 1995. He is the author or editor of over 30 books, including Body Balance: Vitalize your Health with pH Power and Herbal Defense. He also is a regular contributor of articles to a variety of herbal and health periodicals, with over 1000 articles in publication.

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of Professional Herbalism or enrollment in a Professional Program.

Background: Mara is a clinical herbalist living with the Central Coast range of Oregon. Her 20 years of experience and education with North American medicinal plants is applied in her work as clinician, educator, ethical wildcrafter, medicine maker, and proprietor of Blue Heron Herbs. Mara holds a Ph.D. in Human Communications, a B.A. in Psychology and is a founding member of the AHG where she worked with the educational standards committee. She has also developed and teaches an herb course at a local community college. Mara integrates teachings of traditional Native American, folk, European/Western Eclectic, and Traditional Chinese Medicine in her work with a strong spiritual and emotional focus.

Prerequisites: High school completion, at least three years of herbal and related studies.

Areas of Specialty: Heavy emphasis on Chinese diagnostics, traditional formulas with adjustments and additions of other cultural herbs, and adjunctive therapies such as Moxibustion, auricular and dietary therapies.

Background: Kathleen's love and study of plants began over 20 years ago as a Peace Corps volunteer in Chile, S.A. She is an Honors graduate of Hahnemann Medical College's Physician Assistant program. She has been a practicing herbalist for the past 15 years, teaches botanical medicine to medical students at the University of Virginia, and is a Plant Spirit Medicine practitioner as well as a Reiki III teacher.

Prerequisites: One year of study with a qualified herbalist or school. Student must have direct experience with plants, and a good understanding of anatomy and physiology.
