Oregon Coast STEM Hub Community Report

- Spring 2016 -

Prepared by Marie Kowalski, Oregon State University

Introduction The Oregon Coast STEM Hub is one of eleven regional STEM Hubs funded by the Oregon Department of Education. It serves students, teachers, schools, and communities in Clatsop, Tillamook, Lincoln, Coos, Curry, and part of Lane counties along the Oregon coast. The Oregon Coast STEM Hub is currently in its second year of operation and serves twenty school districts. The goal of the Oregon Coast STEM Hub is to increase student achievement in STEM and teacher knowledge of STEM content and pedagogy. This is achieved through teacher professional development opportunities and materials for teachers, as well as educational STEM opportunities for students.

Purpose This report is a presentation of baseline data for the state of Oregon as well as each school district served by the Oregon Coast STEM Hub. The goals of the report are listed here: 1. Present an overview of education-related metrics in Oregon 2. Determine baseline data for school districts served by the Oregon Coast STEM Hub 3. Identify potential needs within school districts to inform community meetings and help the Oregon Coast STEM Hub provide more targeted, effective support

Methods and Structure The data in this report include graduation rates, science and math standardized test scores, school and community demographics, and economic factors such as poverty and employment rates. Data for this report was collected using the Oregon Department of Education Report Cards for 20142015 school year and the Rural Communities Explorer Communities Reporter tool (). Data was collected for the 2014-15 school year unless otherwise noted. This report is organized into two sections. The first is an Oregon Overview (page 1), which provides information on state trends and averages.
