WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT HAUNTINGS?

The Biblical Point of View

• Is there such a thing as ghosts?.....Well, that all depends on what precisely is meant by the term “ghosts”…..if the term means “spirit beings”…then YES….if the term means “spirits of people who have died”…the answer is NO

• The Bible makes it abundantly clear that there are spirit beings…both good and evil…but the Bible says that spirits of deceased human beings CANNOT remain on earth to “haunt” the living

• Hebrews 9:27 declares “Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment”……THAT is what happens to a person’s soul-spirit after death…JUDGMENT

• The result of judgment is heaven, for the believer (2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Philippians 1:23)…and hell for the unbeliever (Matthew 25:46; Luke 16:22-24)

• There is no in-between! There is NO possibility of remaining on earth in spirit form as a “ghost”….

• The Bible teaches very clearly that there are indeed spirit beings who can connect and appear in our physical world…the Bible identifies these beings as ANGELS and DEMONS….

• Angels are spirit beings who are faithful in serving God…andgels are righteous, good, and holy.

• Demons are fallen angels, angels who rebelled against God. Demons are evil, deceptive, and destructive.

• According to 2 Corinthians 11:14-15, demons masquerade as “angels of light” and as “servants of righteousness” …appearing as a “ghost” and impersonating a deceased human being definitely seem to be within the power and abilities that demons possess.

• 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.”

• The closest biblical example of a “haunting” is found in Mark 5:1-20…a legion of demons possessed a man and used the man to haunt a graveyard. There were no ghosts involved…it was a case of a normal person being controlled by demons to terrorize the people of that area.

• Demons seek ONLY to “kill, steal, and destroy” (John 10:10). …they will do anything in their power to deceive people, to lead people away from God.

• This is very likely the explanation of “ghostly” activity today…whether its called a ghost, a ghoul, or a poltergeist…if there is genuine evil spiritual activity occurring…IT IS THE WORK OF DEMONS!

• What about instances in which “ghosts” act in “positive” ways?....What about psychics who claim to summon the deceased and gain true and useful information from them?....again, it is crucial to remember that the goal of demons is to DECEIVE…

• If the result is that people trust in a psychic instead of God…a demon will be more than willing to reveal true information…even good and true information…if from a source with evil motives, can be used to mislead, corrupt, and destroy

• Familiar Spirits are spirits that give an appearance of a person that is familiar to a human being…EX: demons know the history of the property and the person…even details, names, places, and facts…so they can take on their appearance of any person so you feel comfortable in talking to them…..demons have been here since the “Fall”!!

• Interest in the paranormal is becoming increasingly common…there are individuals and businesses that claim to be “ghost-hunters” who will rid your home of ghosts…

• Psychics, séances, tarot cards, and mediums are increasingly considered normal…

• Look what the Bible says: Deuteronomy 18:9-12 “When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord, and because of these detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you.”

• Another really crazy thing is that people who are interested in ghosts and hauntings often assume that whenever these spirits speak…the claims that they make about themselves are truthful…WHY? Can evil spirits be trusted to speak truthfully?…the Bible tells us that the ruler of the dark spiritual world, Satan, is the author of life…

• John 8:44 “The Devil was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar, and the father of lies..”

• Think about this….many people say…O, the devil…he doesn’t even really exist….ISN’T THAT JUST THE ULTIMATE LIE THAT SATAN WOULD HAVE YOU TO BELIEVE!!!!!!!? …by making people believe this he is free to operate unchallenged and unhindered!

• The real truth is that the devil DOES indeed exist…the Bible declares this as do countless people through history who have encountered him and the evil spirits that serve him.

• People who listen to spiritualists, mediums, and those who claim to receive messages from the spirit world, need to seriously ask themselves exactly who or what it is that is trying to communicate with them…

• The Bible warns of the very real danger of seductive spirits that will come to deceive people and draw them away from God and into bondage…

• 1 Timothy 4:1 “But the Holy Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons…”

• Human beings are innately aware of the spiritual world…sadly…instead of seeking the truth about the spirit world by communicating with God and studying His Word,…many people allow themselves to be led astray by the sprit world…

• The demons surely laugh at the spiritual mass-deception that exists in the world today

• After all, that is the bigger plan of the demonic world…to draw people to become interested in their activity and the signs and wonders they perform…in doing this, they successfully blind people and influence them further away from a relationship with God….it is no accident that those who become interested in ghosts and the paranormal continue their quest for spirituality by going deeper and deeper into the occult

• It’s a slippery slope downwards…it is a very subtle and gradual process…before a person realizes what is happenind, they are immersed in occult practices and are influenced by the same spirits to become hostile or indifferent to Christ an Christianity…

• The Bible states that Satan has…

• 2 Corinthians 4:4 “…blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

• The good news is that people do not have to remain blinded in the darkness…the Bible tells us that we can come into a relationship with Christ who is the “Light of the World” (John 8:12…and be free from the fear and control of dark supernatural forces!

• The Bible says in Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

• We are NOT battling against the HUMAN BEINGS…but against the demonic influences they are being controlled by!

• So…..”WHY IS LAND HAUNTED?”

• Look at Numbers 35:33-34 “Do not pollute the land where you are. BLOODSHED pollutes the land…do not defile the land where you live…”

• There are many reasons why land is “haunted”…some properties have violent hauntings and some have little activity…

• Land is haunted because someone gave the evil demonic spirits an invitation…which is called legal ground

• Usually the spirits will manifest in the same way that the legal ground was given….EX: if someone committed suicide on the land…you might hear a sound like a rope swinging or a loud thump that sounds like something is hitting the floor…this would tell you that a suicide is the legal ground and the curse that is on the land because of the suicide must be broken in the Name of Jesus Christ

• Here are some other reasons why land is haunted:

• A spirit might have legal ground if someone used witchfraft on the land, someone might have buried idols or a cursed object on the property, holding séances on the property, psychics were allowed to operate on the property (Deut. 18:9-12), murder was committed….the list goes on and on…

• Basically it is sin committed on the property that allows demons to dwell on the land

• What can we do about haunted land? If you are a Christian, you have to power and authority to break the curse!...
