The last of `Legion': Marvelinspired FX series starts final season

Say goodbye to "Legion." Or start to, anyway.

The "X-Men"-related Marvel saga of mutant David Haller (played by "Downton Abbey" alum Dan Stevens) begins its third and final FX season Monday, June 24. Once thought schizophrenic, David has been locked in a battle ? for self-control, among other things ? with ancient enemy Amahl Farouk (Navid Negahban). Causing his own brand of damage while he and his allies have pursued Farouk, David now tries to set things right.

Co-stars Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Bill Irwin, Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, Hamish Linklater and Lauren Tsai also return for the last round, which opens with a script co-written by "Legion" developer and executive producer Noah Hawley ("Fargo"). "I think endings are what give stories meaning," Hawley reasons. "I always thought about this as a complete story with a beginning, middle and end. And it felt like a three-act story, so this just felt like the natural place to end it.

"I feel like on some level, what the show is following is this sort of cycle of mental illness," adds Hawley. "We met David, who had been at his lowest point and tried to kill himself ? and (then) he's in the psychiatric hospital and he meets Syd (Keller's character)

and everything gets balanced out. He's on his meds, he gets out, everything's going great for a while. He goes off the meds and spirals down, which is sort of where we find him now. And the question is, can he get back to some kind of good place or is he gone for good? Once we tell that story, it feels like we're just going back to the beginning of the cycle, potentially."

In portraying David, Stevens agrees that "great stories have endings. They don't just stop. When Noah first discussed the story with me, I knew where it was going. I didn't know how (it would end), but I was promised that it would be weird and beautiful ... and it certainly has been. I really like the way this sort of twisted rainbow is emerging. There's definitely a destination that David wants to get to."

"Legion" also has given Plaza a unique role ? originally intended for a man ? in Lenore "Lenny" Busker, David's friend who died but got renewed life in a different body. The actress claims the last episodes reveal "a whole new side of Lenny. I think this season has been, really, a kind of deep dive into the real human side of Lenny. She's gotten a second chance at real life now. I'm so lucky to play a character that has so many sides and allows me to explore so many different things."

NIK WALLENDA

With every location he chooses, high-wire artist Nik Wallenda envisions himself as but a small feature on a much larger canvas.

"I imagine every walk that I do is a postcard ...," he explains, "and we're sort of painting a picture, whether it be inspiration of just how small we are in a large world over the Grand Canyon, etc. So I really do. I envision a postcard and what's it going to look like? And I get chills thinking about what that postcard's going to look like with me and my sister over Times Square at night."

Indeed, Sunday, June 23, ABC's "High Wire Live in Times Square With Nik Wallenda" finds the 40-year-old Floridian and his sister Lijana attempting a 1,300-foot walk 25 stories up between 1 and 2 Times Square in New York City. Starting from opposite sides, the descendants of the legendary Karl Wallenda and the Flying Wallendas family of aerialists will cross in the middle before continuing on to their respective end points.

It's the first high-wire walk for Lijana since the Feb. 8, 2017, accident that seriously injured her and four others during a rehearsal. For this performance, the Wallendas have been training in the Sarasota park where the fall occurred, which Nik says made for excellent mental preparation and helped them cope with the memories and traumatic stress disorder from that day.

"It's just like getting in a horrific car accident, it's something you have to deal with," he says. "But to actually be training right here where that accident happened, there's something extremely powerful about that, I feel, and our whole goal in this walk ? and really my career goal at this point in life ? is about inspiring people. And to me, she inspires me that she's going to do this, this amazing feat, again, kind of against all odds, if you will."

Full name: Nikolas Wallenda Birth date: Jan. 24, 1979 Birthplace: Sarasota, Fla. Family ties: He and wife Erendira have three children; great-grandfather is Karl Wallenda, founder of the Flying Wallendas Landmark performances: The Atlantis Paradise Island Resort in the Bahamas (2010); hanging from a trapeze on a helicopter above Branson, Mo. (2011); the Condado Plaza Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico (2011, 33 years after his greatgrandfather fell to his death there); Niagara Falls (2012); Grand Canyon (2013); between skyscrapers in Chicago (2014) Did you know: Proposed to Erendira, the daughter of a Mexican circus family, on a high wire during a 1999 performance in Montreal

Favorite book: "Goodness gracious. I would say my favorite book is probably my great-grandfather's book, `The Great Wallendas.' "

Favorite movie: "You know, I love comedies, I love Adam Sandler ... . I'm not one that has favorites. That's just not the way I work. I love a great comedy."
